CHAPTER FOURTEEN


Desmond woke up with a migraine, his eyelids heavy and painful, he forcefully opened his eyes and found himself on a hospital bed, he winced and looked around as his gaze rested on a feminine figure sitting on a chair close to his bed, her head resting on the bed asleep.



"Mirabel?" He called out painfully.

"Mirabel, baby?" He called louder this time and the lady woke up and yawned.


"Jasper, you are awake, how are you feeling?" She asked rushing towards him.

"Jasper?" Desmond said confused. "Where is Mirabel?" He asked.


"Who is Mirabel?" Sandra asked.


"My wife, I need to tell her who shot me at the cliff" he coughed.


"Your wife?, You are married?" Sandra asked as her eyes watered.


"Yes, am married and I need to see my wife now" he answered trying to stand up.


"You need to rest, don't be in a haste to leave, you are not fully recovered yet" Sandra advised.


"I will rest later, my family needs to know who my killer is" he replied.


"Not so fast Desmond, we are going together to see your wife, but you have to answer a few questions first" inspector Jeff said entering the room.


"What do you want to know?" Desmond asked.


"Am inspector Jeffery Ononaku, from the divisional headquarters, Clint street off mega road" he flashed his identification card at him.


"I already know who you are, you handled the investigation during my father's death" Desmond replied.


"Oh, I didn't know you would still remember" inspector Jeff shrugged bringing out two files from the briefcase he came with. "First of all, do you remember the lady standing beside you?" He asked.


"Yea, Sandra, her father picked me at the cliff, and she brought me to the city, i owe her a lot" he smiled with difficulty.


"It's good that you remembered" Sandra smiled as a tear dropped.


"Do you remember who shot you a year ago?"


"Yes, Barrister Nathan shot me, he told me to give him the estate since it was causing problems between my brother and I, but i refused and he shot me". He replied with a sigh.


"Let's go meet your wife" inspector Jeff smiled helping him up.











Nathan and mirabel were engrossed in their discussion that they didn't hear someone knock on the door, the knock sounded heavier this time and mirabel went to get the door, it didn't take minutes before she let out a shrieking scream and ran back inside.


"What is it?, Why did you shout?" Nathan asked.


"Des..., Desss..., Dessmm" she stammered pointing at the door.

"Des what? Nathan asked.


"She is actually talking about me" Desmond replied from the door way.


"No, you should be dead, what are you doing here?" He asked with fright.


"You really think I died after you shot me?" Desmond let out a scornful laugh. "Am still alive Barrister, and you even went ahead to marry my wife, that's a wicked act" Desmond concluded.


"Am sorry Barrister Nathan, but you are under arrest for the murder of one Mr Desmond Chukwuemeka Anyadike, and for changing the will written by his father, Mr Zebulon Elochukwu Anyadike to your favour, and you even connived with Mirabel to perfect your plan" inspector Jeff said.


"Mirabel why?" Desmond asked.


"You want to know why?, This man here is the reason i got married to you, he is the one i love and not you, I got married to you because he told me to" she shouted.


"I thought you loved me?" Desmond flinched.


"I never loved you, it was a plan all from the start to kill you and blame it on Derrick, we knew he would cause trouble if he didn't get the estate, so Nathan changed the will" she scoffed.


"Please take them away" Desmond weeped.




The End

EPILOGUE



Sandra dear, you look so pretty, am sure my son won't take his eyes off you today" Mrs Zebulon smiled at her new daughter in-law, she was getting married to Desmond in few minutes time.


" Thanks Mom, you look beautiful too" Sandra replied with a smile.


"We are all set, let's go" Tracy smiled as she helped Sandra to her feet and they left for church.



AN HOUR LATER

"Mr Desmond Chukwuemeka Anyadike, do you take Sandra okoro as your lawfully wedded wife?, In truth and in death, in sickness and in health, for better for worse?" The officiating priest asked.


"Yes, I do" Desmond replied and everyone clapped their hands.

Sandra equally said her vows and it was sealed with a kiss.
