MY LYING HUSBAND

A STORY BY AYODELE ADEOYE

PART ONE

I started dating Gbenga while I was in 200 level in the university. I came from a family characterized with abject poverty. That type of poverty that affects everyone in the family. It will be difficult for anyone who has never been poor before to understand our level of poverty. As a growing girl, there were days I didn't go out for three days just because I can't afford tissue paper for my menstruation. Sometimes, I had used pieces of clothes that got me embarrassed severally. I will never forget the day I fainted in class when I was in secondary school. I fainted because I had not eaten for two days and I was menstruating simultaneously. The embarrassment is not in the fainting but how my menstrual clothe flung out of my pant to the sight of all my classmates, guys inclusive.

My father was never a lazy man but things just didn't work out for him. He attempted several businesses just to make ends meet but none gave him enough money to take care of us. He picked up several menial jobs but none could bring us out of suffering and penury. Our own poverty was like people operating under collective captivity. Like my father, my uncles too live from hands to mouth. There was no one we could run to or point at as living an average life, talk more of living in affluence. Good life, good shelter, good medicare, good education, etc were totally elusive. We only read about good lives in the pages of books and watch same on the screen of the TV.

Josephine started following men at the age of thirteen but dad couldn't talk much because we were hungry and only Jo could salvage us many times on the proceeds from fornication with the men she dated. Mum tried her best to put us in the right track in life but she couldn't achieve that because she does not have what it takes to stop us from being wayward. I promised myself and my God I will never defile myself no matter the suffering, but this became difficult by the day as our condition refused to improve. Some days, I spent all the night crying on an empty stomach praying to God to change the plight of my family.

Getting into the university was a rough journey for me. I had to do all I did because I didn't want the poverty in my family to continue. I vowed to be the sacrificial lamb to bring my family out of obscurity. I will do everything possible to bring out my family from this predicaments, I vowed. After securing admission for three years consecutively without getting into school, Mr Adeshina promised to sponsor my university education if I can be going out with him. Mr Adeshina is the husband of my mistress that I worked with for two years as a maid. He has done everything possible to take advantage of me but I was determined never to be defiled no matter how much I suffer. But it seemed I could no longer hold unto my promise as it seemed the only way I will ever go to the university was to succumb to his pressure.

The deal was sealed between me and Mr Adeshina. He bought me a jamb form and ensured I got admission into the university of Lagos. His wife, aunty Seyi was not happy about my admission because that will alter my service at home. Aunty Seyi was not aware her husband was dating me neither was she aware her husband was responsible for my admission into the university and all the financial burdens. We played our game so well that we never created any reason for aunty Seyi to doubt us or suspect anything between us. My problem started in 200 level when Mr Adeshina got another appointment with an international NGO and he was made the country's representative to Malaysia. He left and stopped fending for my education.

I will share with you the source of my family poverty in part two.....
