Jos Crisis : 80 Cows Die Of Mango Poisoning by evil666(m): 2:14am On Jun 17, 2010
About 80 cows belonging to Fulani herdsmen at Heipang in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State have died after eating mangoes suspected to be poisoned.
Speaking with our correspondent in Jos yesterday, the spokesperson of the Fulani herdsmen, Suleiman A. Jauro, alleged that some unfriendly people poisoned ripe mangoes which they put along the grazing route of the animals.

According to Jauro, 20 of the cows were pregnant while N400, 000 was spent in purchasing drugs and other traditional medicines used in the futile attempt to revive the animals. He alleged that a particular set of people in the area had been constantly asking them to come back to places they earlier vacated as a result of the Jos crises, but when they bring their animals they poison them. “What we are saying is that let them pay us. Whenever our animals mistakenly destroy their farm produce they always insist that we must pay them which we usually do without any argument, therefore, they must pay us for the animals they deliberately killed, after several stakeholders’ meetings we held at Barkin Ladi in order to fashion out ways to live in peace with one another these people turn around and attack us or our animals”, he said.

Reacting to the incident, Special Task Force (STF) spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Kingsley Umoh who confirmed the incident said 70 cows belonging to some Fulani herdsmen were poisoned through mangoes. According to Umoh, as at Friday last week when the incident happened, five cows died while 60 were revived through the use of some local method.

Col. Umoh said four persons had been arrested in connection with the incident, adding that some substances believed to have been used in committing the act were found with the suspects.

Nothing is funny, and hope you know that its better to kill a Fulani man than to kill his cow.

dustydee:

The thing is the cows are very precious to them to the extent that the herdsmen can protect the cows against their own lives.

But this nonsense in Jos should stop before humans becomes the victims (not that humans have not been killed before)

Where are the vets in the house? Do cattle normally eat mangoes? In all likelihood those animals died of some kind of contagious disease. Fulanis are trying to extract penance in human blood. This should not be taken lightly. Its a pity the igbo army officer is playing along probably for self preservation.

Arrested persons should be released and the cattle investigated for an epidemic.

I had no idea that cows were into mangoes. As a kid I love mangoes.
But you have to peel them first. I doubt that cows could do that, what's
with them not having an <opposable thumb> and all.
But seriously it's sad and immoral for people to kill a group of animals
for no good reason.

I heard from a reliable source that the Fulanis even have sex with the cows, especially when they are on the move and no woman around. So you could say there is an emotional attachment btw cows and Fulanis. grin grin grin grin grin grin

These Fulani's and their cows, sorry oooo. I think there is more to the death of the cows than the purported mango poisoning. Come to think of it, do cows really eat mangoes. I guess only in Naija, anything can happen.

D story &pix of d 'poisoned' cows as carried by Trust 2day is only aimed @causin more problms 4d already fragile state.In as much as d act is unfortunate,we shud not 4get d numbr of lives &properties wasted by d Fulanis.A life worths more dan 1m cows.
Re: Jos Crisis : 80 Cows Die Of Mango Poisoning by hercules07: 2:46pm On Jun 17, 2010
Cows do eat mangoes and if it is confirmed that they were deliberately poisoned, the antagonists should be severely punished, this act can instigate another round of bloodshed in that area.
It is not the story that will cause bloodshed, it is those who carry acts such as this that cause the bloodshed, Daily Trust is free to report this news as I believe there is freedom of expression enshrined in our "constitution". The Fulanis have wasted lives, but, they have also been killed, the only difference is the Southern Newspapers do not give their death wider coverage, we need to realize that we are all Nigerians and will inhabit the same space, we have no choice but to make our living together a good experience.

@skyndyp
Fulanis having intimacy with their cows is an inflammatory remark, I am sure you will not be happy if that is alluded to your tribe (even if it is true).

Re: Jos Crisis : 80 Cows Die Of Mango Poisoning by paulmamud(m): 3:56pm On Jun 17, 2010
how come no one is asking why the cows ate the mangoes in the first place? assuming thieves routinely break into you home and eat up your stuff then you decide to poison the food in your store room.is it murder if the thief eats and dies? i have never ever heard of any fulani man paying for the crops his animals destroy. Its always war between farmers and herdsmen!NO DIME WOULD HAVE BEEN PAID TO THE PLANTATION OWNER AND THE FULANI WOULD HAVE GOTTEN AWAY SCOTT FREE IF THE COWS NO DIE!Now no cow would eat mangoes or bananas sef! have you looked at the source of the story? dailytrust! Need i say more? Besides,the conspiracy between the STF and the Fulani is downright disgusting. STF nows goes to inspect dead cows and probably performed autopsies on the animals! To the extent of categorically saying the animals were poisoned.Sha, since they could escort the Fulani to wage war(allegedly) or to go look for missing cows which led to war(confirmed),i dont expect any different from the STF, fulani and dailytrust.

more cows go die sef if this people no stop all this their hostility. the govt and people of nigeria can only do so much. they should better respect each other and stop all these nonsense.

what is wrong with all of them sef.

Re: Jos Crisis : 80 Cows Die Of Mango Poisoning by DeepSoul(f): 4:34pm On Jun 17, 2010
What part of zi mango do these cows eat??
Zi peels, zi fruit itself or zi seed??
Cows aren't humans but zi thought of them dying en masse is not pleasant!!
They arent humans but they were given life by God. . . .

And besides, how do we know it's actual poisoning and not food poisoning??
They shd get samples of the supposed poisoned fruits and run tests on them to ascertain zi type of poison.

@Vquest
I had no idea that cows were into mangoes. As a kid I love mangoes.
But you have to peel them first. I doubt that cows could do that,

Ajebooo Vquest, Peeling off your mangoes makes them become processed, processed food are unarguably junk food.
Sad it had happened with you, but good news that you can reverse that on your offsprings to eat whole and healthy food.
As for your doubt as to whether cows would be able to peel mongoes before eating them, I guess you ment it to be a joke. To me the issue at stake is not a joking matter, so your doubt is better left uncleared hear. Take it to the appropriate forum.

@chaircover
Some herdsmen are also known to set fire to people’s farms to burn away the dry crops and waiting for the new shoots to emerge as food for their
herds.

Herdsmen go for wet or dry open-grass, or dry crops (usually bought) from farmlands, after harvests been taken away. You tale of "set fire to, is unheard of. Why would they set fire on what they are searching to feed their herds with?? The tale is more like a cover of a chair that you continue to change if you dont fancy the current one.

@skyndyp

Lets have that your reliable source, otherwise this is highly an inflammatory remark as hercules07 earlier stated. I guess some people are too carried away with the fact that "this is internet can put any-thought down, nobody can do anything to me is morally wrong. Please make a change angry angry.
Re: Jos Crisis : 80 Cows Die Of Mango Poisoning by tpiah: 6:07pm On Jun 17, 2010
quite obviously some evil and cowardly elements are trying to stoke up war in the area.

but an autopsy should be done on the cows and the actual cause of death ascertained to see if it was poisoning.

Re: Jos Crisis : 80 Cows Die Of Mango Poisoning by udezue(m): 6:34pm On Jun 17, 2010
There are better issues to deal with jare. A few dead cows aint one of em. In a civilized nation these cows should be in a secluded area grazing and getting fed not roaming all nooks and crannies for pasture.
Re: Jos Crisis : 80 Cows Die Of Mango Poisoning by omoabike: 6:42pm On Jun 17, 2010
It seems most of us making comment on this post did not read the story.
The Fulani herdsmen claim (spokesperson of the Fulani herdsmen, Suleiman A. Jauro, alleged that some unfriendly people poisoned ripe mangoes which they put along the grazing route of the animals.) that the people who poisoned their cattle are the one who invited them to come back to the area after the end of the crisis (He alleged that a particular set of people in the area had been constantly asking them to come back to places they earlier vacated as a result of the Jos crises, but when they bring their animals they poison them). They allege that they have always been paying for damages whenever their cattle wreck havoc on farmlands when it is required of them. Now they want the people who they have alleged poisoned their cattle to pay. The army spokesperson confirmed that some people have been arrested with what is suspected to have been used in poisoning the cow.
So in my own opinion, their grievances are genuine. Injustice is injustice, no other way to call it. For proper conflict resolution, if it is confirmed that the alleged culprits are guilty then they should be made to pay if they can or the government should compensate the Fulani herdsmen in the interest of peace.
We should not denigrate the herdsmen because of their legitimate grievances. People should learn to empathize with the other person to have a peaceful atmosphere.
