Keep doing ur 30k BMC job.

There's a seaport in warri, calabar, Rivers, they should be reactivated fully, there's no need for promising us an audio seaport

supported..... International xperts says that Calabar seaport will cost about 231million dollars to renovate and upgrade it.
That 800million will renovate and upgrade both calabar and warri seaports.

And the remaining 340 million dollars will reactivate Okrika, Onitsha and complete Benue River Port.

Lagos will decongest automatically

They should not.
Creating a seaport in Warri is reawakening the restiveness in that region.

A seaport will fester the growth of Piracy on the Niger Delta Waterways.
The FG should use that money to build amusement parks instead.

Abi oh! Build amusement parks so they can amuse themselves and drown their sorrows in locally brewed hot drink!

Please tell me you’re being sarcastic!

Others may argue that building job creating industries will have the opposite effect and actively engage the youths who may otherwise have engaged in the piracy of which you speak!

The federal government is set to build a new Sea Port, estimated to cost $800 million in Pessu area of Warri in Delta state.

Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon Rotimi Amaechi disclosed this Thursday, at the Petroleum Training Institute Conference Centre, in Uvwie council area of Delta state.

Amaechi who was in company of the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN) and Director-General, National Directorate of Employment, Dr. Nasiru Ladan Argungu tasked youths of the area to support the forthcoming project.

The trio were in the state to present starter packs, micro enterprise enhancement loans and resettlement packages to 1,700 women and youths under the National Directorate of Employment empowerment programme.

While urging youths to ensure the project goes on smoothly when it takes off Amaechi revealed further that a similar Sea Port will be built in Bonny, Bonny local government area of Rivers state

“We are building a brand new Sea Port in Pessu. It will cost 800 million dollars. When you stop them from working you are losing such a huge investment where the entire community can be contractors, some can supply sand.

“There is also the Bonny sea Port that is coming. The best thing to do is allow the development. Imagine the companies that have left Warri, let the Sea Port project go on smoothly,” the minister appealed.

On his part, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr. Keyamo reassured of the federal government’s commitment to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

He added that with what is being given in this early stage of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, Deltans should expect more, in terms of empowerment, to come in the next few years.

Some items given to the beneficiaries drawn from the 25 LGAs in the state include sewing machines, knitting machines, welding machines and cash sums.

Why not use this huge amount to modernize the existing ports in the state? Delta state already have about four ports that have been abandoned for years now due to federal politics. Is this not another opportunity for amaechi to loot public funds as usual?

Many of you just "throw words" and leave out logic

1. Is there enough business to sustain the ports? you ask. I wonder if you're oblivious to the clamour for Lagos ports to be de-congested? So there must be enough business in Warri before FG-driven port project must come to Warri? Even if other proximal regions have overwhelming business activites that requires accessibility to ports? to you No! they must all wait for Warri to have enoush buiness.

I am aware of the clamour to have the ports decongested. I did mention other ports were also planned in other parts of the country. I never said that another port wasn't necessary. My main point was that there seemed to be an overbuilding of ports. Worse, Nigerian exports are not growing at a space that will see the full utilisation of these ports. Are they potential white elephants?

Nigeria's international trade isn't growing at impressive rates. If international trade doubled in the next 8 years, that will be the magic. I don't see it happening with this government (and even past government) not having a clue to what will bring a boom in non-oil exports, coupled with the protectionism that discourages imports.

2. Multiple exchange rates? Na today? Care to explain to me what govt can do in this regard.

.

I am not the first critic of multiple exchange rates. Buhari is the major harbinger of multiple exchange rates and it is one of the main reasons the economy is growing poorly.

There's presently 5 exchange rates but I shall only focus on 2. Before I even focus on 2.

I copied part of an article online from Deloitte . This was from a 2017 online report. Please click on the 2 links to read more. I am not in a writing mood.

According to the Circular, the new window which takes effect from 24 April 2017, is tagged the "Investors' & Exporters' Foreign Exchange Window" (the Window) with the objective of boosting liquidity in the FX market and ensuring timely execution and settlement of eligible transactions.

http://blog.deloitte.com.ng/cbn-introduces-special-foreign-exchange-window-investors-exporters/?utm_source=Mondaq&utm_medium=syndication&utm_campaign=View-Original

https://www.theafricareport.com/12170/nigerias-dual-exchange-rate-system-may-be-ending/

Dual exchange rates are open to abuse. Abuse usual involves around round-tripping where someone buys forex at the cheaper rate of N305 and sells it N360 on the exporters' window. Lamido Sanusi has long been a thorn in the flesh of the Buhari administration where he stridently condemned Buhari's whacky forex policies. They plunged the economy into an extremely severe recession and it was only when the new window was created that the severe forex shortages which Buhari's exchange policies engineered, which starved companies of forex to run their businesses, finally came to an end. It was the severe forex scarcity that led to the closure of many companies and the sacking of millions. His forex policies were only a little better than asking the CBN to print money so that there'll be money in circulation. Thank God he didn't do that

3. Boarder closure? Bros, sharrap dia!. So the government will be deemed Pro-Business when it overlooks the fraudulent activities of smuggling, disregard of trade agreements by neighboring countries at the expense of Nigeria, killing of local manufacturers and agri-preneurs?

The worse thing than a wrong policy is for it either to be enforced or supported by people.

The first question you should ask yourself whether these policies are good in the first place. If they are good, support them. Simply saying policy is good because that is the law is wrong.

Is Nigeria really respecting Trade Agreements? No. CET, which Nigeria is part of states import duty on finished goods entering the country from outside ECOWAS member states should attract an import duty of 20%. Nigeria has severally disregarded this and gone as far as even banning products such as rice. Nigeria is actually not adhering to trade agreements. Many other West African countries condemn the government's protectionist policies which have failed to industrialize the country

There is nothing wrong with imports. It is simply giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it. They are actually good for you. What is wrong is when you have an overvalued exchange rate that encourages imports and discourages exports and eats up the foreign reserves.

Protectionism encourages countries to focus on goods they suck at, on products that are not the country's calling. Nigeria has no problem at all with actual production of rice. It has none whatsoever. The nation can even produce enough rice to feed Africa. It, however, has no comparative advantage in rice production and that has been the crux of the matter. It is cheaper to import rice than to grow it locally. That is why it is so profitable to purchase rice in Benin Republic, take it all the way to Niger Republic and still make a profit smuggling it into Nigeria. It is ridiculous. It is like telling a very fat boy to compete in sprint sports. He can compete. He can cross the finishing line. I'm sure you'll never put your money on him. Perhaps if there was a bet on who will come last. That is not his calling.

The government should instead reduce the import duty on rice to 20% or even less. This will make Benin and other countries unattractive to smugglers and the commodity will now be coming in legally and the government can earn revenues through import duties. The government should instead pour money and incentives for areas the country excels at. It is reputed that Nigeria can earn as much as $2bn from the export of shea butter. Snails can earn as much as $1bn. Thailand generates as much as $1.8bn from exports of farmed shrimps for instance. We are yet to discuss cashew nuts, honey, moringa and many other products.

4. Your Special Economic Zones suggestion had been in the works by many govts including the current, so tell us what we don't know.....

SEZ's are expected to bring transformative change. They have not achieved the impact they were supposed except perhaps that at Bonny. Far more efforts should be put into them to transform the industrial landscape of the country. The SEZ helped to transform China.
