The Federal Government has ended Multichoice’s exclusive rights in broadcasting sporting events in the country following a statement issued by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

minister of information and culture

Special Assistant to the President (Media), Office of the Minister of Information and Culture, Segun Adeyemi made the statement available to newsmen.

Consequently it has directed the National Broadcasting Commission to immediately implement measures aimed at sanitising and re-positioning the industry.

“This regulation prevents the misuse of monopoly or market power or anti-competitive and unfair practices by a foreign or local broadcaster to suppress other local broadcasters in the television and radio markets.

“This is so, having removed exclusivity from all content in Nigeria and mandated the sharing of all content upon the payment of commercially viable fees,” he said.

Mohammed said the new regulation is contained in the report of the committee which he set up to work out the modalities for implementing the recommendations approved by President Muhammadu Buhari to re-position the broadcast industry.

The minister inaugurated the NBC Reform Implementation Committee on Oct. 10, 2019 and the committee chaired by Prof. Armstrong Idachaba submitted its report on Nov. 19 the same year.

The minister stressed that the break-in monopoly will boost reach and also maximise utilization by all broadcasters of premium content, in order to grow their platforms and investment in other content.

DSTV takes their sole privilege on broadcasting EPL matches from the premiership regulators.Meanwhile, it will a good thing if Nigeria can indiginize and break the monopoly of the SA owned DSTV but hope the privilege will not go to the archaic NTA?

DSTV will still own the rights but they would be compelled to sell to other Pay TV operators like StarTimes at commercial rates. This is similar to what happens in the UK.

Wait ooo how true?

But wait EPL taken away from supersport hmmmm inasmuch as l support patronizing local made goods it is not a yadstick to give a child an adult equipment oooo. I don't play with the premier league is equal to food to me, so plz federal govt should find a very good alternative to air these matches without any technical hitch cos I can't really vouch for the Nigerian television Authority (NTA).

Now that Liverpool are close to winning thier first premier since 1990, and the champions tie between Real Madrid and Man city closeby ...e nu go funny.ooo

I hope you understand what exclusivity is.... or you just want to talk. The rights to air EPL is no longer with dstv meaning anyone can broadcast. so if it is dstv you like, you can watch it there. no one is asking or forcing you to watch it on NTA

And they will generate more money by selling at commercial rates to other pay TV platforms. The disadvantage to DSTV is that they would lose the leverage of being the exclusivity broadcaster and lose subscribers. But they will still earn the bulk of the subscriber fees from other platforms.

Selling commercial rates means selling to subscribers through other platforms. Usually the pay TV platform e.g. StarTimes will buy in bundles of 10k. 20k, 100k subs at a rate slightly lower than what DSTV subscribers pay for those rights. Both DSTV and Startimes get a share of the fee. Obviously, the bulk of the fee goes to DSTV since StarTimes would have to sell it at competitive rates.

if you cannot afford it don't watch even in the U.K. where the EPL hails from it is not free and Sky had monopoly for a long time before BT sport came into the picture.

This is just noise making. DStv bids for the right to show EPL matches in the west African region(not just Nigeria) and other regions. If DStv is successful in their bid, the rights to show the EPL in west Africa goes to DStv for 4 or 5 years before another bid is done.
Our FG is just making noise. If they want the rights to the EPL, they have to bid for it, remember they are bidding for the rights to show the EPL not only in Nigeria but the entire West African region. So the FG must show proof that they are capable of convering the West African region.

DSTV will simply stop showing it in Nigeria.

If dstv refuses to sell the rights to local channels at affordable prices, please let them stop showing it... Simple!!... In as much as I love football, monopoly is bad!!

It's not monopoly; DSTV paid for it. To be exclusive, they pay more. That's how football rights work everywhere. One station monopolizes a country or region. The FA is not going to bargain with every tom, dick and harry, so they choose major players only. In the whole of the American market, only NBC has the rights to show it. The administration is showing illiteracy and lack of exposure per usual. Please don't support this nonsense policy.

What does EPL broadcasting rights have to do with Nigeria government? Supersports pays EPL for the sole broadcasting right in West, east and South Africa. It has nothing to do with Nigeria government.

If there was no supersport, NTA will still not be able to show all 380 EPL matches

They can take their sole broadcasting right to other places or African countries. We don't want such monopoly here, it stifles growth and competition.

Besides, it is not super sport alone that broadcast Epl matches... There's being sport, there is canal sport etc which can be used here in Nigeria, but we needed an enabling law that will not allow such monopoly. Imagine if Mtn had the type of monopoly DSTV have, how much do you think you would be buying airtime?

Monopoly is not good for growth of business of any country. Imagine other pay TV showing canal sport 1 to 12, beinsport 1-10 without DSTV interfering in their affairs and taking them to court, how much do you think DSTV premium subscription would cost?
