And wrong informations are not passed through phone calls? They should just regulate calls too? Maybe even stop road transportation since there is a high percentage of accidents on the roads every day in Nigeria.

Can we just be honest to ourselves and come together in unison to proclaim that we made a huge mistake voting a tyrant into democracy?

Yorubas voted Buhari into power because of hate for SE and SS simple

It was no mistake.

Why is the social media a task for the presidency?

“All countries in the world are trying to make laws to check the excesses" GOAT

All these countries make laws and it citizens are living in comfort with less critics on social media. You started with hate speech now it's social media your headache.

You want to block every platform to criticize bad governance...do things right and see how people react positively on social media..

There's an urgent need to regulate social media in Nigeria, lots of mad people on Facebook and so many cyber terrorists on nairaland
If only you know the work of these "mad" people, you won't be dwelling so much on this your point.

This government should come to terms that social media is the new science, new reality. And it's gradually eroding the exclusivity of journalism. Not too long from now, journalists will become redundant.People can now get news for themselves via social media.
21 African countries censored the internet last year, but their peoples still got access to it.You cannot over regulate this new reality. Government should be looking at how to use the internet to impact the lives of people, as India,Rwanda and some others are doing ,not trying to gag free speech under the cloak of social media regulation.

Every nairalander should note this today that this government is afraid of the people. There's so much to this social media bill. If you let them silence you, they will start unleashing the plans because you can't talk.

They have done a lot of homework and believe that Nigerians protest heavily on social media against every unfavorable plans. For example increase in price of data back then followed by Ruga.

Minimize corruption to the barest level, then social media menace would fix itself.

All those keen on approval of social media bill are all irrational elements.

Miserable being hates criticism that's why they want to turn Nigerian public into graveyard silence.by imposition of obnoxious media law.Why is social media law more important than welfare, security and protection of Nigerians?

Buhari never said anything about " soaked in blood". That was mischievously interpreted wrongly which is why this social media regulation is important since someone like you also believed that lie.

Right interpretation was "there will be a big struggle like when 2 animals fight". He was referring to the elections.

No blood was mentioned anywhere.

Very stupid people, they need to control their brains first. They want to be able to do anything without criticism. Can you imagine? These people are delusional, small power they think they are God. The voice of the people is the voice of God and you are treading on very thin ice, you will all soon get what you have been pushing for. Nonsense.

Anyone that supports this crap should know that tomorrow is pregnant and even when false allegation is leveled against them, they would have no one to protect or fight for them. Release Sowore fools and stop releasing rubbish statements.

Omooba77:
The Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, has said the social media can’t be left to operate without control.

A State House statement on Monday said Shehu spoke at the Kawararafa Media Award in Abuja on Sunday night.

He said, “The entire Kasuwan Magani saga that resulted in the death of more than 50 people was because someone posted misleading information on WhatsApp that went viral.

“All countries in the world are trying to make laws to check the excesses. Many countries are trying to control the situation. The Europeans have placed a new law that holds the companies responsible.

“In United Kingdom, the parliament has received a report on social media. There is youth addiction to it, just like cigarettes. Without any form of control, it has done harm to women, ethnic minorities, individuals, institutions and countries,’’ the statement by the Deputy Director, Information, Mr Atta Essa, quoted Shehu as saying.

He said that to demonstrate that the government was not against free speech, the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, had repeatedly called for a meeting of stakeholders to agree on modalities for regulating the social media.

“The Federal Government is saying that stakeholders should come together and agree on regulation. We know that no matter how bad the situation is, it favours someone.

“Some have argued that our Constitution already has laws on libel, but the laws of the 60s never anticipated social media.

“No government has the right to muzzle freedom of speech. We don’t support the taking of lives as punishment. People insult others and share false information on social media. I hope that hate speech will be tackled so that Nigeria will be a sane place to live in,’’ he added.

He said the global trend required that a journalist should undergo training and licensing before reporting, adding that in the case of the social media, “with a phone, a tablet or laptop, anyone can reach millions, sometimes for good and other times with ulterior motives.’’

Racoon:
Go control BH, Fulani herdsmen, armed bandits, unabating executive/institutionalized corruption, deteriorating economy, unemployment, obey rule of law etc & leave the social media alone.Ndi ara.

No country leaves the social media alone. Absolutely no country. If the social media were to be left alone then there would be no need catching pedophiles or those who engage in child pornography through it. It should then be a free for all and everyone should be free to say or post whatever right?

Even instagram etc have laws against such as hate posts, nudity, terror posts etc right? Why do they not let it be a free for all?

Use your head to reason and not your anus
