Prophet Samuel Abiara: 'Pay Workers N30,000 Minimum Wage Now' by NaijaRoyalty(m): 8:57am On Jan 04, 2019
A former General Evangelist of the Christ Apostolic Church, Prophet Samuel Abiara, has asked the Federal Government to accede to the N30,000 minimum wage demand of the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The cleric urged the government to prevent any strike action that could damage the economy.

Abiara, who spoke in his New Year message, said the government should give priority to the masses in 2019.

He said, “I advise the Federal Government to pay the minimum wage the Nigeria Labor Congress demanded. The government must do something reasonable about workers’ salaries. They should not allow them to go on strike because it will cripple the economy.

“Nigerian workers are demanding $87, which is N30,000 only. What they are asking for is not too much because the prices of things have gone up, especially food items. The wealthy and the poor buy things from the same markets.”

On the 2019 elections, he warned political leaders against hate speech, saying it could destabilise the country.

He appealed to Nigerians to vote for candidates of their choice without fear, saying nobody should sell his vote“Do not listen to prophecies of doom. The future of Nigeria is bright and good and you will live to witness it. This year, don’t spend your money alone; share your food and other resources with the less privileged. Don’t be lazy; work hard to achieve your dreams,” he added.

This is my perspective on the minimum wage issue. If Government increase minimum wage (MW) to N30,000, does this mean those that were on N30,000 initially etc will also receive a corresponding increase? Assuming governments across Nigeria could pay this new MW by being proactive in plugging leakages and improving IGR (highly unlikely). I reckon government jobs account for 5-7% of jobs in Nigeria. How does one expect the private sector to adhere to the New MW policy? Labour costs are the most expensive costs for most companies, what I suspect will occur is a lot of downsizing along the line leading to even greater unemployment although it may have a positive effect on underemployment. Most definitely there needs to be some type of increase due to the rising cost of living but it needs to be discussed in depth. If Nigeria had a stable economy I would have suggested adjusting yearly according to inflation.

The higher the salary, the bigger the tithe. Seriously speaking. N30,000 is a mere stipend. Governments need to do even better.

There needs to be an executive bill to NASS so that not only fg complies but States as well. NASS only approve fg budget so it's not sufficient as States has the buck of the workers
