It's increasingly becoming difficult to determine if we are blessed or cursed.
There used to be a vibrant Country called Nigeria.

Very true.... but all 3 leaders received by the Queen were northerners... how come the Queen never received Obasanjo and Goodluck in all their years in Office? Does this establish the popular belief that the British ceded the right to rule Nigeria perpetually to the north? Things are unfolding

UK Royalty sure know how to give state visit. These are the kind of state visit and reception accorded to African leaders that made some of them stupid and agreed to the cunning conservative UK system. Some African leaders opened their treasury to them and allowed the Bretton Wood institutions to deceive them. At the end, what is the benefit of all these visits to the common man in Nigeria

When the Monarchy hosts you, they will accord you the highest respect as long as there is benefit attached to it. I remembered the way the UK Universities pampered some of us on hearing that we were on PTDF scholarship to study. Immediately after the one year scholarship expired, the honey moon stopped. Once they saw that your sponsor has paid all your fees, the service level dropped. You are on your won

UK schools no de take eye see or hear say a star or someone is coming to study on paid scholarship. Kia kia, dem go give you admission.

Good old days when Nigerian's reputation abroad was almost pristine and unblotted by herdsmen, boko haram, yahoo Yahoo, kidnapping and the ilks.

Meanwhile this picture of Prince Charles and Diana speaks volume of the silent feud in their marriage, Diana particularly might be eying her Arabian born billionaire boyfriend while prince Charles resigned himself to fate with his forlorn appearance.

If my memory serves me right the last time a Nigerian president visited that country was when a certain herdsman developed hearing problems and the Queen was like I can't coman waste my time on someone that can't hear very well from a fantastically corrupt country grin

President Ibrahim Babangida’s State Visit To Britain In 1989 (Photos, Video and Memories)

There have been 3 state visits by Nigerian heads of state to the United Kingdom. The first state visit occurred in June 1973, when General Yakubu Gowon paid a state visit, the second was in March 1981 when President Shagari visited and the last state visit was in May 1989, when General Ibrahim Babangida paid a 4-day state visit to Great Britain. The third visit is the subject of this thread.

Relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom had been poor during the administration of General Muhammadu Buhari. The Nigerian Government attempted to kidnap the former Nigerian minister of transport, Alhaji Umaru Dikko, who had been accused of corruption and whom Britain refused to extradite to Nigeria, in 1984. Britain subsequently detained a Nigerian Airways plane at Stanstead Airport and Nigeria detained a British Caledonian Airways plane at the Murtala Muhammad Airport in Lagos. The standoff lasted for 2 days. These incidents greatly damaged relations between the British Government and the administration of Major General Muhammadu Buhari.

Relations greatly improved when General Ibrahim Babangida took over. The British company, Vickers-Armstrong, developed a main battle tank that they hoped to sell to the British Army. The tank was called the Vickers MK3. However, the British Army chose to go with the Challenger Tank Project and the British Government of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was assisting Vickers to search for buyers. Nigeria was one of the biggest buyers of the tank. Over 136 Vickers MK Eagle tanks were delivered to Nigeria between 1985 and 1995, in a deal that was struck between Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and President Ibrahim Babangida.

Mrs Thatcher visited Nigeria in January 1988. Students of the University of Ife and members of the Nigerian Labour Congress protested during her visit because Mrs Thatcher had called Nelson Mandela a terrorist, because she was close to Pieter Botha (the hated prime minister of South Africa) and also because of her support for IMF policies in Nigeria.

President Ibrahim Babangida paid a state visit to Britain in 1989 and Mrs Thatcher paid a stopover visit to Lagos in March of that same year. Prince Philip also visited Nigeria that year and he laid the foundation stone of the Muson Centre in Onikan during the visit.

Finally, Prince Charles and Princess Diana visited Nigeria in 1990 (you can see my thread about the Prince and Princess’ visit here https://www.nairaland.com/2424327/prince-charles-princess-diana-nigeria ).

The pictures on this thread are from Gregnwoko.com (http://www.gregnwoko.com/1989-05-09-diana-greets-president-ibrahim-babangida-of-nigeria-at-victoria-station-while-the-queen-looks-on/), Alamy pictures (https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-politics-state-visit-to-britain-president-babangida-buckingham-palace-107845465.html), Getty Images and Shutterstock.
Rubbish, Babangida is a mare tool in the hand of imperialists' collectively engineered; lack of progress, underdevelopment, corruption, misery, poverty, nepotism....list is endless. Babangida is a waste to all generations of Nigeria. He has made all the collective efforts of our past leader to be in vain. We are all in slavery, penury and misery as compatriots', because of this evil man who called himself a genius. The end they say will justify the means. Yoruba has to forge a new approach to move away from this unending negative narrative otherwise, our children will never forgive us as Nigeria has proven to be a hopeless country.

Please accept my guidance in good faith.

"the whites" as used rather so often in these parts is considered racist in more conscious societies. "The West" is a more appropriate term which best represent the idea you intended to pass.

Also, some of us who actually lived through the period highlighted in this article know that the West had no added respect for Nigeria in the 80's than they do now. All you see above is how the cold war era politics was played by all. I will recommend that you google about special hosting like this granted by the super powers to more despotic African rulers in that era.

Why won't they welcome and be smiling with him?
This was one of the major points when they completely sold and compromised NIGERIA and NIGERIA's future.
IBB was the poster boy for the West to implement deplorable economic policies to totally devalue our naira in favour of their currencies,
destroy every fragment of manufacturing and enterprise to facilitate the invasion of NIGERIA with their manufactured goods.. all in exchange for perpetuation of IBB's dictatorial vice-like grip on the reigns of power. Mobutu Sese Seko was another one.. single handedly destroyed Congo (Zaire then).
Those imperialists are cursed. Any African leader you see smiling with them has sold you. The ones that resolutely and uncompromisingly stand for their own are blacklisted on CNN, BBC and all their other organs of propaganda and taken out using sponsored uprisings or coups or assassinations. Thomas Sankara, Patrice Lumumba, Murtala Muhammed etc readily come to mind.

Which going was good? Sorry to ask this, how old are you? This is the most fraudulent head of state Nigeria ever had. Nigeria just survived Shagari austerity measures and Buhari/Idiagbon. Then this evil genius as he allegedly referred to himself added structural adjustment to it. Large scale exodus of Nigerians commenced just few years after from around the late 80s into the 90s. From the 419 and drug dealers took over the streets and airwaves. Go ask KWAM 1. This guy allegedly stole over $12 billion oil revenues gains due to Gulf War. Forget respect from White people, you don't need that. Respect from your own is more important. They only care about what to gain from you and they sold IBB the idea of structural adjustment and IMF loan.

IBB was a very good looking man in his younger days, in addition the love of his life late maryam. Heard two of them were quite a pair.
Then Nigeria was respected because she had a promising future. But that future is turning to nightmare.
Only divine intervention will save this Nation. Sometimes I weep deeply in my heart for this Nation. Worst of all, we have a younger generation that is totally clueless. That's the very sad part.

I believe the future hope for Nigeria are those kids in junior secondary down to the unborn generation. But as for the matured once, they have been corrupted and defiled.
