My maternal great grandmother grew up on the banks of the river Niger in Onitsha in the early 20th century and she told us there were definitely Igarra people there. She was also from the Igbo speaking parts of Delta North and proudly Igbo. All these divisions are not necessary. 1 Like |

I wish.. But sadly it's not true until they stop speaking igbo and bearing igbo names. That's how till today they keep blaming igbos for the coup while the man is from delta. Whenever those delta igbos commit crimes they are automatically tagged igbos while pple like you will hide and refuse to come out to say they are deltas not igbos. Be proud of your delta both in good and in bad times! Cunning humans We are not fighting, just trying to enlighten the op. I fully identify with the igbos, we are all one. When I'm with other tribes aside igbo i claim Igbo to make it simpler for them but among us internally we know ourselves. |

When I'm with other tribes aside igbo i claim Igbo to make it simpler for them but among us internally we know ourselves. You don't need to claim Igbo, simply tell them you Delta and Niger delta ethnic group or tribe......south south. I think I gave a right answer to avoid all these online fights. 2 Likes 1 Share |

And you are fully certain that everyone who has ever referred to Edo as Yoruba is igbo?? Cause that's the only thing igbos are interested in?? Igbos that haven't finished organizing their own splintered region. I wonder why an igbo man should be bothered about where Edo people are from Nearly everyone who refers to Edos as Yorubas are Igbos, and I have given the reason for that already. Check all pan-Southern Nigeria Facebook groups and you will see the names who constantly try to blackmail Edo with the Yoruba tag just because Edo seems to prove wrong their sentiment that SS/SE is a PDP enclave. In fact even here on NL you can take a look at the moniker's who argue that Edo is a SW or NC state for being controlled by APC, and judge for yourself which tribe they mostly belong to. |

It is actually because of the Yoruba history we are taught in schools which lists the Oba of Bini as one of the sons of Oduduwa. It's not a tribal thing. 1 Like |

Lzaa is only the Hausas/ yoruba who term it Igbo coup, they classify everyone from SS and SE as Igbo, as we also classify all tribes in northern Nigeria as hausa/ Fulani and west as yorubas, they even refer GEJ an ijaw man as igbo. 1 Like 1 Share |

This shows that you are not a student of history, the Edo people were already existing before the arrival of Oranmiyan. Yorubas should learn to stay on their own, stop forcing yourselves on everyone and claiming unity. If they bear same name, what proves that the names belong to Yorubas and not the Edo's,hence the Yorubas stealing our names?. 2 Likes |

It is actually because of the Yoruba history we are taught in schools which lists the Oba of Bini as one of the sons of Oduduwa. It's not a tribal thing. So Oduduwa who, according to Yoruba history, dropped from the sky and landed in Ife, later bore a son who travelled from Ife to Egypt to become the projenitor of the Binis who came from the Egyptian plains according to their own history? Aren't we supposed to be logical in our approach to historical reconstructions? If the Yoruba history you claim to have been taught in school is anything to go by, then why haven't wondered why during the times of the Old Western Region, the Yoruba chief whip in the Region's parliament would, at the opening of sessions, give salutations to the Ooni of Ife, Alafin of Oyo, Awujale of Ijebu land and leave out the Oba of Benin and then declare that he had saluted all the Yoruba traditional rulers? The fact that none of those Yoruba monarchs he mentioned ever "corrected" him to include the Oba of Benin means they themselves knew deep down in their hearts that the theory of Edo being Yoruba was a politically motivated fabrication. You rely on Yoruba "history" to determine who Edos are rather than Edo people's own history? So you found reliable and plausible the history of a people who claimed that their projenitor dropped from the sky and are even relying on whatever such mythical history says of another tribe? Yoruba history also tells us that Igbos are emigrants of Ife, so we can as well conclude that Igbos are actually Yorubas more so that a lot of Igbo words have very close spellings and pronouncuation with their Yoruba equivalents e.g. Orisha (Yoruba) and Olisah (Igbo), Ewure (Yoruba) and Ewu (Igbo), Enu (Yoruba) and Onu (Igbo), etc? |

I think Tribe is different from language bro
e.g in Yoruba tribe we have Ekiti, Ondo , Ijebu, Ijesha,Oyo e.t.c. get it right sir Yoruba is an ethnicity just like igbo, spanish or han chinese(mandarin) ,welsh, etc. Ijebu is a community in Yoruba group,Illaje is a community in Yoruba group. Andalusian is a community in Spanish group. All communities have different dialects of the same language . The official or standard version of a language is usually the most popular and widely understood dialect in the group. or if there are too many dialects or two or very similar dialects, then a unified or synthetic official version of the language would be created. in Yoruba group's case, Oyo dialect is more popular, and the official Yoruba language is based on that . In akwa cross group's case,Efik is more popular ,now ibibio is popular due to separation and larger population.there's no official language but Efik dialect is widely considered . The ethnicity listed earlier can also be classified into races . For example, Yoruba ethnicity(Nigeria) and Oromo ethnicity(Ethiopia) are classified are negroid. Spanish ethnicity is classified as Caucasoid |

Even the Oba of Benin know they are from Oranmiyan a Yoruba prince who happened to be the first king in Benin, have u ever asked yourself why many Edo bear Yoruba names ? So the mere fact that Yorubas bear English names means they are now white men or that they migrated from England to their present location, right? The mere fact that Yorubas christians bear Jewish names at the point of baptism means they are now Israelites? The adoption of names outside one's culture is the most unreliable evidence of shared culture and origin. Prior to amalgamation of Nigeria, none of the tribes which currently make up Edo State gave Yoruba names to their children. The quest for political relevance in the Yoruba dominated Old Western Region necessitated the rather myopic decision by parents of that generation to start giving Yoruba names to their children in total abandonment of their own native names. In Akoko-Edo and Etsako areas specifically, names like Saiki, Damisa, Daudu, Daniyan, Mayaki, Sanni, etc which are all Nupe names were also given to children. Does that make Edos Nupes at the same time as 'being' Yorubas for bearing Yoruba names? Mind you that due to the regrettable identity crisis which the bearing of non-native names has caused in Edo State, parents of this very generation have reverted to giving native names to newborns. |

It is actually because of the Yoruba history we are taught in schools which lists the Oba of Bini as one of the sons of Oduduwa. It's not a tribal thing. Why should Yoruba lie about that ? What benefit zdo we derive from having Edo called Yoruba? Are Yorubas bearing Edo or binis Names ? Being sibling does not necessary mean one have to work together but it doesn't deny the fact that they are related .is only fact that Edo and Yoruba are related , we need nothing from u guys |
