It would have been better if you guys have something to say, shouting shut up without backup analysis or comment to criticise his is just like noise making or an agreement to his submission.

Ur post is so senseless to the extent that there's no need to back up with any form of analysis

theoldpretender:

Some back up history

1.In 2012, GEJ raised fuel prices at the pump to 140 per liter. Protests knocked it down to 97.at the time, landing cost of fuel was 99 naira.

2.By 2016,fuel was at 87 naira, landing cost was 132 naira, and because of falling oil prices, govt of Bubu raised prices to 145, ending subsidy at that time.

3.When the landing prices rose to above 160 naira, subsidies returned under the guise of under recovery.

4.Because of the 2012 protests, debts were incurred in paying the marketers subsidy claims. These debts made subsidies unsustainable by 2013 (which is why GEJ plan of 2012 made sense), and the debts rose. It is only just now we are paying them. Off.

5.For govt to remove subsidies, it simply has to stop setting prices and allows marketers set their own price. Because this means politically expensive prices of 250 and above, govt would rather pay subsidy than.risk a revolt.

Actually the subsidy can be removed. And Buhari ''showed'' the country the way in January 2016

By January 2016 the combination of a senselessly pegged overvalued exchange had began to take its toll and the Naira had fallen to 300 to $1 while the pegged rate remained at 197 was taking its toll on petrol imports

There was now a double subsidy in reality for fuel imports. The government was not only subsidising imports of crude but also heavily subsiding the the dollars that was used to import it. The strain was showing and that month of January 2016 the fuel scarcity was so sever that everywhere was at a standstill. I have never witnessed scarcity that bad.

It was so bad that the FG decided to increase the price to 145 per litre from 87. The strain of that scarcity was so much that there was hardly any protest at the price increase. NLC threatened a strike and for once the populace ignored them. Even they understood that the average man was relieved now that fuel was plenty once the price was increased to 145. Interestingly at that price there was no subsidy at all!

If the government wants to remove the price it simply must allocate a certain sum yearly, a sum unable to cover the subsidy and the government sticks to it

It should release this sum quarterly and when it runs its course, the government should simply refuse to add a penny, citing the need for fiscal discipline as the excuse

A regular repeat of this will weigh people down just like the mother of all fuel scarcity did and I'm sure the people will simply prefer a steady supply of a petrol at the market price rather than the inefficiency, bedlam and stress associated with the hubris of subsidized petrol

casualobserver2:
It sounds like PDP under Atiku is planning IMF strategy. They have already said they want to sell NNPC and they are now complaining about subsidy. If they sell NNPC and ban subsidy then what will happen to the masses?

Edited to change EFCC to NNPC. Apologies to the house.

Sirjamo:
The only way to stop subsidies completely is to get our refineries working again or build new ones, or deregulates the downstream sectors 100% and let the masses bear the costs.

Obi and his boss want to remove subsidies and leave Nigerians to pay more for PMS which will lead to more inflation and make life difficult for us.

Buhari and Osinbajo want to keep subsidies for the mean time until private refineries currently under construction come on board, then, we will be able to stop subsidies completely without creating more economic hardship for the people.

Whether you plan it or you don't plan it it will happen with the level of borrowing that we now have which is not sustainable especially when you consider what the money is used for

to pay salaries of unproductive workers and politicians..............

Nigeria needs $80 plus oil to SURVIVE

Buhari has no ideas and Atiku is no different

Buhari is not borrowing to pay salaries, pls stop misinforming the public.

Buhari is using the $1 Billion Subsidy to pay for INEFFICIENCY, it takes a trailer 2 weeks to get into the wharf and 1 week to come out. -Dr Peter Obi, PDP Vice Presidential Candidate. Watch the video below:

Seun should simply have asked Peter Obi, why hasn't the price of Diesel gone down since it was completely deregulated some 7/8 years ago?

Just mouthing inefficiency is playing to the gallery. The private sector has been efficiently and effortlessly bringing in diesel into the country at a higher cost, so what has inefficiency go to do with it?
