Good stuff babapupa.
At least they're doing some work, even if they are stealing.
Most governors are stealing period, taking time out to flog striking teachers, and send thugs after their opponents.
I was at Ota over the weekend. You need to see the bridge those monkeys were fighting over. Daniel and Bankole should have stones tied around their necks and flung into the nearest deep canal. angry

Fashola Hands Over Largest Purpose Built Court House In Nigeria

Names new Igbosere Magistrate Court after first Lagos Magistrate, J.I.C. Taylor

Fashola Hands Over Largest Purpose Built Court House In Nigeria
…Names new Igbosere Magistrate Court after first Lagos Magistrate, J.I.C. Taylor

Aug 11, 2010 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Wednesday formally opened the Igbosere Magistrates' Court with a pledge that his administration would ensure that the constitutional provisions for securing the liberty of citizens are given the fullest expression in the State.

Addressing a large gathering of both serving and retired Judges and Justices of the High and Supreme courts and other members of the Bar and Bench, members of the State Executive Council and Legislature, Traditional Rulers and top government functionaries as well as other stakeholders at the premises of the court, Governor Fashola also announced that the new court would flag off the first ever sitting of Magistrates on Saturdays to dispense justice in the State in accordance with the State's reformed Magistrates' Court Law.

According to the Governor, who said the new Magistrates' Court Law was replacing the one that has been in use in the last 38 years, explained, however, that the Saturday sitting of Magistrates would be done "in a manner and in rotation to be administratively determined".

"This will, hopefully, put an end to the practice where citizens are detained from Friday until Monday simply because there was no court to admit them on bail", the Governor said hinting that the Government would in future explore the possibility of overnight sitting "such that the liberty of the citizen is further secured".

Giving a brief review of the State's Judicial reforms, Governor Fashola, who said the dream started in 1999, declared "The dream was shared by many of us who signed on to a common cause in pursuit of liberty, freedom and justice in a free society as championed by one man, my illustrious predecessor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and pursued with resoluteness by another, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN)", adding that it started with a clear understanding of the need and purpose for the reform of the Judiciary if democracy was to survive.

"The infrastructural, procedural and welfare reforms that have taken place at the High Court level of the Justice sector of Lagos State and the impact nationwide require no further repetition. That was the beginning of the revolution. As successors to that administration, it was clear to us that those achievements must never be thrown away. It was our welcome burden and immense privilege to build on them", the Governor said.

He added, "We recognize that as Africa's fastest growing mega-city, law and order were critical pillars for the sustenance of democratic life and the magistracy was the most pivotal access point of contact for citizens with the justice system. This is the level of judicial system that deals with housing; especially the landlord and tenant matters. It also deals with road traffic offences and many violations that are not of a felonious nature, including sanitation and environmental offences and those everyday challenges that determine our human development index as a people".

Praising the State's Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Olasupo Shasore for his commitment to the completion of the Court House and others across the State, Governor Fashola further disclosed that the new court, with 22 courtrooms and Magistrates' Chambers, was the first of a total of nine court houses at different advanced stages of completion across the State.

The Governor described the courthouse as the largest purpose built court building in Nigeria saying in addition to being equipped with modern verbatim court reporting facilities aimed at relieving Magistrates of the effort of the obsolete system of recording proceedings in longhand, he has approved the engagement of 30 Verbatim Reporters to serve in already designated offices in the court building.

"They will provide the valuable court records that will reduce time spent on litigation in the magistrates' Courts and the Judiciary at large", the Governor said, adding that with a variety of new legislations to respond to issues like climate change, environmental protection, noise pollution, public Health and safety, urban planning and building control, the new magistracy Law and increased courtroom capacities, the State is in a good position to take its rightful place in the global community as a City-State where law and order thrives and the rule of law is observed.

Reviewing the history of Magistracy as an institution in Lagos, Governor Fashola, who said there were seven Chief Magistrates in the Lagos Colony between 1862 and 1905, paid glowing tributes to the celebrated jurists of the State who, according to him, "started their careers as Magistrates" adding that "the Magistracy gradually became a natural ground for the making of jurists of uncommon qualities".

Such celebrated jurists, the Governor named included Hon. Sir Olumuyiwa Jibowu, Sir Adetokunbo Ademola and S.O, Lambo, among others, adding, "But amongst all these great jurists who started from the magistracy, there was undoubtedly a first amongst these equals. He was Mr. Justice John Idowu Conrad Taylor".

He described the late Jurist who was appointed temporary magistrate in 1947 and a Judge of the High Court of Western Nigeria in 1956, as an upright, courageous and a brilliant judge pointing out that the new Igbosere Courthouse was dedicated to J.I.C. Taylor's memory "in recognition of his Spartan and undiminished service and contributions to the Lagos judiciary".

In his welcome remarks earlier, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Olasupo Shasore (SAN), said the Court House, which he described as part and parcel of the Lagos judiciary, "is a demonstration of the commitment of the present administration to the reform of the State's Justice System".

Pointing out that the new courthouse is for the good of the public, Shasore declared, "This administration will be remembered for its commitment to the reform of the Justice system in the State", adding that the court is for public order and the propagation of justice in the State.

In her own remarks, the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Inumidun Akande, praised the present administration under the leadership of Governor Fashola whom she described as "purposeful and focused" saying the current new dawn for the Lagos Judiciary is the administration's brainchild.

The Chief Judge also commended the Governor for naming the new court house after the late J.I.C. Taylor describing the gesture as "very thoughtful of you given the immense contributions of Justice Taylor to the growth of the State's judiciary".

One of the highlights of the occasion was the unveiling of the plaque of the Court House by the Governor who was assisted by members of the family of Justice J.I.C. Taylor.

Also present at the occasion, were the Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Adebisi Sosan, members of the State Executive Council, His Royal Highness, Oba Rilwan Babatunde Akiolu 1, the Oba of Lagos, traditional chiefs of Lagos, members of the Judiciary and other top government functionaries.

e-Health Project

The Lagos State Government, acknowledging the need for adequate health information storage and delivery embarked upon the e-Health project; the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Science is implementing an Interactive Hospital Information System Software & Technology in some of the State owned hospital facilities.

Governor Fashola championed the electronic charting for Lagos State government health system which was to start with a pilot scheme at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, (LASUTH), Ikeja. The Lagos State Health Management Information System (HMIS) project is a broad based modular Hospital Administration System Database solution that allows the operational procedures and stream of patients in a health facility to be coordinated thus ensuring prompt and effective healthcare delivery.

The project, which is in furtherance of the state government’s vision of promoting effective service delivery, is being put into operation in phases to involve all state owned secondary and tertiary health facilities. The pilot phase commenced fully on the 5th January, 2009 at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, (LASUTH), General Hospitals Isolo and Lagos and is currently in its second phase which involves the General Hospitals in Alimosho, Badagry, Ikorodu, Epe, Somolu, Surulere, Gbagada, Orile Agege, Ajeromi and Lagos Island Maternity Hospital.

This system that has been set in place should ensure that any patient in a Lagos State hospital will be registered on a central computer server with the information readily available to the doctors treating a patient, who will have simultaneous access to the up-to-date medical records and treatment information. The links to the diagnostic modules ensures doctors online can order tests while results can be returned via the same channel. Critical minutes saved by this prompt information availability will save a lot of lives as will be shown in statistical data to be maintained.

There is a complete billing system incorporated into the structure that will ensure proper accounting and transparency. When a patient arrives at a department in LASUTH, for instance and has been identified as needing some services, the patient or person accompanying him or her will be given a bank teller with the details of service to be rendered and the cost. This teller is now presented at the stipulated bank where payment is made. This way, it is unnecessary for staff to handle the funds and reduces risk of theft or loss. The reporting and statistics has also been built in and will be able to conform to international standards. The solution is web based and is being complemented with a wide area computer network linking all the hospitals. Authorization levels would be determined for all relevant workers to ensure patient confidentiality.

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola made many campaign promises to the citizens of Lagos State and it is gladdening to Lagosians that he is keeping to his promises. Better health care service in Lagos state is one of the promises he made and he is certainly making an effort to make the health service better in Lagos State.

This was floated last year and I'm glad they are following up on it. It's called digital/electronic health records in the US. This is part of what the US is battling with with the health care reforms.

In our case in Lagos, if a woman living in Ikorodu once visited any government health center with headache in Ikorodu and weeks or years later in Ikeja with the same or any other complaints, the info is available to doctors and other health care delivery folks in Ikeja, they'll have the original and other complaints, history and physical, treatment rendered including prescribed medications.

Another A+ grade for our boys in Alausa.

You want good roads and bridges, you want better and good looking environment, you want your street cleaned, you want your trash picked up, you want good fire department and Ambulance service, you want good schools, you want good hospitals, you want low cost housing, you want quality infrastructures and many many more.

In all the societies where they have all the above, people pay taxes. Paying taxes is the norm in any sane and functioning society. You can not have it both ways.

Solid Waste Management Scheme

The Lagos Waste management Authority (LAWMA), as parts of its efforts to strengthen the achievements of sanitation and environmental discipline in the state, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the government, the Clinton Foundation and the Konsadem Consortium to develop the first modern integrated solid waste project in Lagos.

The project is a partnership among three credible brands to deliver an integrated solid waste management model for other communities across the world to emulate. The project is to be completed via Finance, Design, Build, Operate and Transfer (FDBOT) structure by the private sector under a 20 year concession agreement would lead to the development of a comprehensive project which includes closure, collection and utilization of landfill gas (LFG) the two existing dumpsites while incorporating a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) financing platform.

Four years ago, the state gave an overview of what it intends to do and has been implementing it in stages, stressing that the state is now at a stage of institutionalizing best practices in landfill management and gas recovery and working to ensure that most of the processes of management is classified as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). According to Governor Fashola, the present administration is not comfortable with the way the land fill sites are being managed, but is doing its best to raise the standard of what currently exists by building structures that would be comparable with any of such structure of similar facilities anywhere in the world.

The first phase, the integrated solid waste management site is located in the Epe area of Lagos and will be designed to accept a maximum 900 tons of municipal waste daily. Clinton Foundation is delighted to partner with the progressive government of Lagos State on the integrated solid waste management project. The Clinton Foundation is very pleased with the expected outcome, which is the reduction of Carbon emission and a very positive contribution to global efforts to address the issue of Climate Change. The Foundation will continue to give all the required technical support to ensure that the project is successfully completed.

I'm talking about multiple taxes, about overtaxation, about cronyism, a clear disregard for the people for whom supposedly these things are in place. Are you aware for example that C of O in a place like Ikoyi is about N60m? Are you aware that new car licence fees is about N300k(don't doubt this)?

I support the payment of proportionate taxes but not overburdening the paying few in the name of giving them dividends of democracy, afterall, the LIRS themselves admit that they've just captured just about 25% of the taxable people.

On cronyism, what is Makanjuola Alabi doing in LASAA when he is also a practitioner, cornering the juicest locations for himself? So many examples of this in Fashola's govt.

Fashola Moves to Stem Urban-Rural Drift

Nigeria: Fashola Moves to Stem Urban-Rural Drift

Olasunkanmi Akoni & Monsur Olowoopejo

12 August 2010

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has handed over 500 projects to rural communities across the state in a bid to stem rural-urban drift.

The benefiting rural communities are spread across the state's five divisions. The projects ranged from rural electrification, modified type 'A' water project, toilets to rural jetties and micro-water works among others.

Modified type A water projects and rural electrification projects were handed over to rural communities in Eti-Osa and Ibeju-Lekki local councils.

At the hand-over ceremony, Special Adviser to the Governor on Establishment and Pensions, Mr. Adebanjo Olufemi who represented the Governor, told the villagers that the projects were meant to bring development to them and to ensure that they were not left out in the scheme of things in the state.

Commissioner for Rural Development, Prince Lanre Balogun, whose ministry executed the projects, said government believed that people in rural and urban areas should have access to social amenities.

He said siting of rural electrification and water projects in rural areas would greatly help to curb rural-urban migration in the state.

On maintaining the projects, Balogun said a team of engineers from the ministry normally go out to interact with the people to know which project needed attention and maintenance.

He added that when the projects were handed over to the benefiting communities, the Community Development Association, CDA were normally instructed to ensure the projects were maintained.

The commissioner said that the state government had adopted the Integrated Rural Development approach in tackling the numerous problems confronting rural communities across the state.

However, 17 rural projects such as rural electrification, Modified Type A water projects and Neighbourhood Watch posts were handed over to rural communities in Eti-Osa and Lekki areas of the state.

The benefiting communities are Orile-Ilasan, Aro, Ilado, Ogoyo, Otunla, Alatishe, Okun Debojo, Solu-Alade, Eleko, Museyo, Akodo, Ita Marun, Olomowewe, Okun Folu and Akodo-Ise.

Also on the tour were the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Mr. Paul Kalejaiye, the Permanent Secretary, directors, engineers, among others.

Crime in Lagos State down 75 percent - Fashola

August 16, 2010 11:55AM

Crime in Lagos State has gone down by 75 percent, Gov. Babatunde Fashola has said. He made this claim at the inauguration of projects in Iba and Ojo Council Areas. Fashola attributed the feat to the anti-crime strategies of the Police and the state Neighbourhood Watch.

He commended the security agencies for effectively fighting crime in the state.

"The crime rate in the state has been reduced by 75 percent. Both the Police and the Neigbourhood Watch have helped to nip crimes in the bud. Reporting of serious criminal activities to the police has also improved and this has helped millions of residents and investors to carry out their activities under a conducive atmosphere. All these have made Lagos State a preferred destination," Fashola said.

Fashola also urged the security agencies and the people to also ensure violence-free elections in 2010.

"We urge everyone to be vigilant and report any untoward activity in their communities to the police as we approach the 2011 elections," he said.

He also appealed to the Community Development Associations (CDAs) to protect the projects from being vandalised. The Commissioner for Rural Development, Mr Olanrewaju Balogun, said the amenities were part of the 500 projects approved by the state government aimed at transforming rural areas.

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) of Lagos state has received commendation for the concesioning of Lekki/Epe Expressway, described as a real step towards building a true mega city. The commendation came from Nollywood actor, Mr. Ayo Badmus, South West (Zone D) Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Eniola Opeyemi, and an activist, Razaq Olooko-Oba.

The trio, in a chat with journalists in Lagos, described as “subjective and sheer political opportunism,” the continuous efforts of “some misled people of the state” to discredit the project.
mr. Badmus, who advised that people should rather be encouraged and not incited against the government over the project pointed out that “the project is a laudable phenomenon at returning the city to the Lagos of our dream where you can go about your business 24 hours a day unmolested.”

according to Opeyemi, ithere was nothing unusual or criminal about the arrangement and dismissed as untrue, claims of massive rip off by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“We must know that for every development, there must be some sacrifice by the people wanting to enjoy it. The London Bridge and other phenomenal projects that we refer to came with sacrifices by the people enjoying them today,” Opeyemi reminded.

He stated further that “We have clamoured for development throughout our life and now that Fashola is giving us a dose of it, we think we should support him.”
Olooko-Oba, who is the Secretary of Oodua Self Determination Group (COSEG), threw more light on the intended operation of the handlers of the project, explaining that it was the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) arrangement that was obtainable the world over.
“For us, we know that BOT arrangement is only meant for the company to realise its money for a duration stated in the contract. So, if you look at it, Lagosians are the major beneficiaries because LCC will have to transfer the project to them.

“Unlike what the PDP critics are saying, what we know of this project is that residents of the area are to enjoy global fee, which is that you only pay these tolls only once a day, unlike other business people who throng the roads. So, the issue of rip off does not arise,” the youthful activist explained.
While urging the PDP to cease fire in their continued propaganda against the project, Oloko-Oba wondered, “why have the same PDP chieftains never criticised the Federal Government on the concessioning of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to the Bi-Courtney company. when you look at their criticism from this angle, you see that something does not add up,” he said.

The COSEG scribe said the PDP was merely criticising the project to score cheap political points ahead of the 2011 poll admonished all patriotic people of Lagos State to appreciate the developmental strides of the state government appeling that whatever grudge they had against the project should be subjected to meaningful dialogue.

Medical Waste disposal

The NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture medical incinerator project built in partnership with the Lagos State government at the Epe General Hospital was recently official commissioned. This was a collaborative initiative to ensure that hazardous medical waste in Lagos and environs will no longer be disposed indiscriminately.

The brand new, 75kg/hr Pennram Medical Waste Incinerator is the first of its kind in Lagos State and second in the country. It has the capacity to handle a maximum of 1,500kg per week of medical waste from the Lagos State government designated hospitals. In order for the project to operate at optimum capacity, a 40 KVA soundproof generator, 33,000-liter diesel tank as well as the renovation of an existing building on site to serve as the storage facility and the operations office, were commissioned along with the incinerator.

Previously the hospitals owned by the State government had no designated means or site for medical waste disposal and even Chevron Nigeria Ltd., was taking its medical waste as far as Warri/ Escravos in Delta State for safe disposal. The long storage time between generation of the waste and final disposal increased the potential risk of exposure to those who have to collect, transport and dispose the waste, and also to the environment.

“This facility is a product of NNPC/Chevron JV’s tradition of care and commitment to healthcare in its areas of operation. It cost the NNPC/Chevron JV hundreds of millions to be build. We have committed to bear the annual maintenance cost, also in the tens of millions. The project will serve the need of the Epe General Hospital, other Lagos State government hospitals within the area as well as Chevron’s medical facilities in Lekki and Gbagada,” Governor Fashola said. He went further to explain that the project would benefit the Lagos State Government by providing a paradigm shift in the way medical waste is disposed in the state, enhancing capacity by showcasing global best practices for medical waste disposal and complementing the growing medical infrastructure in the state.

The NNPC/Chevron joint venture has provided professional training to personnel that will be handling the day-to-day operations of the facility and will guarantee professional and sustainable management of this very important public health facility. The project has so far provided employment for the local community during the construction phase and offers ongoing employment opportunities to sustain its operations. It is believed the facility will inspire all the stakeholders to deeply consider the impact of improperly managed medical waste on the environment, while encouraging establishment of more medical incinerators in the country.

24-hour Power Supply To Strategic Buildings, Areas In Lagos CBD Soon

Aug 17, 2010 - Having fulfilled a promise made in 2008 to electrify the outer Marina, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Tuesday said strategic buildings and areas in the Lagos Central Business District (CBD) will enjoy 24-hour electricity supply before the end of next year.

Governor Fashola, who made the disclosure Tuesday at the Stakeholders' Forum of the Lagos Central Business District at the City Hall in Central Lagos, named some of the buildings to include the Lagos General Hospital, the Lagos High Court, the Island Maternity and the City Hall as well as some streets among others.

Addressing a capacity crowd of stakeholders, including market men and women, captains of industries, prominent residents of Lagos Island, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Francisco Abosede and some other members of the State Executive Council and the Legislature, Chairmen of the two Local Government Areas in Lagos Central Business District, a representative of the Oba of Lagos and other White Cap Chiefs, among others, Governor Fashola also spoke on plans for total redevelopment of some traditional and historical sections of the city especially starting from Igan Olusi to Idumota.

Governor Fashola told the Stakeholders, "Three years ago when we met at Muson, I promised you that we would electrify the whole of Outer Marina by December 2008 and today, that promise has been fulfilled. And now, I can tell you that we are already working on a plan that will enable us supply 24-hour electricity to some strategic buildings in Lagos and I believe by this time next year when we are holding the next Stakeholders' Meeting, we would have switched on that power supply".

The Governor, however, said the ability to extend the same plan to the whole of Lagos would depend on steps being taken by the Federal Government in its on-going unbundling of the Power sector in the country adding that the State Government is monitoring the progress and is also making preparations to take advantage of the unbundling when it is eventually completed.

"While we are waiting for them, your Government has already taken the lead because when we start the generation of electricity, we still have to distribute it and we are going to need metres, we are going to need transformers, we are going to need cables, we are going to need poles", the Governor said pointing out that the present administration has already taken the lead by signing a joint venture with a world renowned Egyptian firm for the production of transformers near Badagry.

He said the State Government has plans to produce other electrical accessories such as metres, cables and others pending when the power sector reform would be completed adding that the ultimate plan was to provide an uninterrupted power supply to the whole State.

On the total redevelopment of some sections of the city, Governor Fashola who said the Local Government Chairmen on the Island are involved in the plan, said a team of architects who would carry out the redevelopment "is headed by a Lagosian who practices in New York but has come back home to begin the total redesign of some sections of the city".

Commending his immediate predecessor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for investing a colossal amount in the upgrading and revitalization of the Lagos Central Business District, the Governor declared, "Some back room economists at that time said there was concentration on the Island to the detriment of the whole State. How wrong they were; how shortsighted they were", noting that it is that same Island that millions of people head to everyday for their daily living.

"However, soon after the commissioning of the project by the immediate past Governor in May 2007, we were alarmed by the re-emergence of the old habits and attitudes which earlier destroyed the beauty of the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria", the Governor noted adding that in order to check the decay, the present administration created the Office of the Special Adviser on Central Business District.

Explaining that an investment in the Lagos CBD "is an investment for the sustenance of millions of poor people who derive their daily living from trading on the Island", Governor Fashola declared, "As a Government that flowed inexplicably and necessarily from that administration, we were determined that this investment will not be put to waste".

The Governor appealed to the Stakeholders to contribute their own quota in sustaining the beauty of the city and its further development. This, the Governor said, could be achieved if the land owners in the city could come together and pool their lands together in other to attract private sector investment in viable and qualitative real estate. As a measure to beautify the environment, Governor Fashola urged those having houses along the streets to put some coat of paint on the exterior of such houses to enhance the beauty of the city.

Pledging that his administration would make the city of Lagos and the whole State a model in Africa, Governor Fashola declared, "Trust us, believe us, we will continue to show good leadership by going the extra mile by providing a sustainable brighter rewarding future for the good people of Lagos and Lagosians".

In his goodwill message, the Chairman of Lagos West Local Government Area, Mr. Wasiu Esinlokun commended the State Government for the investments in the upgrading of the Island adding that the Local Governments on the Island would continue to do their best to maintain its beauty in partnership with the State administration.

Also in his goodwill message, a chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, commended Governor Fashola for "the wonderful work he is doing in Lagos and urged the residents to "ensure that the works continue to be wonderful".

In his goodwill message, Chairman of the House Committee on the CBD, Honourable Ayoola Ahmed noted that the glory of Lagos is back and congratulated the Governor for the accomplishments that ensured the return of the glory of Lagos.

Other people who gave goodwill messages included the Chairman of the Lagos East Local Government, representative of the Iyaloja-General of Lagos Island, Alhaja Iyabo Fagbemi who also commended the Governor for his good works and pledged the continued co-operation of the market men and women and the Managing Director of Shell who pledged that the company would continue to fulfill its Corporate Social Responsibility on the Island.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Special Adviser on the Lagos Central Business District, Honourable Oyinlomo Danmole, recalled that prior to the creation of the Office of the Special Adviser on the Lagos CBD, the transportation in the city and all other arrangements were chaotic but expressed joy that "for more than three years together we have restored some level of sanity to our dear environment in Lagos CBD".

You guys should tell him to cover those gutters!!!!!!!!! He is the best during this administration. He tried to steal an Aromire's land but failed. I will forever despise him for that but again, I will always love his work! Fashola is using think tanks and it's working for his administration. He needs to make sure he is not mortgaging the future of our people to foreign investors though!!!! That's my only concern and that aside, he is doing good not because you cats are posting crap here.

I have seen some of his secret agendas from a primary source and it has nothing to do with selfishness. My only problem is that he is not taking into full consideration the flaws of this agendas. His intentions are clear and good but they will be betrayed by the way his agendas will be executed if he doesn't edit it. Fashola will not only be the best thing to ever happen to Yorubas, but will also be the best thing to happen to Africa. One thing I'll hint you on is that, from what I saw, he is a pan Africanist not from a racist point but from a developmental point.

If the enemies of progress don't disturb his agenda, his vision for Nigeria or if a Yoruba nation emerges from it, is very very good!! Unexplainable.

Lagos converts Broad Street prisons to freedom park

THE Lagos State government has converted the former Broad Street prisons into an amphitheatre and museum to keep the memories of heroes past, says the Commissioner for Physical Planning & Urban Development, Mr. Francisco Abosede.

He told The Nation that as the nation celebrates 50 years of independence from British colonial rule, the state will use the opportunity to celebrate some of her heroes who were jailed in the prison, and also put in place a museum where the relics of the colonial masters and the nation’s rich history will be displayed for visitors - giving meaning to its re-christened name "Freedom Park."

The prison, according to him, played host to Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Herbert Macauly, a former Alake of Egba land and an uncle to the first Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Adetokunbo Ademola, among others.

Abosede said the greenery introduced in the park is also to encourage healthy living that is harmonious with nature.

The three-storey building, he said, has provision for a ramp to make movement easy for the physically challenged who may like to visit the park.

On how people can access the park due to the expected large turn-out of people, he said that circular buses will be available at TBS and tickets also for would- be tourists as there is no provision for car lots in the park.

On maintenance, he hinted that the park will be managed by a consortium to preserve and maintain the facilities in place.

Taking The Nation round the 10,000 square metre expanse land, the principal partner of Total Consult, architects to the project, Mr. Theo Lawson, said the whole idea of the new development is to remember the past by making reference to where the buildings were but adding modernity to the features.

For instance, he said that they are preserving the 52 cell blocks which measures 4 ft by 8ft while the chief warders’ yard has been converted to administration block.

The condemned prisoners cell and gallows, according to him, has been transformed while the old kitchen is now a food court hosting fast food outlets. The park will also have the bust of all the notable prisoners in it and serve as the state museum as the shovels, cutlasses, hand-chains and other relics of the prison will be on display.

He also hinted that the government may have begun moves to repatriate some of the colonial relics that found its way to the United kingdom to boost the collections in the museum which will cover the entire history of the nation. He revealed that the complex will be delivered by October 1, this year
