Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by kdships(m): 10:39am On May 26, 2007
The NYSC programme was a welcome development when it was introduced in 1973. Nigeria was still young and things were very much different as it is today. The Nigerian youth of today still needs the NYSC but not with the same old arrangement. My opinion? I think it should be restructured and the first thing to look into should be the duration of the programme. That should be reduced to four months. A lot more should also be looked into and I believe by the time this is done, more people will begin to appreciate it. At the moment, it's a total waste of time and resources.

It's so painful that people still think they hould scrap N.YS.C. In my own opinion people who thinks that way should not go unpunished, they are the kind of people that lacks deep thinking. Will you say they should scrap Universities all because of the evil it's causing? Or will you think of stopping school because you failed just a course? The truth is this, people abuse priviledges no matter the condition they are,so for the mere fact that some youths have turned it to a time of messing around,it doesn't mean that some are still not decent and getting ahead and doing great things. Nigerian Government is known for , so dn't even talk about the government, it's not an excuse. Anyway i think it depends on individual, service year should be a time whereby you are winned from your parents. It's a time to think and start life in a unique way,it's full of experiences which makes one to think to become better in life. It's a time of putting your potentials to work. Forget about the pains,it's a time to set your standard in life. So guys think on these,

The NYSC may have caused some to have nasty experiences, myself included .I spent one year in one of the most interior villages in Imo state.
That said, believe it or not Universty education in Nigeria was virtually free so all graduates owed the country a duty of service. One may argue that fees are now high, but I know a lot of people whose exposure to career opportunities was greatly helped by serving outside their known environments.
My time in camp was very enjoyable but the service year was very stressful for me.I had lived all my life in the city and only went to the villages for burials etc. But my one year in the village exposed me to how the majority of Nigerians live.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by chessito(m): 12:58pm On May 26, 2007
the truth is that if not for service year you won't experience those things you experienced in the village, life should not just be lived only in the city but also in the village so that one can be a complete human. .
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by samsilo(m): 1:03pm On May 26, 2007
Exactly my point,I now live in London. If I did not serve I would be like some ignorant people who having lived in Lagos or PH all their lives do not know how most Nigerians live
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by chessito(m): 1:15pm On May 26, 2007
keep that up, and i think all what you've learnt is really helping you even in how you go about life, sure it must help, life is not a bed of roses and when you don't experience certain life and see how people are suffering it may not make you to rethink. also it's fun leaving with all those local people at times, most especially when you are really making them to feel big as we know that a big man is someone who makes us feel big when we are with him and not someone who makes us feel tiny!
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by chinnys(f): 2:05pm On May 26, 2007
For me NYSC should not be scraped!!!
It makes people see life from other perspectives
Infact i can't wait to do mine!!!!!
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by thebaron(m): 2:10pm On May 26, 2007
I dont think anybody needs the NYSC programme to know that life is difficult or the fact that there are people living in very severe conditions in this Nigeria. I think there must be something wrong with someone who is depending on this programme to be weaned from their parents. Immediately I finished school I started working on my dream. I registered my own company and started moving. Life here on earth is too short for us to waste a whole year.
If u have a dream then you will know that the whole NYSC thing is a complete waste of time.
For those of you supporting this whole scam please tell me what you have learnt that has made a positive impact in your life? you dont need NYSC to mix with people of a different background. U dont need it to go to the Northern part of the country or to visit a remote village in the east. You can do all these things by yourself. If you have to wait for NYSC to do all of that then there is something wrong with you. You are obviously not ready for life.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by thebaron(m): 2:25pm On May 26, 2007
so u believe one has to live in the village to be a complete human being. My God! u are very shallow. How ccan u say something like that.
samsilo:I live in Ph and I am not ignorant. I travel a lot and I still intend to travel some more. because that is how we learn. I did not need the NYSC to travel to the places I travelled to.
Please if u do not know what to say stay off this thread.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by pek(m): 2:48pm On May 26, 2007
before i go into details, i would want you to reflect on th ideals of the nysc.for the records,i finished my youth servive just last year.severd in nasarawa state and without any pretence or exaggeration, happens to be one of my best years.i schooled in the west and i am from the east, born and bred in the north so can call me atrue nigerian as i have travelled extensively.one thing i notice about people from the west is that they hardly travel outside their area.this is one of the gains of nysc.in this period of unemployment,do you know people get jobs in where they serve.for most, that is their first time of being independent and a means of making money.it is during that period that you know what it is to be a man of responsibility.most of the things i use now are what i aquired during my service.in all, the advantages far outweighs the few disadvantages.i believe it is one of the best things that have happened to the nigerian youth.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by chessito(m): 2:55pm On May 26, 2007
thats very brilliant of you!
you must be the most shallow human being, to start with, did you serve at all? i doubt it, if you did maybe you yourself made it a point of duty to waste your time, so thats why you can't really see far into what we are talking about,
thebaron:how many times have you gone to the remote areas to live for 2 months? so i see you as one of those that doesnt know what he's talking about!
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by samsilo(m): 3:19pm On May 26, 2007
@thebaron,Nairaland will always have its share of rude and uncultured like you.
If you read my first post did I not say I used to go to th village but never spent time there. I have been to most of Nigeria except the North East and North west(about 9 states).Like many people I met during service I felt like running away at first but I tell you I enjoyed ,learnt from the experience, made a lot of friends and came out a better person.
I was also able to provide a very useful service in that village as I worked in the hospital then.
Life is not all about your own selfish interest.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by thebaron(m): 3:27pm On May 26, 2007
U r entitled to your opinion. For ur information I did not serve cos I did not see the purpose for it. It'll be a complete waste of my time. Besides I hav a business to run. I hav been to many remote places in Nigeria and I did not need the NYSC programme to do that. I feel sorry for someone who needs the Government to do something as fundamental as travelling to other places to meet different cultures.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by thebaron(m): 3:29pm On May 26, 2007
who is talking about selfish interests. please!
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by thebaron(m): 3:37pm On May 26, 2007
hey I must say that I am happy for u. I am not against service. no far be it from me. but I still maintain that it is a waste of time. It is true that people from the south-western part of the country do not travel out of their vicinity and it is very bad. It reflects in the way they relate to people from other parts of the country.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by chessito(m): 3:59pm On May 26, 2007
i now see the reason why you are bent on that unfair judgement, you never experienced it, you see you are not even supposed to talk because you don't know what it is all about, you are not qualified to talk.ok? so pls try and keep quiet.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by thebaron(m): 4:02pm On May 26, 2007
Do you have to put ur finger into fire to know that it burns. Men! u r so lame!
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by chessito(m): 4:28pm On May 26, 2007
i wonder who taught you? don't you know you won't know the intensity of the fire and how the pain is until you actually put your finger on fire? be practical ok? someone who has not experienced failure in life cannot actually console a failure.so you are not the best person to raise your voice that they should scrap NYSC. Y ou don't qualify for it.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by DOLLYGIRL: 5:39pm On May 26, 2007
hey hey hey guys, just calm down. This is not a face off thread. I think NYSC should continue because it is one program that brings Nigerian youths together. I am from the North, I grew up in the North and schooled in the South-West and served in the South-South. Believe me it was one hell of a year. All I can say is that the Govt. should reform the whole program just like it was in the old when companies will be at the camp waiting for graduates to be employed in their companies.
These days its not so. Instead of being gainfully employed after the program, all you see is hargard looking youths roaming the streets with tattered shirts, filed shoes and worn out files searching for demeaning jobs. I was lucky to be retained after service and Glory be to God I am well paid and living well. All KUDOS to NYSC Program. It should not be scraped but be reformed instead.
Peace to y'all.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by olawa20(m): 6:21pm On May 26, 2007
the nysc can be a very enriching time, especially if you've made up your mind before you set out that you're going to make it a worthwhile experience. I hd a very good experience. Just like said earlier myths about other ethnic group were changed, had the opportunity of meeting lot of people and visiting and living in places i would otherwise not have known existed.
but you can also effectively argue that the program is not effectively meeting the set objective of national integration. so you can argue for a reform of the exercise. for instance, nowadays, a lot of people influence their posting in order to remain very close to home, thereby defeating the objective of the exercise
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by hartman(m): 6:53pm On May 26, 2007
ref: scraping of NYSC
Do u no y i think it should not be scraped? it made some people to leave their home town
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by picoba(m): 7:57pm On May 26, 2007
Remember, this is a program that is well designed in order to promote unity in Nigeria.
Following the lay down constitutions, it has been abused beyond reasonable doubt.
What we should be expecting in the sector is reformation.
It is a very good programme. What you are seen now, is the dividend of Corruption and all the rest that affecting this Nation.
If we are agitating that NYSC prgramme is a waste of time. What about the University or Polytechnics are they not. Imagine a student that meant to spend 4 or 5 years in a University and end up spending 5 to 6 years or more without any achievement. (I mean no skills or knowledge). This is just a simple illustration we have several of them.
I want us to stop looking into a subset of a whole in passing judgment, rather study the whole before passing comment.
The so call NYSC staff, most of them are very corrupt. They cannot interpret why NYSC was instituted.
So I want you to get it right is not the Programme, but the entire system. "NYSC is a wast of Time" if yes. Then we can as well saying, schooling in Nigeria is a wast of time and as well leaving in Nigeria.
Anything you want to do whatsoever, there must be a pre-define goal. I'm going for this programme what I my going to achieve? How can I achieve them? Of what importance are they? Will it benefit me in the nearest future?
I want to tell you there are a lot of things to gain during service year, it only depend on the way it appear to you. All you need to do is to reschedule your programme. Ir respect or place you are posted to.
During my own time I was posted to a city, but mind you most of corps member are being used as a ceremonial coper.
In your area of interest, I mean your profession, have you acquired skills that can make you somebody in life. Think of it. The only thing we get in most of our school here in Nigeria is Knowledge, if you are the type that wait to take it while in school.
There are a lot.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by nuzo(m): 8:23pm On May 26, 2007
When my family persuaded me to go for the programme, i thought they were begining to hate me. I really thought otherwise after two months into the programme.
Before, i used to think that i know much; but after the programme, i found out that 40% of what i knew from childhood, i learnt it during my one year NYSC programme.
One of the major things i learnt in NYSC was tolerance and respecting other peoples' views( not necessarilly agreeing): it's really helping me out today.
NYSC has its disadvantages. The govt. should work more on that( salary and accomodation).
It's ok if some people want it scapped, its their own view.
But one thing is sure in most of these posters; they have not experienced it.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by chessito(m): 8:24pm On May 26, 2007
@picoba and olawa
thanks so much! i feel you!
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by chessito(m): 8:36pm On May 26, 2007
thanks alot, you see the reason why some people wants it scrap is either because they have never experienced it and are basing their judgement on hearsay or because some that experienced it were NFA, didnt really go to do something tremendous, they went on the platform of wanting to escape from their different homes so they can have their freedom to mess around, and some just could not sit down to get something doing.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by ferdimako1: 9:15pm On May 26, 2007
@ Chessito, Please check your verb-noun agreement. The way you write (I know spell check doesn't do that aspect) people will be doubting whether you're a graduate. Or are u one of those that start from yr1 to think about NYSC instead of doing well in their majors?
The Govt. of the blind is blindfolding people of poor background for one full yr. It's happening because these poor people don't have any other plans for themselves. Do Nigerians abroad do this service thing? When they come back companies will be tracking them. Where are we? I heard banks pitched tents in Benue State the other day to allure new lawmakers (lawbreakers) to open accounts with them huh. Do you get my drift? The poor is always in the rich people's plan. Can u blame them? Experiences of free shaggings and stipends.
One doesn't wait for even his parents to tell one what to do after graduation. This is a farce but keep sleeping-with.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by Nite Angel(m): 9:20pm On May 26, 2007
I don't think so. There are so many benefits which I'll return later to fill you in on. But, I really wish that instead of bloody recruits shoving us around - which points to legalising the military and giving them a higher ranking than graduates - it would be better to have educated trainers come on board.
I benefitted immensely from the service year experience.
Re: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by adewaleafolabi(m): 10:39pm On May 26, 2007
hmm about the soldiers am quite used to them shoving me around i spent six years in a military school which groomed me up in the art of survival, escape from those punishments, tactical thinking etc i didn't have to do NYSC to know all these. Nysc is a great programm but it lacks coordination. i feel it should be scrapped and save people time and energy. Nigeria of today doesn't appeal for one to serve it

NYSC is an utter & complete waste of time!
Wanna waste a year of your life??

To the people who say it was anything other than a waste of time- what the hell were you doing before?
