Petrol subsidy increases by 2,000% in one year by fergie001: 10:36am On Dec 01, 2019
The amount spent as subsidy on petrol increased from N2.87bn in November 2018 to about N60.37bn in November 2019, representing an increase of 2,001 per cent.

An analysis of the amount spent on petrol subsidy in November this year showed that every litre of the product consumed in Nigeria was subsidised by an average of about N36.59 by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. The NNPC is currently the sole importer of the petrol.

Figures contained in selected petrol pricing templates obtained from the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency in Abuja on Friday showed that petrol subsidies on November 15, 18, 21 and 26 were N30.4, N30.79, N45.64 and N39.53 respectively.

The differences between the Expected Open Market Price and the ex-depot cost for petrol collection gave rise to the actual amount spent as subsidy daily by the NNPC.

An average of the available subsidy figures provided by the PPPRA in November 2019 showed that the national oil firm spent about N36.59 on every litre of petrol in the month under review.

The NNPC, on several occasions, had stated that Nigeria consumed between 55 million and 60 million litres of petrol daily.

In its most recent financial and operations report, for instance, the corporation said a total of 55.74 million litres of petrol was consumed across the country on a daily basis.

Going by a daily consumption of 55 million litres and an average of N36.59 subsidy, which the corporation incurred in November on every litre, it therefore implies that the national oil firm spent about N60.37bn on petrol subsidy during the 30 days of November.

The corporation subsidises petrol to ensure that it is not sold above N145 per litre at filling stations across the country.

The NNPC, however, classifies its subsidy spending as under-recovery, as it has repeatedly argued that only the National Assembly could approve subsidy.

Under-recovery is the additional cost that the NNPC is incurring in subsidising the price of petrol in order to ensure that it is sold at the regulated price, even when the real market price is above this regulated rate.

A further analysis of the NNPC’s financial and operations reports for August 2018 and July 2019 showed how subsidy spending by the national oil firm had been fluctuating over time.

A comparison of subsidy spending by the corporation showed that in January, February, March and April 2018, it spent N45.78bn, N59.52bn, N34.03bn and N77.91bn, respectively.

But in January, February, March and April this year, the NNPC incurred N104.35bn, N102.24bn, N30.64bn and N89.19bn as petrol subsidies.

Industry operators told our correspondent that the fluctuation in the amount spent was due to global crude price instability, as this affected the cost of refined petroleum products.

Okay.

But if prices of imported petroleum products must be regulated, government intervention to cushion the effects of increased prices is inevitable, hence the subsidy. Without subsidy, the prices will soar.

Las las, nothing for online trolls. grin

This subsidy regime should be about the messiest corruption cesspit and the biggest drain on our finance as a nation. We are practically throwing billions into the drain and, of course, creating an avenue for greedy folks to pocket large chunks of our national earnings.

The hypocrisy, close-mindedness, docility and maliciousness of the generality of the Nigerian populace is mind-boggling. We 'occupied Nigeria' some years back for N87/litre [with halved subsidy], today, for N147/litre [and a supervisory regime that is so cloaked that we can hardly tell whether there is subsidy or not, or 'under-recovery'—for whatever it means] we have apparently lost our indignation and sense of right-judgement.

This regime has already out-borrowed the last two put together; the President is making final adjustments to his plan to borrow a whooping $29bn, an amount that is bigger than our budget, and yet we act as though everything is well.

Expectedly, they are planning to gag our feeble, impoverished voices on the social media, whilst our nation is being plundered and led to the precipice. When are we going to wake up to this almost irreversible rot?

I am not surprised that we aren't making significant headway, I would have been surprised if we were anywhere other than where we are.

Nigerians especially the West and North hated GEJ because he is from a minority tribe. They hated the fact that GEJ was making institutional progress and they fear their rubbish legacy would be desecrated so they started unnecessary attacks through occupy lagos and malicious publications by Lagos-Ibadan press. This was done by the West under pretence that GEJ refused to give them speakership even though GEJ made effort to put Mulikat but was frustrated by Tinubu who chose Tambuwal for his people. While the North intensified Bokoharam, kidnapped their own children, Sanusi went on rambling of NNPC missing $20 billion which Price Waterhouse Corper audited and found nothing substantial. NNPC is still loosing money till tomorrow, subsidy has doubled and fuel price has also doubled, we have borrowed over 10 trillion yet the roads are bad, electricity bad, security and crime has become a disaster, there is general unhappiness in the country, electoral gains made by GEJ has been reversed, elections has gone back to pre 2007 when results were written in politicians bedrooms. In all honesty, the west betrayed the South for nothing!
