ABOUT 13 people, including a road traffic officer, on Wednesday, in Jabi district area of Abuja, escaped death when a commercial bus had a brake failure and crashed into the fence of the Jabi Plaza.
The incident, which occurred at about 2: 30 p.m., was said to have been caused by over-speeding.
An eyewitness told the Nigerian Tribune that the driver of the bus, with registration number XB 539 RBC, lost control, making the vehicle to swerve off the road.
The source said the vehicle hit a road safety officer, simply identified as Zakari, on his way to meet his colleagues at the traffic check point and had been rushed to an undisclosed hospital.
Aside some of the passengers who were said to have sustained various degrees of injuries, the bus also broke part of the perimeter fence of the plaza and damaged two other buses belonging to Collzen Travel and Tour.
A traffic officer who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident to the Nigerian Tribune, saying that his colleague who was hit by the ill-fated bus was called up to go to Total traffic junction before the incident.
While tragedy struck in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on Wednesday, when thunder struck two middle-aged men, driver and mechanic to death.
The third victim identified as Ibrahim Oke was still unconscious when the Nigerian Tribune visited the scene of the incident on Ibadan-Ife road.
An eye witness, Sarafadeen Musibau, said that they were all at the open field recently allocated to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) by the state government to serve as the new garage for the commercial vehicle operators when suddenly they heard the sound of the thunder.
He said immediately, everybody started running helter skelter, looking for where they could hide, but before they knew what was happening, three people had been hit by the thunder.
According to him, the deceased were drinking palm wine under a tree when they were hit by the thunder.
He explained that one of the victims was carried by the thunder which hanged him on the tree before catching fire.
He said the victim was burning when he later fell inside a drainage.
The third victim, the Nigerian Tribune learnt, was on an errand when he was hit by the thunder.

Thunder will strike the tallest object in that vicinity.

What people should do is not run if the field is too open but lay flat on the ground.

But the story seems fishy, the tree will naturally be taller than the men, if they were truly under the tree, this should have been striked by the thunder and not the men.

all said, there would never be proper investigation to ensure such does not happen again. That is Nigeria for you.

Is it thunder that strikes or lightening?

Be it thunder or lightening, prayers should be offered to ward off the dark forces associated with thunder and lightening.

you are joking right.

this is 2010 not 1665. Thunder and lightning are natural occurrence.

Important is to know what to do if you find yourself in thunderstorm situation.

I am not joking, thou shall not pretend. Do not rule out supernatural forces that abound in this planet earth. One can overcome those powers with prayers. Hence, am calling all the Pastors, Imams and traditionalist to comverge and offer prayers that will prevent reoccurence.
