Coronavirus : Atiku Donates N50m, Asks President Buhari To Give Each Household N10,000

...... says network providers should send each mobile line N1500

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019 general elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday, donated 50 million naira as contribution to a relief Fund that will form part of the stimulus package to fight the deadly Coronavirus.

Igbere TV recalls that Atiku’s son tested positive to the coronavirus pandemic and was moved to General Hospital Gwagwalada in Abuja for treatment.

In a statement made available to Igbere TV, Atiku asked President Muhammadu Buhari led administration and state governments to provide palliatives to the Nigerian people to enable them to survive, even as they abide by these necessary measures put in place for their safety.

According to him, "at an approximate 30 million households or thereabouts, the government should devise modalities to distribute N10,000 as a supplement for foodstuff to each household, among other palliative measures, with no one left behind."

The statement reads,

"As the coronavirus pandemic ravages the world, I applaud the various Nigerian state governments who have proactively taken measures, such as issuing stay at home orders, and shutting down non-essential markets and other places of mass gatherings, while also giving guidelines for social distancing."

"However, we must accept the fact that much of the Nigerian public have a subsistence existence. A large percentage of our people do not have the financial capacity to withstand long periods of self-isolation and even lockdown. It is, therefore, incumbent on the Federal and state governments to provide palliatives to the Nigerian people to enable them to survive, even as they abide by these necessary measures put in place for their safety."

"At an approximate 30 million households or thereabouts, the government should devise modalities to distribute N10,000 as a supplement for foodstuff to each household, among other palliative measures, with no one left behind."

"It is thus time for the National Assembly to reconvene in an emergency session, perhaps by teleconference (in line with the demands of social distancing), to legislate a Stimulus Package Act that will cater for all Nigerian citizens."

"I also call on all Mobile Telephony Companies in Nigeria to urgently develop mobile money platforms so that the government can reach the unbanked with financial assistance. I also urge these telecommunications firms to offer each of the 100 million mobile phone lines in Nigeria free credit of at least ₦1500 per mobile line, so that Nigerians who show symptoms, or those who just want information, can call the nearest available health facility, or even an ambulance service, as the case may be."

"I commend all individuals and corporate organisations who have one way or the other provided some form of relief for the Nigerian people. In essence, this is what makes Nigeria great, when we help each other at such crisis times as this, irrespective of any differences. I further call on more corporations and individuals with capacity, to assist the public in these trying times."

"To this end, Priam Group pledges N50 million on my behalf as my humble contribution to a relief Fund that will form part of the stimulus package."

10k is too small.

Baba Buhari should order data bundle of 15GB for every Nigerian with browsing phone, pay our nepa bill for the month of March and April, then credit our azza atleast 100k each.

Buhari would rather approve 10 billion naira for Kogi election.
They would rather share 5k 5k for election buying plus their election packages ( garri and rice) with their pictures on it.

Wow, that's a bold step, more grace sir.
I just hope that the said structures will do as suggested, but seeing as he is an opposition leader, that doesn't seem likely.

Just my thoughts though

Dear Abubakar Atiku, please quit politicizing COVID-19 with mischievous drama. If you are sincere about about this cause, gather your friends and associates as you did during your campaign fundraising to raise GOOD money and distribute using either your own foundation or a trusted independent NGO to reach target beneficiaries. Afterall, the owner of Alibaba has been going about, doing good without any mischievous drama. Please do the right thing in the right way.

Same Atiku first brought up the idea of reduction of petrol pump price in light of declining crude prices, and the government heeded the call.

Sounds commendable on face value but not sure it's realistic to implement.

First, do we have proper data of Nigerians for the sharing of the funds? Secondly, the sharing process will be riddle with corruption as more than 50% of the beneficiaries may not receive the funds. Another issue is that 30m households x #10k = #300b. With the dwindling revenue resulting from the crash in oil prices (plus expected crash in customs and FIRS revenue), it will be hard to see the government cough out #300b for such project.

Please note that I'm completely in support of it if it was implemented. I'm just saying it may not be realistic. Of course, the govt could decide to prioritize this and sacrifice other expenses, but our govts are never known to place such high premium on the welfare of citizens.
