.

OBJ wasn't a governor. When I first posted this comment, many picked KALU as the governor#2.

FACT: All Nigerian governors fall in one of these categories.

The question is: who is to be arrested and who is to be set free?

I will chill and watch.

BigB that is not the question AT ALL,

according to your reasoning as long as all are not arrested simultaneously, then no one should be arrested. that is extremely flawed

if you said no innocent person should be prosecuted, that is another thing entirely, but to base your defence of a crime you committed on the excuse that someone else benefited, or that you were not alone cannot stand anywhere. Even if it is a case of political witch-hunting, AS LONG AS THE PERSON IS GUILTY, He should face the full weight of the law.

We cannot wait till we are ready to arrest everyone, or when there are no political motives involved, that luxury of 'perfection' as you call it, is one we cannot afford as a nation. Every individual, no matter how highly placed that gets prosecuted stands as an example to others : even if you steal with 'them', these same people may turn around and stab you in the back, another dissuading factor from corruption.

it is not a matter of who deserves to be arrested, if you stole 10million and another stole 100billion, you are both culpable under the law, the lack of prosecution of the seemingly larger crime takes absolutely nothing from the guilt of the smaller one. Ideally we want ALL to be caught, but we'll take what we can get on the road to that destination.

I think it is clear to all that all these politicians are corrupt to the bone. I personally feel that it makes no sense for a Stinky man to call a garbage man DIRTY.
It makes no sense.

All I'm asking from our government is to be fair, professional, respect our Constitution and embrace perfection during these operations. Or else, the end result will be business as usual (i.e all governors will be sent back to their mansions).

Moreover, I always feel that if government is truly serious about fighting war against corruption effectively and efficiently, they must pay more attention to prevention.

Prevention is much better and cheaper than cure.

Question is how do you prevent corruption in Nigeria? This should be our main focus.

You can arrest every single governor from 1979 to 2007 if you want; this is not enough and it is not sending any message to anybody. It is only educating the new governors to be smarter and design a better strategy or a new method to futher loot our nation.

I totally support the arrest of the governors, as long as the government is going to be fair and do their job accordingly.
No short cuts, no magomago and no selectivity.

IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?

i believe u brother. u really sabi what's going on here, EFCC is joking unless people like odili are in, but them have tried so far to start with those men that refused to report to their initial call.

and just incase you may be willing to help me enlighten those people who feel the niger-deltanns are just mouth washng then i re-paste my reply on that topic below, for ur perusal and appraisal.

here is it below"

"this happens to be my first post, since joining nairaland about 6 months ago.
i have read several posts and articles about other topics, ranging from jobs to politics and et al, but nothing cuaght me reading for so long and even prompted me to reply, than the posts pictures and replies on this burning issue of the niger delta.

infact, i feel that those who have posted favourably in support of the action of the militants are true patriots of this region like my humble self, while those who have opposed it are just being selfish and dumb and really need a trip around the impoverished areas like we have, rather than express their shit views, mainly from their knowledge of only the cities like lagos and abuja, to mention but afew, where the wealth of these impoverished areas have helped build.

although, i feel a churn in my stomach, as i recently read of the dimension of child kidnapping which criminal elements have turned the struggle into (there by giving it a bad name, even from adherent supporters like myself) i only hope that the recent peace moves spear-headed by the federal goverment, the peace committes and all well meaning nigerians and groups will make our troops (our boys out there in the creeks) to cease fire a little bit (but cautiously though, considering the deceptive nature of the nigerian state) and let's see what their intentions truly are, towards developing our land.

if only the likes of asari, gbomo jom and GOC Governemt can have access to the internet and see my views, i urge them to keep on the struggle, as indeed we are proud of them, whilst admonishing them to set up a task force to flush out the criminal elements amongst their midst, that are presently painitng the struggle in bad light.

kudos my bros them, egbesu will continually de on guard for una as una de roll out to chase those crazy baldheads out of the land, korofo go also de clear the road for una and una go dey comot as army de cum or una go just de cum as army de go, last last un go kpuff any traitor when try to double cross the struggle.

i think for now it is still widely known that the EFCC are still treating some corrupt people based on the order they get from someone somewhere, can someone tell me how on earth would ex enugu state gov. even dream of contesting for any post in this country any more, where people who stole less or nothing were not allowed to contest for election in this country, i truly do not have faith in what rabadu is doing any longer, over 150 pages of articles were released by the EFCC indicting the ex gov. of enugu which ribadu tagged the most corrupt governor. odili's cased is being closed may be because he had to step down for president yar adua, where is gov. lucky, fayose is no where to be found, even if the fmr. president can tell us some corrupt pratice are pardonable, arresting corrupt politicians dose not seem to make sence any longer if tafa balogun could be jailed for just six month and a yahoo boy was jailed for 10 years for inpersonating CBN governor. i seem not to understand if the rich could be jailed for offences they truly commited.

Ex-gov Nnamani arrested: Turaki weeps as court refuses bail for him, Kalu - Dariye returns to EFCC cell

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the immediate past governor of Enugu state, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, the Nigerian Tribune can authoritatively reveal.

This is contrary to reports that he had fled the National Hospital, Abuja, where he was being treated for an undisclosed illness.

The Commissioner for Information in his administration, Mr. Igbonekwu Ogazimorah, confirmed his former boss’s arrest by the anti-corruption agency.

Ogazimorah told the Nigerian Tribune on the telephone that his former boss was taken away by the commission’s operatives yesterday afternoon.

The commission’s operatives were said to have cordoned off the male ward of the National Hospital immediately they got wind of Nnamani’s stay in the ward.

About 16 detectives were put on surveillance to forestall any escape attempt by the former governor.

The commission had accused the former governor of looting the state to the tune of billions of naira during his eight-year tenure.

While still in office, two of his commissioners were arrested and charged to court by the commission over allegations of assisting the ex-governor to steal the state’s money.

In a related development, the immediate past governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Saminu Turaki, fought tears unsuccessfully on Monday, as a Federal High Court in Abuja remanded him and his Abia State counterpart, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, in prison custody pending the determination of their bail bids in a week’s time.

Their Plateau counterpart, Chief Joshua Dariye, was, however, ordered by another court to continue his stay in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) till Thursday when his bail application would be looked into.

The three former governors are being tried by the anti-graft commission on allegations of money laundering running into about N40 billion while in office.

Clutching a copy of the Holy Quran, Turaki, who is a serving senator, gave in to emotions and sobbed in court when it dawned on him that the trial judge, Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako, would not be considering his bail application.

His relatives could not but share in his grief as some of them also wept openly.

All the three former governors were formally charged on Monday with all of them pleading not guilty to all the counts.

While Kalu stood for about two hours in the dock to enter his plea for the 107 counts against him, Turaki had to contend with 32 counts, while Dariye’s was 14 counts.

Turaki had to salute the stamina of Kalu for standing all through the plea-taking exercise by saying “you are strong o” when Kalu was asked to step down from the dock.

The prosecuting commission also revealed that the accounts of the indicted former governors would be frozen soon.

Its counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, told journalists after the court session that the commission was already working towards achieving that, which he said would be sealed by the court.

In the different charges against the former governors, Turaki is alleged to have laundered about N36 billion, Kalu, N3.1 billion and Dariye, N750 million.

Kalu and Turaki, who appeared before Justice Nyako, had their bail applications turned down because they were filed moments before their trial commenced, with the trial judge conceding to the request of the prosecuting counsel that time should be given to respond to the issues raised in the applications.

Sensing that their freedom would not be early, they separately requested to remain in the EFCC custody, and despite the prosecution not objecting, the judge ordered that they should be kept in prison custody.

Dariye, who appeared before Justice Babs Kuewumi of the same court, also had his bail bid stalled, due to time factor in the filing, but the judge still okayed his continued stay with the commission.

While Dariye was asked to come back on Thursday, Kalu’s trial was adjourned to July 25 and Turaki, July 23.

Speaking through his counsel, Mike Ozekhome, Kalu pointed out that great men like Mandela had gone through his type of ordeal, saying that he saw no big deal in the judge’s order.

The anti-graft commission, in its case against Turaki, claimed that he laundered N33.6 billion in one year, with N17 billion out of the said amount in one day. He was also accused of stealing $20 million within the same period.

The commission claimed that the former governor commenced the alleged fraud on May 3, 2006.

The EFCC told a court that the former Governor of Jigawa State, Saminu Turaki, allegedly looted N17bn from the state’s treasury in one day. This is is only part of the N33bn and another $20m Turaki allegedly misappropriated within a year.

The EFCC showed that on May 3, 2006, alone 17 fraudulent bank transactions were carried out by him during which the N17bn was diverted.

On July 31, 2006, he allegedly withdrew N91.8m from the state’s treasury and N32.5m on August 27.

On September 27 2006, he withdrew N3.46m; N417m on October 27, 2006; N32.5m on November 1, 2006; and N25.1m on November 28, 2006.

And by the time he left office ten months N9.2bn had been siphoned from the state’s treasury by the former governor in three transactions.

As the charges were read to him, Turaki looked tired and held on to a copy of the Holy Quran,, shook his head intermittently in the dock and at a point tears rolled down his cheeks.

After the charges were read to him, his lawyer moved an application for his bail arguing that the offences which Turaki allegedly committed were bailable.

The judge however ordered that the former governor be remanded in Kuje Prisons till the next adjourned date of July 23.

EFCC to Prosecute 6 More Ex-Govs

Six former governors will soon be arrested and prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), THISDAY has learnt.
Three of the governors are believed to be "close" to the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, while another two are said to have contributed to the purse of the PDP in the presidential elections.
This revelation came yesterday even as the EFCC seemed set to arraign former governor of Enugu State, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, in Lagos today for allegedly laundering amounts totalling N5.621 billion during his eight-year tenure.
EFCC's decision to arrest and prosecute more former governors, according to an inside source, followed the "maturation" of the cases that were investigated against them.
"We want to follow the rule of law to the letter," the source said "We don't want to miscarry justice. Our aim is to establish water-tight cases so that nobody will acuse us of double standards or poorly done investigations."
THISDAY gathered last night that Nnamani will be arraigned today in Lagos on a 34-count charge of fraud, conspiracy, concealment and money-laundering.
Nnamani and three other persons using seven business concerns allegedly owned by him were fingered in the siphoning of the said funds.
What could have been a formal arraignment of the embattled former governor before Justice Muhammad Shuaib of the Federal High Court, Lagos by EFCC was stalled yesterday as the commission failed to produce him in court.
EFCC operatives were said to have taken Nnamani into custody on Monday in Abuja. The former governor who had been on admission at the National Hospital, Abuja had gone to the EFCC office on Monday evening when operatives of the anti-graft commission promptly arrested him.
But THISDAY learnt that Nnamani complained to the operatives that he had not completed his treatment at the National Hospital, Abuja and needed to take his medication following which he was taken back to the hospital.
Yesterday, operatives of the EFCC standing guard at Nnamani’s ward in the hospital restricted his movement and interaction with people. His phones were allegedly taken from him and switched off.
But because of his expected arraignment in Lagos today, the former governor was said to have been transferred to Lagos.
Anxious journalists had laid siege to the premises of the court as early as 7.30 am based on the news that the former governor was going to be arraigned. They were disappointed when by 3.00pm, there was no sign of Nnamani and EFCC officials.
Although it could not be ascertained why EFCC elected to arraign Nnamani in Lagos instead of Abuja where his three other former colleagues are facing trial but a source said it might not be unconnected with the fact that the ex-governors’ three former commissioners are already facing trial in Lagos.
The EFCC had last February named Nnamani in a N5,411,730,026 money laundering suit it instituted against the three officials.
They were accused of concealing the origin of the N5.4bn that formed part of the statutory allocation to the state local government’s funds. The accused were also alleged to have collaborated with Nnamani to perpetrate the money laundering act.
Though Nnamani’s name appeared throughout the 29-count charge, he could not be prosecuted over the alleged financial crimes because he was protected by the immunity clause in Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution.
The source said since the court in Lagos had refused to grant bail to the former commissioners since their arrest many months ago, EFCC might want Nnamani to join his former commissioners in the Lagos trial.
However, the charge sheet with the suit No FHC/L/230C/07, dated July 16, 2007 and signed by Mr. S.K. Atteh, on behalf of the Chairman of the EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, a copy of which was made available to THISDAY at the court premises yesterday. It listed other accused persons as Sunday Anyaogu and Sylvia Onwubuemeli as well as Chinero Nwigwe said to be at large.
The companies alleged to be involved in the various deals included Rainbownet Nig  Ltd, Hillgate Nig. Ltd., Cosmos FM, Capital city Automobile (Nig.) Ltd,  Renaissance University Teaching Hospital, Renaissance University and Mea Mater Elizabeth High School.
Part of the 34-count reads: •That Chimaroke Nnamani, Chinero Nwigwe (now at large), Sunday  Anyaogu, Sylvia Onwubuemeli, Rainbownet Nig Ltd, Hillgate Nig. Ltd.,  Cosmos FM, Capitalcity Automobile (Nig.) Ltd, Renaissance University  Teaching Hospital, Renaissance University, Mea Mater Elizabeth High  School between August 2003 and May 2007 within the jurisdiction this  Court did conspire among yourselves to commit an offence wit:  laundering of funds belonging to Enugu State Government Statutory  Allocation and you thereby committed an offence punishable under  Section of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004.
•  That you Chimaroke Nnamani, Chinero Nwigwe (now at large), Sunday  Anyaogu, Sylvia Onwubuemeli, Rainbownet Nig Ltd,  Hillgate Nig. Ltd.,  Cosmos FM, Capitalcity Automobile (Nig.) Ltd, Renaissance University  Teaching Hospital, Renaissance University, Mea Mater Elizabeth High  School sometime in August 2003 within the jurisdiction of this court did collaborate to conceal the genuine origin of the sum of N173,151.45 which sum was illegally taken from the statutory allocation to the  Local Governments in Enugu State and you thereby committed an offence  punishable under Section 14(1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition)  Act, 2003.
• That you Chimaroke Nnamani, Chinero Nwigwe (now at large), Sunday  Anyaogu, Sylvia Onwubuemeli, Rainbownet Nig Ltd, Hillgate Nig. Ltd.,  Cosmos FM, Capitalcity Automobile (Nig.) Ltd, Renaissance University  Teaching Hospital, Renaissance University, Mea Mater Elizabeth High  School sometime in the year 2004 within the jurisdiction of this Court  did collaborate to conceal the genuine origin of the sum of  N66,778,445  which sum was illegally taken  from the statutory  allocation to Aninri Local Government in Enugu State and you thereby  committed an offence punishable under Section 14(1) of the Money  Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2003.
Meanwhile, former Anambra State governor, Dr. Andy Uba, denied yesterday that he was in the know of how former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Saminu Turaki, contributed huge sums of money for the failed third term project.
Special Assistant to Uba, Mr. Chuks Akunna, said in a statement that the former governor was never a witness to Turaki or any other person handing out money for the project.
He said in the statement that, “The attention of Dr. Andy Emmanuel Uba (MFR), former governor of Anambra State, has been drawn to certain ‘confessional statements’ credited to former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Saminu Turaki, to the effect that he (Uba) was in the know of how Turaki contributed huge sums of money in support of the failed tenure elongation agenda.
“Even though the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has come out in black and white to declare that no governor, Turaki inclusive, was found to have contributed money in support of the third term agenda, Dr. Andy Uba still finds it necessary to state, for the records, that he was never witness to Alhaji Saminu Turaki, or anybody for that matter, handing out any money for any project.
“Dr. Andy Uba understands that this may not be the best of times for the former governor and his aides, but also believes that Alhaji Saminu Turaki should be able to navigate the legal minefields without resorting to dragging his (Andy’s) name into the matter for political reasons best known to Turaki and his aides.”
