Private enterprises always do it better.
Asnafsaeed:
The multi-billion High–Tech Greenhouse Farm established by Dangote Farms Limited, geared at boosting the cultivation of high-quality tomatoes in the country, has commenced full production in the commercial city of Kano.

The farm which is fully automated is the first of its kind in West Africa and is expected to transform the economy of the local tomato farmers, as the technology is expected to up their harvest from the current 10 tons per acre to as much as 40 tons.

Abdulkarim Kaita, managing director of the Dangote Tomatoes Company Processing Limited, confirmed this, on Thursday, during the visit of senior officials of the Kano Office of Central Bank of Nigeria to the farm.

Speaking to BusinessDay on the sidelines of the visit, Kaita disclosed that his company `s new investment in the farm is motivated by the quest to help Nigeria stop the over $350 million that is expended on the importation of fresh and processed tomatoes yearly.

He said his company had so far, injected over #3 billion in the development of the farm, which in the next three weeks, is expected to deliver high-quality tomato seedlings to tomato farmers across the 12 states of the Federation where the commodity is heavily cultivated.

“The management of the Dangote Farms, which is a subsidiary of Dangote Tomatoes Company Processing Limited is excited to reveal the tremendous effort that we are making to ensure that Nigeria becomes self –sufficient in tomato production.

“The planting medium you are looking at is called PAT MOOSE which has the capacity of producing 350 million seedlings per season that can be used to plant an estimate 12,000 hectares of tomato farm.

“We are glad to disclose that we are the first to bring this new technology into the country and this is going to fast track the yield of our tomato farmers tremendously.

“The project is being executed under the CBN `s Tomato Anchor-Borrowers Programme. The CBN will be paying for the seedling that we cultivating, and it will be distributed to farmers.

“The PAT MOOSE process you are seeing takes 3 weeks, after which it goes to the next stage, and the whole process of growing the tomato takes just three months” he explained.

Giving further insight into the value addition which the Greenhouse farm would provide, Kaita, noted that the introduction of the technology will put an end to post-harvest losses, as well as increase the volume of the harvest of the commodity.

In the same vein, he added that the introduction of the technology would lead to the expansion of production of the commodity, beyond the over 2.5 million tons of current consumer demand.

“Based on the study under the GEMS project, Nigeria has 171,000 hectares of land for tomato production, and if you multiply this with it the over 40 tons which the technology is capable of producing per hectare that means can grow our production to around 8 million tons.

“With this in the next two years, if Government effects the ban of the importation of commodity, just as it has been done in the case of rice, Nigeria will soon become a net exporter of the commodity.

Nigeria is one of the few Nations that comes closest to the idea "Paved with gold", unfortunately too many are blind to the opportunities. There is everything to do in Nigeria and the people to buy. You name it, do it in Nigeria with dedication, perseverance and a little effort and you'll make money. Dangote could clean up in Nigeria and become the richest man in the world. Sometimes I get the impression he holds back because of accusations of monopoly, government influence and such.

I think his edge now is in building for long term and wanting to create a dynasty. The majority of Nigerians with relative capability to him build for short-term profit, they create, make mony and let things fall apart and close. We need Nigerians that will create businesses that continue to grow and turn over a 100 years from now.

this man is just getting richer

Not about money anymore for Dangote. He has stated explicitly that he is not into flashy cars and material wealth. An admirable man who is now Nigeria's Bill Gates. Works with Gates actually on charity projects many do not know about.

https://www.africanews.com/2019/10/03/here-s-why-bill-gates-and-nigeria-s-dangote-have-a-fruitful-partnership//

In 2016, the Dangote Foundation and Gates Foundation entered into a partnership worth $100 million to reduce malnutrition in Nigeria.

‘‘One of the greatest factors that undermine progress is malnutrition. A lot of kids don’t have access to sufficient and nutritious food,’‘ Dangote said at this year’s Goalkeepers event.

‘‘One of the ways our foundations are working together to fight malnutrition is through food fortification…by adding micronutrients to the food that families, especially those from low-income households, are purchasing every day,’‘ Gates explained.

Malnutrition is responsible for nearly half of all deaths in children under 5, and both entrepreneurs believe that tackling it in Nigeria could unlock progress for the entire continent.

‘‘Aliko Dangote understands this, and that’s why he’s committed to making progress in his home country. Melinda and I are lucky to have him as a partner (and friend!) in improving health,’‘ Gates said of Dangote’s commitment.

Asked what they had learnt about each other in the years of their friendship at the Goalkeepers event, Africa’s richest man described Gates as a ‘very simple, soft-spoken and kind-hearted person’.

‘‘Meeting Bill made me a totally different person. To think that here is someone who has nothing to do with us in Nigeria or the African continent, and yet he is putting his money, his soul, everything…he is very, very committed to helping humanity,’‘ Dangote said.

Dangote added that he had been inspired by Gates to give away significant portions of his wealth to charity.

‘‘Aliko really knows people. He has relationships, he is willing to reach out to people. His ability to reach out, and the communication skills that Aliko has developed, have really been phenomenal,’‘ Gates said of his friend and partner.

True. So myopic they think they can take their money, Gucci suit, Bentley and Range Rover with them when they die. When millions of Nigerians live in poverty, how can Nigerian multi-billionaires justify keeping massive wealth in their banks they cannot exhaust in 20 lifetimes yet same money sitting idly can transform the lives of thousands of their fellow men and women today and right now to give us all a better Country?

Not good. There is open land.... why green house? Besides... this can be Dangote eventually controlling tomatoes in the country. Would the tomatoes be organic/ modified? If modified... and he is distributing seeds.... then the farmers would have to be returning to him for seeds at whatever charge he wants since the seeds retained from the fruits cannot germinate. In essence...he would be controlling the food chain. Then it comes to exporting 5o Europe... where our farmers would be affected since Europe is likely to ban GNO tomatoes.

Open land does not provide continuous supply of tomatoes for the factory. Usage of open land made the plant shut down due to a lacuna in the supply of tomatoes. Although, it might be unethical for Dangote to control the tomatoes' market in the country, but that is the beauty of capitalism. Anyone who does not want him to control the market should go into the production of tomatoes using home grown tomatoes. Regarding the seeds, well, the EU has always been anti-science (esp on agriculture), so there is no point exporting those tomatoes to the EU. Already, Italy can serve EU's consumption. Besides, with the population decline, that is not a future market. The market is in Asia and Africa of which both continents understand the benefits of GM technology. India, Kenya, Nigeria, China, Japan, Vietnam etc are good examples.

Dangote doesn't grow food for them in the North, they grow food on their own.
Good fertile soil in the south, abundant rainfall, better technologies. And yet if the North stop bringing food for just three days, everyone realises that "the vast majority of Nigerian's economy" you're talking about is useless. What is the essence of our existence or the oil we have or business we have if we can't feed ourselves for just one week?

There is nothing wrong with GM tomatoes. And you cannot build a multi billion naira factory to depend on "organic tomatoes". Heck, "organic farming" cannot feed Nigeria and certainly not with the ballooning population.

GM tomatoes are also "natural" (whatever this means to you).

I don't think Dangote is into rice production and even if he is, certainly not a monopoliser. Olam Nigeria, one of the nation's largest producers of rice does not even monopolise the market. Yet again, if you believe he is a monopolist, no one stops anyone from delving into rice production.

It is the free market.

Dangote monopolized the cement industry when a bag was sold @ #1400 and imported cements stopped coming into the country. Today its #2500/bag and over 75% of the raw materials are here in country. And he equally exports to other African nations. He took over sugar, salt and most consumables yet Nigerians pay through their nose to consume all these items. Taking over the tomatoes market with the help of CBN wouldn't favour the citizens in any way because in the long run Nigerians will buy tomatoes @ a higher price compared to what we have today. He's just a business man maximizing profit with the aid of Federal government. It's not in favour of the masses at all.

[b] Dangote monopolized the cement industry when a bag was sold @ #1400 and imported cements stopped coming into the country. Today its #2500/bag and over 75% of the raw materials are here in country.

You don't grow economy through heavy importation. Did he prevent other Nigerian millionaires from venturing into cement production? As long as he doesn't have power to do that, you can't accuse him of anything. This is what FG is trying to force us to do, to start manufacturing and producing. Tell all those politicians, military men and senior civil servants to invest their loot in manufacturing sector, agric sector, oil and gas, they should stop wasting their money on real estates. Buying a single house at a cost of 500 million or 1 billion naira is nothing but pure madness! Dangote would never make that kind of investment.

And he equally exports to other African nations. He took over sugar, salt and most consumables yet Nigerians pay through their nose to consume all these items.

Who were the people producing all these items before? No be importation mostly? This country has population of about 200 million people, do you think Dangote alone is enough for us? Think again. When other rich people are not ready or interested in giving us competition, you can't accuse the only person who is serious of being monopolistic

Taking over the tomatoes market with the help of CBN wouldn't favour the citizens in any way because in the long run Nigerians will buy tomatoes @ a higher price compared to what we have today.

Were you aware that he has tomato paste producing factory? That factory was opened and closed twice in the past due to the lack of supply of raw tomatoes. Nobody showed interest in going into the large scale tomato farming to feed Dangote factory. Would you have preferred him to let his investment become a waste? The man now takes it upon himself to look for a way to create tomatoes farmers for his company and Nigeria at large, you are reading conspiracy theory.
That's what he did with his sugar company. He assisted the sugarcane farmers to ensure supply of raw materials for his sugar company. My friend, Dangote's level of business skills and determination is out of any other Nigerian reach.

He's just a business man maximizing profit with the aid of Federal government. It's not in favour of the masses at all.

Of course, he's capitalist. What are you? What are my? Is this not the type of economy we're operating? I can't remember the last time he said that he was going to be the father of the nation feeding you and me.

Concerning the FG. FG and CBN would supports any serious industrialist who meant business. Did you see that arrangement?
