Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has threatened to proscribe the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) if the members do not conduct themselves well.

The governor said this yesterday on a television programme, where he maintained that his administration was committed to delivering his Greater Lagos vision.

Sanwo-olu said,

“The NURTW is a national body of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). It is a registered trade union.“Like other unions, they are under the supervision of the state government. We regulate and supervise them. They would be proscribed if they don’t conduct themselves well.”

He said his administration had recorded a lot of achievements in the last 196 days in the area of security, adding that he would stay up late monitoring the security situation in the state.

“At a period like this – going to the end of the year, criminal activities are usually on the increase because people usually want to do things to make quick money. We are working on salvaging the situation. We have a new Commissioner of Police who has hit the ground running from the first day he came in. He revealed that by 2020, the state government would build a new control and command centre, as well as instal over 2,000 cameras across the state."

“One of the things that we realised that is happening everyday in the world is that security is also going tech; you need a lot of devices to monitor all of it.

“Next year, we are building a new control and command centre as part of our safe city project, as part of our megacity security deliverables. We will have up to 2,200 high definition (HD) cameras across the state.”The governor also gave an overview of his plan for the environment and called for measures to prevent a situation that could lead to population explosion. He noted that one of the efforts by his administration was to appeal to residents to ensure they register with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) for proper capturing and planning.

“Thousands of people come into the city without plans, and we do not have any border control to mitigate this.A lot of people come into Lagos and they really don’t even have a place (to stay). They do not have a means where the next meal is going to come from; they do not know where they are going to sleep and that’s the reality,”
he added.

Just hear dis one... You wonder why >85% of Nigerians are mentally deranged...

Some people on this forum cannot argue their point without issuing a direct insult at the person they are quoting. Bro, acting that way might make you catch some fun for a while but it is not the best. Moreover, such would blur your point. Avoid such in your next quote.

On the subject matter:

It is no secret that MC Oluomo and his folks played a significant role in Sanwo Olu's election, just like they did for Ambode, who was once a favourite of Tinubu. Ambode didn't fall out with the powers that be in one day. It started from somewhere and continued until Tinubu was helpless in supporting him for a re-election despite the intervention of Buhari and co.

It is obvious Sanwo Olu is zealous about making tremendous impact in Lagos, which is highly commendable and should be supported by all in achieving that goal. But making statements like "...They would be proscribed if they don’t conduct themselves well.”, might not end up producing desired objective, particularly on that type of Union. It is a known fact that NURTW (Lagos Chapter particularly) is not a conventional union like other unions due to their involvement with top politicians and politics in general. So using their Leader to achieve same purpose would produce greater and speedy result for all.

Granted, there could be certain moments of rebellion but that should be tackled diplomatically. In a nutshell, that union would also become like any other union the day politicians cease to engage its leaders and members in political activities.

Meanwhile, have you ever thought of how MC Oluomo could command such great loyalty from his members? He is definitely not the strongest nor the wisest but it is obvious that he possess an amazing leadership skill over them.

Your argument is still the same thing I think majority of Nigerians have issues with. The question is, "Is it about their candidacy for subsequent elections (rigged by some few thugs and miscreants) or to remain objective by getting the job done?" MC Oluomo and his miscreants were accorded power by the Lagos gov't Tinubu simply for his own selfish purpose NOT, because MC is that important to the progress of the state but, since majority of Nigerians are used to being oppressed by a minority few, people would keep quiet.

Ambode was a Fool else, he could have played along, get a 2nd term and equally amass so much power just like Tinubu did. There could have been a shift in the balance of power if he played it well. The same thing Buhari is doing. He played along for the 1st term and would do as he want in his 2nd term... just watch!

Even though i agree with the move to clamp down on NURTW, the truth is that Sanwo-Olu doesn't have the liver to do it.

If this Governor had real liver, there is so much he could have done by now that he hasn't done. He doesn't portray a man with will!
