THE World Bank has ranked Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, low in efficiency and other indices of operational standards.

Nigeria ranked 110 out of the 167 countries surveyed making it among the lowest performing countries in the world as regards the efficiency of its customs service and border management processes.

Bureaucracy and corruption in customs clearance processes have long posed significant challenges to the trading community in Nigeria.

The World Bank in its ‘Connecting to Compete Report 2018 on trade logistics in the global economy’, which evaluated the logistic performance of 160 countries, using data gathered through a worldwide survey of logistics professionals on how easy or difficult they experienced trade logistics along six generic dimensions.

The dimensions include customs efficiency and border management clearance, quality of trade and transport-related infrastructure; ease of arranging competitively priced international shipments; competence and quality of logistics services; ability to track and trace consignments; and the frequency with which shipments reach consignees within the scheduled time.

Across all the indicators, Nigeria took the 110th place out of the 160 countries, one of the bottom 50 performers in the world.

In the report, Nigeria has a level of logistics constraints typical of low and middle-income countries.

In terms of customs efficiency and logistics, Nigeria emerged 147th and 112th respectively.
In International shipment, Nigeria was ranked 110th, while in logistics infrastructure, 78th, logistics competence, 112th; tracking and tracing, 92nd; and timeliness, 92nd position.

The report for the West African sub region, showed that Cote D Ivoire clinched the top position as the best performing country in trade logistics with a global ranking of 50. Benin Republic is next at the 76th position; Ghana, 106th; Nigeria, 110th; Togo, 118th; Gambia, 127th; Liberia, 143; and Sierra Leone, 156th.

The report stated: “The six Logistics Performance Index, LPI, indicators are divided into two main categories: areas for policy regulation which indicates main inputs to the supply chain, which includes customs, infrastructure, and services; as well as supply chain performance outcomes, which corresponds to LPI indicators of time, cost, and reliability- timeliness, international shipments, and tracking and tracing.

“Because operators on the ground can best assess the vital aspects of logistics performance, the LPI relies on an online survey of logistics professionals from the companies responsible for moving goods around the world: multinational freight forwarders and the main express carriers.

“Freight forwarders and express carriers are best positioned to assess how countries perform.
“Their views matter because they directly affect the choice of shipping routes and gateways, thereby influencing the decisions of firms to locate production, choose suppliers, and select target markets.”

The report listed the bottom 10 countries in the world to include Afghanistan, Angola, Burundi, Niger, Sierra Leone, Eritrea, Libya, Haiti, Zimbabwe and Central African Republic.

Sometimes i just think all these UN, EU & WORLD BANK, are being paid by IPOB to publish bad news about Nigeria.

Customs have been seizing drones coming into Nigeria, yesterday they discovered a PMS smuggling operation in Ipokia, one of the creeks in Ogun state, why can't we step up aerial reconnaissance in the customer area commands using these drones? since we cannot build walls, why can't we monitor our territory with technology ? Must everything wait until budget approval is obtained so that contractors can eat ?

The rot in the customs is on an astronomical level under Hameed Ali. It is when President Buhari leaves power that the level of corruption and nepotism perpetrated by Ali will be exposed.
Buhari appointed Ali to that position to rehabilitate him. It was never to reorganize the customs. Ali has been on that seat for three years now yet the morale of officers has never been lower. The corruption continues unabated through his surrogate personal assistant called Brigadier Buhari who does the collection of bribes from the Area Comptroller's on behalf of Ali while Ali continues to decieve the public with his sanctimonious anti corruption pretense.
When Ali boasts of beating revenue targets the question to be asked is "what was the exchange rate of Naira to the Dollar for the three years he has been at the helm of the customs.
It is all a smoke screen.

Watch as Lai Mohammed, Femi Adesina and MURIC release statements refuting this ranking. They will blame opposition, IPOB and enemies of Islam respectively.

Nigerians need to travel to Togo, Ghana, Gambia and smaller West African countries (not to talk of Europe or Asia) to see how port operations are done.

Your cargo will be out in three days in those places and people keep to the rules.

Nigeria must restructure fast so that our economy and the nation does not bleed to death.

Here in our dear country you will spend one week to pass through SON, another week waiting for inspection. One week to pass through the Customs post at the ports gate. Another one week through Apapa traffic! Then SON, Task Force and Customs will be waiting for you on the road thereafter. They need to see your papers again!!!

Meanwhile they are all bust buying 55 million Naira nomination forms to become the next monarch of Aso Rock!

The whole world is laughing at us. They are passing through here on a different kind of tourism! They are wondering loud - What is wrong with these 190 million people!

I thought they said the custom under Buhari has changed the narrative associated with that service or have we been hoodwinked by the propaganda peddlers as usual.

This hasn't got to do with custom efficiency, it has got to do with the whole economy at large, God help our country
