The update is only compulsory if you want to use the PlayStation Network (i.e. to play online games). The PS3 can't update by itself, it may remind you but you have do update it yourself. If you don't use PSN (and Nigerian internet is too slow to use it anyway), then you don't need to update. I have an internet connection and I haven't updated mine since.
