Onitsha as an economic powerhouse have always be a prime catalyst for Lagos demographic and economic changes over time. I have always maintain in this forum that Lagos journey into an African mega city of the 21st century was ignited by Onitsha. By the second half of 20th century, Onitsha have already became the biggest market in West Africa.Civil war, structural adjustment policies of early 80s, marginalization, dearth of infrastructure (no roads, seaport, international airport etc.) forced so many traders in their millions to move to Lagos in the eighties and thus, Lagos journey into mega city have begun. Bokoharam, internet, globalization, strong/rooted Igbo diasporan population, the successive policies/call for Igbos to invest back home, gradual yorubalization of Lagos State etc, all have resulted in Onitsha witnessing Urban expansion and population growth.(still with no seaport, rails, bad roads, second niger bridge, no electricity). Onitsha of 70s, 80s, 90s don't exist anymore. The boundaries have gone down. Urbanization & good network of roads in Anambra State have connected Onitsha to Asaba. Onitsha to Nnewi to Ekwulobia to Awka to Ozubulu, Ihiala, Okija and all in between to no boundaries.
I know that Onitsha metropolitan area is over 8million people a long time ago and mentioned it many times in this forum in the past in which many doubted. Most of the Onitsha Population are based in Obosi, Nkpor & Ogidi with a combined Population of over 4.5million people.

Even at that, it still can't be true. Onitsha proper has a very small landmass and population. The last census attests to that. And even with the addition of the so-called neighboring cities, nothing suggests what is being peddled in that report. No way Onitsha can be larger than Abuja, Kano, Ibadan, or PH, be it in landmass or population. No concrete data supports that. This report's conclusions are baseless.

Did you say Nigerian Census? LOLLLLzzz............ grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin
Even the mentally insane know Nigerian census is the MOST FRAUDULENT allocation of numbers to deserts just to steal oil money because of Nigeria's method of sharing revenue from other people's territory.

The true population is there for anyone to see. Even satellite imagery of the so called big cities in Nigeria reveals the huge SCAM called Nigerian census.

Demographia.com sometime ago released its report on the largest cities in the world by urban built-up area and population and the result isn't different from this.
For landmass, Onitsha is the largest in Nigeria and second largest in population after Lagos.
Anybody who had moved around Nigeria should know this.

I don't think those places in bold are included in the Onitsha metro area stats for now , maybe in the future as the state is experiencing massive urbanization at the moment. And it is Nkwelle Ezunaka and not Nkwerre

Quite true and factual. I'm always amazed at the urban sprawl that spreads out whenever I'm coming back to the East from Asaba. Endless spread of high-rise buildings as far as the eyes can see yet the stvpid country called Nigeria that always has a way of showing its madness would rate Onitsha below several shanty towns.

He is correct. Onitsha has fused with Asaba and the surrounding areas, what separates the two former distinct towns is just the Niger bridge and already many people now live in Asaba but work in Onitsha.

This isn't about landmass, ok? It's not rocket science that the report is a fraud. It didn't even say largest city in Nigeria but Africa. Like seriously?? Even within Nigeria Onitsha can't be third largest, let alone in Africa. Where would that leave Kinshasa (DRC) with 10-million population in the city, Luanda, Nairobi, etc. In Nigeria, Onitsha no fit near PH, Abuja, Kano, and Ibadan. I doubt it is even more populous than Aba, I seriously doubt it.

I heard so. It takes about 3 minutes to cross from Onitsha to asaba, millions come to market and return to live in Asaba with their families.

You might be right, now add the figures of Obosi, nkwelle, Ojoto, oba, Nkpor, Ogidi, Ogbunike, Okija, nnewi and asaba to get the real onitsha figures. That's what THIS report is telling you, the network providers are saying a different thing.

Don't cry for Ndi Igbo, we can take care of ourselves. There are more three storey residential buildings privately owned (not company's) in just Onitsha than the entire Lagos. What you will see in Lagos are mostly 1 stories and bungalows.

Someone has shown data on this forum before that gives an idea of population spread per state, one that is more plausible and credible, and it clearly shows that the entire population of Anambra is somewhere around 5 to 6-million or thereabouts. Even if you decide to claim all of Anambra state as part of Onitsha city, it still won't make it the third largest. You people should stop deceiving yourselves.

They said city and you are bringing states. What I know is that Onitsha is larger than what your country can possibly estimate. Lagos is larger than Kano 2X, but officially, Kano is Larger than Lagos 1.5X, but look at the energy you are expending here just because it is Igbo.

Save that energy for Lagos. We don't even need that much population. We already have 45-50 million Igbo nation to care for. You can equally put defence against that, we don't care.

Based on the energy you are pursuing this with, you must be a Yoruba moslem.

Mr. Atikulator, use your brain for once. Your brethren presented a quack report without any sound basis postulating that Onitsha is the '3rd largest city in Africa' based on 'estimating'. In terms of size, Anambra has the 2nd smallest land mass, after Lagos. And as far as population is concerned, there hasn't been a credible census in this country in a a very long time. But I have showed you a data of active phone lines (from telecoms companies that at least shows the number of Anambra people that keep their phones active within the period of 4-months. Of course the data can't represent the entire population of the state but at least it tells us the number of adults or teens who have kept their phones active within a 4-months period.

Now, are you telling me that the the state hosting the so-called 3rd largest city in Africa, with an active population and considerable commercial concentration, can only muster 4-million active phone lines within 4-months?? Where is the rest of the population of the state? Or is it that they refuse to use telephones in 4 straight months, maybe because they are too broke to load/recharge them?

If Onitsha were as large as being claimed, it would certainly reflect in the sheer number of phone lines of the entire state, moreso considering that it is a commercial city. So I ask you, why didn't that data capture such a huge population if truly it exists? Look at other states that host large cities such as Kano, Oyo, Rivers,Kaduna, and the city state Abuja, and then try and explain why those cities record far higher active phone lines within a 4-month period than Anambra that is supposed to be hosting the 3rd largest city in Africa. Be sincere with yourself bro and keep your ego out of it.

Stop associating Onitsha with other towns and cities around it. All those cities/Towns you mentioned are independent. It's like annexing Lagos with Ogun or Lagos with Cotonou, just because both Cities share the same boundaries.

Lagos first in Nigeria followed by Onitsha, Nigeria population captured Onitsha town not Onitsha metropolitan, Onitsha metro covers 11 towns and seven LGs. Onitsha town is just 2 Lgs
