Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has given a stern warning to all banks to seek its approval before sacking more than five staff. The bank gave the warning in a communique released through  the Bankers Committee after its meeting on Friday.

The committee, in a circular signed by Director, Financial Markets Department, CBN, Angela Sere-Ejembi, emphasized that all banks should send sample of Contract Letter issued to outsourced staff + SLA  with the company being used to run outsourced staff.

It stated, “Banks should note and be guided by the CBN circular in respect of laying off staff that is more than five. This requires apex bank’s notification and approval going forward.”

The Bankers’ Committee had said the mass sacking in banks would be reduced in the shortest time possible.

The committee noted that while it was working on how to reduce the level of job losses in the sector, there would always be reasons people would have to be sacked from their workplaces.

It explained that while the decision to sack bank workers had elicited a lot of sentiments from both the public and private sectors, the banks understood the implications of having to relieve workers of their jobs in view of the current economic situation in the country.

Early January, one of the largest banks in the country started the new year with the sack of about 2,000 staff in one fell swoop. Although, the bank denied the story when contacted, the social media were awash with the news at the weekend. If the report were true, it would have served as a reminiscent to similar incident of last year when the same number of staff  were laid off in January, May and July by Ecobank Nigeria Limited.

Several Nigerian banks are in the habit of arbitrarily disengaging thousands of their staff at very short notices. While some would be served their dismissal letters without serverance packages, others were not that lucky, as they were not informed officially but got blocked from accessing the bank’s server.

For instance, most of the Ecobank Nigeria Plc workers under the auspices of the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), shut down the headquarters of the bank following the disengagement of about 1200 workers in July last year. The workers, with their placards, took to the bank’s head office to protest their disengagement, insisting that the employer should pay them commensurate benefits.

They would simply keep hiring disposable Temporary or Contract staffs... CBN did something proactive and must be commended .. but that Yeye man called Chris Ngige needs to wake up as a Minister of labor and restrict contract staff and employment probation period to only 6 months, after 6 months a Temporary Staff must get an actual contract of engagement

In that case we will space the sack to run through the year, like 4 staff at a time till we get at the required number.

Good way to go....

Unfortunately, they always have one reasons or the other.

Who are this ones decieving, something that has been going on under their nose for decades, it is now they have woken up, well, its folly, not to rejoice when a fool awakes from it's slumber.
The job insecurity in many of these Institutions and Companies is disgraceful and embarrassing, they pay you little, work you like a donkey, then fire you with little or no warning.
If they expect my gbola to rise, on this piece of news, then they must be demented.

You won't understand how terrible this thing is unless you have worked in a bank.. They recruit them very young and sap their youth.. No social life, all your skills die as you don't have the time to develop them or learn any new skill that will be useful to you later in life.
Then suddenly you get called by your supervisor and you are asked to resign for no reason.. They will ensure the resignation letter carries the right words making it sound like you are sooo happy to resign... Most supervisor that are task with doing the dirty job also get called to drop their resignation letter too... Nothing like loyalty in the banking sector..

This is more like playing to the gallery. Nobody should be fooled here that the banks will comply.

Did the banks inform CBN before employing the staffs?

Second base Abeg...

Rubbish
Banks are private businesses which depend on performance to make profit to pay their staff, not government agencies which do nothing and receive allocation at the end of the month.

They want to infest the performance-driven private banking sector with their useless, unproductive, redundant and incompetent civil service attitude.

So if staff are misbehaving or unable to meet performance target, the bank can't sack them? They should keep paying incompetent and unproductive staff?

Rubbish
I trust the banks will fight this or it will just be another paper law that wouldn't be enforced.

Anyone who can't perform should be booted out.
If the bank can't pay you any longer, then it's better you're sacked than to keep you and be owing you salary for months while tarnishing their reputation.

In fact, the government civil service should be copying these banks. Every month, there should be Performance Review for in all government offices for all staff. Anyone unable to perform should be sanctioned and if he/she continues, should be booted out and more productive people employed.

No wonder they like government work, where they earn money without adding value, where they enter office by 10am, gist with their colleagues till 12pm while using their non-chalant attitude to frustrate the people their supposed to provide services to, then sleep till 2pm when they'll begin packing their bags to leave before 4pm. And at the end of the month, office will receive allocation and staff will receive salary for doing nothing. I've always said, the Nigerian Civil Service is the largest welfare scheme in this country, where free money is shared to unproductive people.

Re: CBN Bars Banks From Sacking More Than 5 Staff Without Approval by Nobody: 8:26am On Feb 25, 2020
Lol.

No labour laws.

Or maybe just lack of enforcement.

You sack people without cause in civilized climes, you pay dearly for your mistake o.

Anyway, this law won't work.

There are 56 weeks in a year.

Sack 5 every week. You'll reach your target number.

Enforce labour laws. Or Banks should start hiring temps that are paid daily or weekly.

You still cannot sack 2000 staff in a year even if you sack 4 staff everyday. Be guided.

Nice one

How is it a nice one. The effect is that hiring staff will become more tedious and the process will be laced with all manner of stiff conditions and hard contract clauses. Banks will become reluctant to hire, period. It bites both ways. A free market hates regulations. You simply cannot legislate your way to prosperity and in this case job security.

The CBN should let banks do whatever they have to do to survive within reasonable limits. The CBN shares more responsibility than banks for the poor state of the economy of which the dynamics of the job market are critical factors in play.

If the economy is good jobs will be created and secure. Banks donot have the liberty of so called external reserves from crude sales to toy with irresponsibly like the CBN. They are a business not an NGO. If they go under much more people will suffer,
