3. Don't threaten, support or DEFEND violent acts against any person, tribe, race, animals, or group (e.g. rape).
4. Discussions of the art of love-making should be restricted to the hidden sexuality section.
5. Don't post pornographic or disgusting pictures or videos on any section of Nairaland.

6. Don't post adverts or affiliate links outside the areas where adverts are explicitly allowed.
7. Don't say, do, or THREATEN to do anything that's detrimental to the security, success, or reputation of Nairaland.
8. Don't post false information on Nairaland.
9. Don't use Nairaland for illegal acts, e.g scams, plagiarism, hacking, gay meetings, incitement, promoting secession.
10. Don't violate the privacy of any people e.g. by posting their private pics, info, or chats without permission.

Now i will ask you a very simple question.

IS SEUN RIGHT OR WRONG FOR CREATING THESE RULES ON A SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM WHICH IS MEANT TO PROMOTE FREEDOM OF SPEECH?

Answer sensibly and prove to everyone you are not dumb grin
Seun put that there because of dumb governments like the ones that you are protecting a defending like an slowpoke. He wants the freedom to run his personal business you slowpoke. NL has been here for a while without these rules.

The reason behind the laws nairaland has is so there would be a sense of SANITY here otherwise everywhere would be a mess.

You are indeed a dumbo

Social media regulation just like Seun had in mind for nairaland would bring a sense of SANITY to Nigeria and Nigerians otherwise everywhere would be mess as anybody can wake up, cook up a story and decide to share it to everyone despite it being a lie. Thus creating conflict and chaos over such a lie

The Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, has said the social media can’t be left to operate without control.

A State House statement on Monday said Shehu spoke at the Kawararafa Media Award in Abuja on Sunday night.

He said, “The entire Kasuwan Magani saga that resulted in the death of more than 50 people was because someone posted misleading information on WhatsApp that went viral.

“All countries in the world are trying to make laws to check the excesses. Many countries are trying to control the situation. The Europeans have placed a new law that holds the companies responsible.

“In United Kingdom, the parliament has received a report on social media. There is youth addiction to it, just like cigarettes. Without any form of control, it has done harm to women, ethnic minorities, individuals, institutions and countries,’’ the statement by the Deputy Director, Information, Mr Atta Essa, quoted Shehu as saying.

He said that to demonstrate that the government was not against free speech, the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, had repeatedly called for a meeting of stakeholders to agree on modalities for regulating the social media.

“The Federal Government is saying that stakeholders should come together and agree on regulation. We know that no matter how bad the situation is, it favours someone.

“Some have argued that our Constitution already has laws on libel, but the laws of the 60s never anticipated social media.

“No government has the right to muzzle freedom of speech. We don’t support the taking of lives as punishment. People insult others and share false information on social media. I hope that hate speech will be tackled so that Nigeria will be a sane place to live in,’’ he added.

He said the global trend required that a journalist should undergo training and licensing before reporting, adding that in the case of the social media, “with a phone, a tablet or laptop, anyone can reach millions, sometimes for good and other times with ulterior motives.’’

Buhari was referring to the elections and he meant it would be a tough one (fight) so everyone should do their best. It is like saying it would be a race to the finish or it would be a heavy struggle or it would be a close race.

The army of online zombies and supporters of APC shouted us down.

Is there anything I've predicted in Buhari's regime that has not happened?

Democracy is about disagreement, debates and more dissenting voices, the role of a government is to align all these opinions and try to find a common ground in moving the nation and people forward, this is the basis of democracy. You can not define what we can say or not...we should make clear laws on speeches that can lead to genocide, oppression of minorities, call to violence etc. But the term 'hate speech' is ambiguous, you can not control people on what to say or not, and no government has the power to curtail a people's freedom of speech and expression... as long as it's not intended to cause direct bodily harm of persons or a particular group. A people has the right to speak out against a government they feel is not listening to them, a people have the right to call to assemble and register their grievances peacefully...this hate speech will be used to subject the people...this present government should know that this law might be used even against them or their interests, in future when they are no more in power..

Have you heard American, UK, European or any civilised democratic government talk of 'hate speech' law, they can't and won't...cos it contradicts the freedom of speech and expression laws, enshrined as a universal human right.

What a pity!!!.
It is unfortunate that serious matters are being trivialized by people on this Forum and other places, especially by those who should know better, even more so by the PRESS itself-the Fourth Estate of Realm.
If the free Press you are enjoying now is taken away from Democracy, then what is left over is the rule of thumb by various Emperors that would soon invade your peace, your homes and your freedom is taking away!!.or why is the government so adamant to force this Bill on Nigerians.
Our Honourable Senate should just allow this bill to die a natural death, for ii is not in the interest of Nigerians.
The Religious Body should know that the Nigerian Nation will also be bruised from time to time.Is this part of what American Constitution gave us or just some desperado who never liked criticism of any sought. The earlier you shine your eyes the better for our Society,Children and future generations. This is not about Social Bill at all.

Sociologists and the ancient Greeks, source of modern day democracy, classified people in a given society into three groups.
1. The Idiots (selfish, greedy)
2. The Tribalists (narrow-minded, violent).
3. The Citizens (the ideal person)

Watch this video and identify the group you belong to. And where people like Buhari, Tinubu, Sowore, Nnamdi Kanu, Ojukwu, Obasanjo, Awolowo, and others past leaders belong to. Now you will understand why Nigeria is messed up.
