National Assembly Set To Create New States ! by wales(m): 6:47am On Jul 15, 2010
Senate President, David Mark, has declared that the present National Assembly is ready to make history by being the first legislature to create states outside the military regime.

He made this known today when he received a delegation agitating for the creation of Gurara State out of the present Kaduna State in Abuja. `

According to Mr. Mark, the Assembly would break the jinx that states could only be created by the military. He assured Nigerians that the committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution would be fair to all in the consideration of states to be created.

Describing the demand for Gurara State as genuine, the senate president noted that it was a clear demonstration of their desire to bring the people closer to the government, and urged them to unite and eschew religious or ethnic sentiments.

The leader of the delegation, Bawa Magaji, said the creation of the proposed Gurara State was approved by the Kaduna State House of Assembly in its resolution on Nov. 18, 2009. “The proposed Gurara State, with headquarters in Kachia, has a population of 3,383,207 and a land mass area of about 28,393 square kilometres,” he said.

The National Assembly in a democracy is the most appropriate organ of government to ensure fair and equitable creation of state to the mitigate some of the imbalaces created by the seemingly arbitrariness of the military. We are looking forward to to see the National Assembly breaking this jinz. The demand for the creation of Gurara State is an issue that is long over due. The proposed Gurara state is viable in terms of endowment of natural and human resources and even more viable than some of the existing states we have today. It will the best thing that will ever happen to all indigenes of kaduna state from both sides of the divide and will bring more economic development for this country. Ginger is the main stay of the economy of the proposed state and the specie in the world is found there and is a major commodity for international trade. This will bring foreign exchange to the country. We have the land mass and the people with the intellect who can make things happen. We look forward to that day the national assembly will look straight into our eyes and say good morning the inhabitants of the new Gurara state. I trust in the ability of the two Houses of the national assembly to do justice to this issue.

@ fntekim LOL

Just so you get an idea of how Gurara State Might look from a map i made. the one natural boundary that would divide the two state is the kaduna river.

Thesse people must not be serious about these, cos if they try they are going to cause misunderstanding for people
Re: National Assembly Set To Create New States ! by Beaf: 12:39pm On Jul 15, 2010
We will soon have more states that are totally unviable and rely 100% on other states for sustainance.
Nigerias problem is not states, it is the lack of standards, organisation and institutions.

This rubbish will only take us back several decades. Our fake federal system only makes these things worse; lets have true federalism or break up.

We need more states, and let Naija itself be divided into three

Soon? most of them are a joke as it is. There are probably not more than 10 states that can stand on their own 2 feet without subventions.

Creating more tribes and more primitive tribal instincts, backwardness and blind tribal affiliations that are synonymous with nigeria state.

Stone age motherfuckers.
Re: National Assembly Set To Create New States ! by Ournaija: 1:12pm On Jul 15, 2010
Creating more States is creating more problems. It will lead to waste of human and natural resources. It will also lead to total dependant on oil. It`s better we fuse the Nigerian States to 5 or 6 regions and apply true federalism.

Since we started state creation things has never been the same. The groundnut pyramid in Kano has disappeared while nobody could even remember if cocoa existed in the South West. The Palms in the South East has vanished into thin  air. The way forward is true Federalism. I dont know why we are so scared of doing the right thing especially on the issue of true federalism.

I guess some people are benefiting more than others the way things are. To hell with Garagara no sorry Gurara State.

Besides, wasn't the midwest created in the 1st republic?
Re: National Assembly Set To Create New States ! by SkyBlue1: 1:28pm On Jul 15, 2010
As long as the legislature is also willing to merge some unviable states together to form more economically independent entities, then sure. It is easy to shout "give me state" when it is not you that would be paying to support the existence of more bureacracy. This so called 'federal structure' needs a serious reworking.
Re: National Assembly Set To Create New States ! by Fhemmmy: 2:10pm On Jul 15, 2010
So State creation will bring the people close to the govt?
I guess that statement means that our current systems aint working.
We have local govt, state govt and the federal govt, so how would breaking the state into 2 and spending so much money on projects that are not necessary, the states that we have are yet to function well, now we wanna create more?

Nigeria . . . I truly hail thee
Re: National Assembly Set To Create New States ! by TMemos: 2:19pm On Jul 15, 2010
Shrink the existing states into 6 and apply true federalism. Perish the thought that creation of additional states will bring government closer to the people. There is no part of today's Nigeria that is not covered by the 36 states + Abuja and the 774 local governments.
Re: National Assembly Set To Create New States ! by Nobody: 2:33pm On Jul 15, 2010
Instead of merging some states together in order to enhance efficiency a nd service delivery, these guys are creating more.i dont blame them,it's just another avenue to steal more money since all they do in the end as governors is to collect their share of the national wealth;pay salaries and nothing else.
bunch of old reta.rds

Its a good development if its achieved, Especially in the north. It will atleast allow people with common values stay together in a state.

My only problem with such decision in Nija is that it is only an avenue for enriching a few more politicians at the expense of a greater part of the populace.

Grassroot democracy is still a far fetched concept in our polity.Until we have a good system to check the excesses of our public offices, whatever we do is still a closed circle game.
Re: National Assembly Set To Create New States ! by mykonyx(m): 6:48pm On Jul 15, 2010
It`s obvious that state creation is not apt for the statusque of this country. This National Assembly should try and develop this country before creating more state. creation of state is easy, but development is what we lack and need in nigeria, we need it in all ramification of our ministries
Re: National Assembly Set To Create New States ! by Zenyes: 9:10pm On Jul 15, 2010
The creation of GURARA State is a horrendous idea. This is not a matter of whether this civilian regime can demonstrate its power. And that should never be the driving-force behind state creation. The National Assembly must conduct an Economic Viability Assessment to discover whether the region of Gurara warrants the creation of its own state.

What does Gurara produce in State revenue? How many people does Gurara employ? What are the conditions of roads, schools, and hospitals in the Gurara? Creating a state out of that area cannot guarantee the provision of social amenities and infrastructure to the region.

State creation is a very strong move that is harder to dissolve. For example, tomorrow if the state is not doing well, the indigenes/settlers will find it very difficult to rejoin with their Kaduna and Niger State neighbours.

They want to put a knife and divide the things which hold us together, so that we will fall apart. angry

My fellow country people, please say 'No' to further State creation. kiss

No to further state creation ke? I am open to more states o. In fact let people be a state unto themselves if they want, as long as we start implementing a system whereby states receive NO derivation funds or other such financial aid from the federal government in order to survive. The states should be supporting the federal government and not the other way around. You can be a state unto yourself if you want, as long as you are ready to be paying taxes to the federal government. Unfortunately we have an upsidedown system which enables people to afford the luxury of suddenly realising they "need" a state of their own, the audacity. There are certain fundamental things in Nigeria that need to be fixed by passing legislature, and a lot of the rest would just fall into place - an actual federal system is one of them.
