President Goodluck Jonathan has made good of his promises to drop any member of the yet to be confirm INEC nominee who are card caring member of People’s Democratic Party (PDP). This was made known in a letter dated June 17th 2010 sent to the Senate president, Senator David Mark.
Those dropped are Major General A.B. Mamman and Ambassador Mohammed Z. Anka. Though there is no replacement sent yet.
The Senate has however scheduled to conduct screening for the newly appointed Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega tomorrow. Prof Jega’s name was forwarded to the Senate by the the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan after its ratification by Council of State.
The letter to withdraw Maj. Gen. A.B. Mamman and Amb. Anka reads: Furtherance to my letter of 6th June 2010 forwarding the nominees for consideration of appointment as Chairman and National Electoral Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission, I write to seek the indulgence of the Senate to withdraw the following nominee from the list earlier sent:
Major Gen. A.B. Mamman
Amb. Mohammed Z. Anka
Their replacement will be forwarded in due course for the kind consideration and approval.
In the meantime, President Jonathan has acknowledged the condolence message of the Senate on the demise of the former President, Alhaji Umar Yar’Adua. He described the late president as an epitome of an ideal of the committed patriot. While he prayed for the soul of the departed President to rest in peace, he solicited for the continued support of the Senators to ’jointly build a synergy that will drive the strengthening and deepening of democratic process and engender peace and prosperity in our land’, the acknowledgement letter read.
