North Warns Jonathan Against Use of EFCC

THE Adamu Ciroma Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF), otherwise known  the “G15” has warned President Goodluck Jonathan against his alleged plan to use the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to hound state governors who are perceived to be opposed to his ambition to remain in office.

They posited that such attitide suggested a desperation on his part and called on all lovers of democracy to resist him.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, a former Senate President, which was made available to Saturday Tribune in Abuja on Friday, the forum counselled the president to demonstrate tolerance and desist from harassing his opponents.

The statement advised the president to enthrone a regime of tolerance of political opposition and to desist from the use of the EFCC to intimidate and harass governors and political leaders who are opposed to his attempt to subvert the zoning formula by seizing the Peoples Democratic Partys (PDP) ticket in next year’s general elections.”

It said: “the NPLF wishes to draw the attention of all Nigerians to the inherent dangers of turning the EFCC into a political gestapo of a particular candidate.

“The NPLF recalls that this is the same tactics former President Olusegun Obasanjo employed in the pursuit of his failed third term agenda.

“It is becoming clear to all that Jonathan’s candidacy for 2011 despite the PDP’s affirmation of the principle of zoning and rotation is a return of tenure elongation of President Obasanjo, which Nigerians unanimously rejected.

“The NPLF wants to make it clear that this development raises serious questions on President Jonathan’s often stated commitment to free and fair elections, and by extension the survival of the nation’s democracy.

“Sadly, it is giving President Jonathan away as a desperado, who is prepared to whip everyone into line in order to confiscate a mandate that is clearly not his.

“In as much as the NPLF is not opposed to the fight against graft, it is, however, manifest that the current onslaught against state governors and political leaders is part of the measures at checking those who not well- disposed to the ambition of President Jonathan.

“It is regrettable that we are witnessing today a throwback to the Obasanjo days and portends great danger to the credibility of the political process, nay the polity,” the statement added.

If the governors are not guilty,why the fuss from the retaarded forum?I have always said it before that nigeria is a gangster paradise,the leaders are all guilty of crimes against humanity but the only time they expose each other is when there is internal fracas among them.

The masses are the long suffering victims and they will continue to suffer as long as they keep putting up with the failed generations of ruling elites that have plagued nigeria since independence.

That is how you have folks like Akala safe from corruption accusation while folks like Amaechi are hounded just because of his political views he holds. The reactionary fight against corruption has not helped the masses but rather been an intimidatory tool for the central Government for those who do not subscribe to their politics. As we speak Jonathan himself just like these Governors have questions of corruption to answer, so they should stop wasting our time with diversionary fight against corruption.

Fighting corruption only on the eve of election is unacceptable.

There is no point campaigning against the rounding up of corrupt officials.

Those who are sponsoring anti-EFCC articles are the corrupt ones that are quaking in their boots.

On 11 September of the same year, a whopping $13.5 million was seized from Patience Jonathan herself by the agency. The investigation into these two cases are still outstanding as at this moment. Furthermore, the Council on Foreign Relations, in a report on the April 2007 elections in Bayelsa State, said that Patience Jonathan was regarded as the “greediest person in Bayelsa State.”

It is up to the First Lady to prove them wrong. She is not a member of this government, but a wife to the head of government, and so must learn to maintain the dignity that goes with her new office.

It was good enough that her husband acknowledged her in his acceptance speech. But it will be best if she recognises her limits and be conscious of what is decent. Again, Nigerians are watching Patience Jonathan.
