By Chinyere Okoye, 06.15.2010
Lagos

Following an alleged fraud in the just concluded selection exercise into the Nigerian Army to deny the South East its quota, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo has petition the Presidency and National Assembly demanding the sack of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Abdularaham Dambazau.

Ohanaeze in a four-page petition addressed to the President and copied the Senate President, Speaker, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and governors of the South East, said the demand to sack Dambazau was based on alleged abuse of office, fraud and lack of integrity on how the recruitment exercise into the Army for Batches A and B was handled.
The document dated June 8, 2010 and signed by the President, Ohanaze, Lagos State, Chief Oliver Akubueze allerged that the Army Chief, who took oath of office to defend, maintain peace and unity of the country is now sowing a seed of discord to the unity of Nigeria using the recruitment of soldiers.
Akubueze said under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, there was balance in equation on the recruitment of soldiers among the 36 states of the Federation but that soon after he left office, the mode of recruitment changed as cheating of South East started.

His words:”At first, they started by recruiting the Northern soldiers through the Eastern states quota by using Igbo names on the Northern recruits as if they are Igbo candidates, thereby short changing the Igbo numerical strengthen in the Nigerian Army.
For an eample, presently a Northern soldier is answering Onyebuchi Titus and he is serving Ijebu-Ode Barrack, Ogun state and another soldier is also bearing the name Christopher Obinna and he is serving at Onitsha; you can investigate this sir”.
According to him, it was the Ebonyi state government that discovered the fraud and introduced stringent measures in recruitment of its indigenes through recommendation of traditional rulers from their communities to avoid further cheating.

The petition alleged that the 19 Northern states got 120 candidates batches (A and B) while those from the 17 Southern states were short changed with each 45 candidates on batch A and B insisting that the guideline for the recruitment exercise was circulated nationwide through the recruitment centers as well as military formation.
“The 30 candidates short changed from each of the 17 Southern states are now regarded as Minister of Defence and Chief of Army Staff which will be filled with Northern candidates. The 120 list of each Southern states were proned down to 90 at Osogbo zonal screening NYSC camp” he alleged.

Ohanaeze further disclosed that the shortfall of 30 candidates from each Southern states are being completed at Abuja in the offices of General Dambazau and the defence minister with names of people from the North who were not screened at the Osogbo zonal level which ended on June 7.
Chief Akubueze asked in the petition why candidates are being recruited through the army boss at Abuja for the Southern states thus the method was designed by General Dambazau and the minister to short change the Igbos.
The group also alleged in the document sent to President Goodluck Jonathan that some Generals and officer that ought to have been retired after reaching the age limit since 2009 are still serving while their counterpart from the Eastern part of the country were sent on retirement.

It stressed that the presence of the Northern officers who ought to be on retirement are blocking the promotion of younger officers from the East in he army thus the Nigerian being branded a failed state should not be credited to only politicians but also to the military.
“With the facts adduced, we call on you sir to intervene immediately to allow peace reign because peace is that presence of justice that derives away conflict, therefore, there will be no peace without justice” Akubueze noted.

The demographics of the Nigerian army needs urgent attention. We must ensure that there is equity in admissions.
A lopsided army allows for the military to become a tribal or sectional political tool for coercing opponents. . . Not healthy and could easily lead to war, instability, mediocre government and lack of development.

These northerners will never change.
One of these days, they will be excised from Nigeria. Do they even know what they are doing?

Keeping people from joining the army only makes them form their own army, and the days of conflict ticking closer or at least it turns them into militants. This 40 year old trick is already failing with the formation of MEND. It will only spread to the South East, that's all.

Re: Ohanaeze Demands Sack Of Army Chief by rhymz(m): 9:23am On Jun 15, 2010
I ve always suspected that the dominance by the North of the military was systematic and intentional. Go to every barrack in this country, it is porpulated by people from the North. It is common sense to conclude that but for oil the North would have left this false marriage called Nigeria, they obviously do not believe in it hence their their scheme to continue to dominate  the force, should there be need to coerce the South to stay or seceed from the Union. Another way to look at it is the politiics at play, which part of the force has always toppled the government? That is right, your guess is like mine. Dominating the military will ensure a smooth co-ordination in the event the North choose to grab power by force should their politicians fall out of favour in the scheme of things in this very unpredictable polity. Jonathan is playing a very risky game, one would have thought that after thesame set of officers nearly usurped his authority during the Yaradua KSA appearance saga that he would have made some reshuffling in the top hierarchy of the force. He probably thinks he would win their loyalty by not altering the status quo, I sorry for him cos it is obvious to every discerning Nigerian that these men owe their allegiance to the politicians in the north, the Hausa-fulanis. It is a waste of time and too much risk giving them time to shift allegiance cos it will never happen. The north may be the least educated section of the country but they are the best when it comes to tacit and unsuspecting scheming that has been systematically planned.

If you read the article, you'll see that Dambazau Dambastard short changed the whole southern states, not just a particular ethnic group.

That Ohanaeze is complaining does not imply that it is an exclusive Igbo problem.

any evidence to prove these soldiers arent in fact from the north?

i thought people were complaining about nigerians not being allowed to claim their states of birth rather than state of their parents' origin.

now you have northerners with Igbo names, does that automatically mean they're not ethnically Igbo?

Tell me one northerner that will claim Imo or Abia as his/her state even if he/she was born there. This is a clear case of shortchanging Eastern States and it has nothing to do with states of birth or state of parent's origin. That army chief dude should be fired jor!!!
Re: Ohanaeze Demands Sack Of Army Chief by tpiah: 2:55pm On Jun 15, 2010
^^your post has nothing to do with my question.

neither do you know if there are some hausas native to Igboland never mind the fact that somebody posted a news article to that effect recently.

just because there are "northerners" with Igbo names doesnt mean they [the so-called northerners] arent actually Igbo. If there's evidence they arent ethnic Igbos then let's see it.

You can answer yourself by simply reading the article. Here is the relevant except;

His words:”At first, they started by recruiting the Northern soldiers through the Eastern states quota by using Igbo names on the Northern recruits as if they are Igbo candidates, thereby short changing the Igbo numerical strengthen in the Nigerian Army.

"Simples". cool

^^ so investigate and dont start crying wolf until you actually see a wolf.

must someone be born and raised exclusively in the southeast before they're allowed to claim Igbo, or is the fact that the Igbo (speaking) soldiers say they're from northern states the actual problem.

It is for doubters to investigate and not ask unfounded questions that beg the topic.
Ohaneze is a very respected Igbo institution, are you saying they are crazy? Otherwise, what exactly is your point?
Re: Ohanaeze Demands Sack Of Army Chief by tpiah: 3:20pm On Jun 15, 2010
^^look, stop getting your panties in a bunch anytime you see a question you cant answer.

my point is simple:

the fact that someone claims to be from the north yet has an Igbo name, doesnt automatically mean they arent Igbo.

kapish?

if you dont get it then vamoose.

Address the topic and forget about my panties or if they are bunched, cos it will never be for you or your type.

The article never said Onyebuchi Titus and Christopher Obinna claimed to be from the North. It says they are from the North. Huge difference. Read the article before commenting; it even goes further to tell you where the example impersonators are; go and look for them. Ohaneze is 100% sure of their statement and have given simple people like you tools to investigate.

outsider weeping louder than the bereaved. Why not face your own issues, or are you now Igbo.

you do have some nerve, pointing fingers at others with Igbo names as if you think you have a point?

and quit jumping in agony at my posts, decrepit old f.ool.

my point remains: if anyone has solid proof the soldiers arent Igbo, then tender it.

How hard is it for you to go to Onyebuchi Titus and Christopher Obinna in Onitsha and Ijebu-Ode Barracks, Ogun state? How hard is it for you to ask the Ebonyi state govt for simple facts?
. . .Except you are just being weird and thinking about "bunched up panties". Your motive here is highly suspect.
