Generally you may call players on the left side of the midfield LW. However, 4-4-2 has been tweaked over the years and your LW in a 4-4-2 double 6 formation will never be a LW technically unless the formation will change to 4-2-4. LM has a more defensive role to play than LW. For example diamond formation of 4-4-2 will never have LW, but LM. We all remember ancelotti's formation.
