Or at least those are the results obtained from the data gathered to construct the prosperity index. The group behind the ranking Legatum Institute, are a non partisan think tank based in London. The data/polls they gathered are sourced from a slew of international organizations including the Heritage Foundation and the World Economic Forum.

My oh My, what a shame.

Even Kazakhstan and Rwanda are more prosperous and happy than Nigerians

My analysis about Nigeria is that the traits of greed, lack of integrity and deception , have brought upon us God's wrath. Therefore we have wicked leaders who lead such a people.

Sorry the truth hurts but this is our main issue - LACK OF INTEGRITY

@Poster, that is impossible. Only some weeks ago, a Nigerian living in the UK unequivocally stated and declared Nigeria the happiest Nation on earth where poverty does not seem to matter. lol

Finally the truth is being revealed. I used to wonder how on earth Nigeria could be the happiest nation on earth yet go through so much troubles. I was wondering whether Nigeria don run mad coz only madness will keep u happy in the face of all the crap going on there. Atleast now I know many Nigerians aren't as odd as I thought.

I reallydo feel for those NLanders who were just last week slapping their backsides congratulating themselves for being the happiest people on earth.

So far, Nigeria is still one of the happiest nation, it may not have prospered much, but it's still happy. And I believe Denmark is the #1 happiest nation.

Don't worry, be happy !

There is a church or mosque every ten steps in Nigeria, which is concrete evidence that GOD loves Nigeria more than any other nation on earth, to the extent of establishing more branch offices there than anywhere else.

Praise the Lord !

I am surprised that Nigeria would have a place in the roll call of happiest countries in the world. Whose opinions did the pollsters sample? Is it the baba in the village with 6 children with no nutritious food to eat, no clothes on them, no shoes on their feet, no going to school because he can't afford to send them, sickness everyday and no hospital or medication to treat them, no tooth brush or tooth paste to brush their mouths ever, no soap or water to take shower and no knowledge of what is going on around them among others. We cannot be fooled with all these fake polls taken within the four corners of their rooms. Goodluck or whatever his name is should be ashamed of himself as well as other members of his government. Nigerians are brainier than Westerners and we are far behind in development, if any, and the heartless people in govt have nothing to offer to save Nigerians from starvation, rather, they are caring for themselves only. Every Nigerian I know in the U.S.A who attended college, including myself, surpassed Americans and other Nationalities academically. All our brains have been rendered useless by these power grabbers who have been running and ruining (not ruling) our lives since independence. Where are you taking all the money at the end of your journey on earth?

If you think just because one faceless, jobless, disenchanted and distressed group of people decided to publish drivel after a crack smoking session, rose up and placed us bottom of a group will change the fact that we are happy down here, then your brain should be worked on by a motor mechanic!

Yea, 106 out of the World Legatum PROSPERITY( wealth and well being)  index. . . . since when does prosperity= happiness?

So far, Nigeria is still one of the happiest nation, it may not have prospered much, but it's still happy. And I believe Denmark is the #1 happiest nation.

In the article they explain.

Think about it for a minute: What does happiness mean to you?

For most, being happy starts with having enough money to do what you want and buy what you want. A nice home, food, clothes, car, leisure. All within reason.

But happiness is much more than money. It's being healthy, free from pain, being able to take care of yourself. It's having good times with friends and family.

Furthermore, happiness means being able to speak what's on your mind without fear, to worship the God of your choosing, and to feel safe and secure in your own home.

Happiness means having opportunity--to get an education, to be an entrepreneur. What's more satisfying than having a big idea and turning it into a thriving business, knowing all the way that the harder you work, the more reward you can expect?

While it is not perfect I would think that these are at least is a good base measure of happiness. According to the research Nigeria were dissatisfied with many major facets of there lives such as government and economic progress. When Nigerians responded positively, it ran contrary to what was expected and there own responses. For example.

At 8.3%, infant mortality in Nigeria is high, while life expectancy, when adjusted for healthy years lived, is very low, at 42 years. Nigeria places 104th, 94th, and 99th on the Index, respectively, for each variable. Undernourishment is above the global average, and in 69th place, with 10% of the population consuming less than the daily minimum standard of calories on a daily basis. The incidence of tuberculosis is high. Immunisation rates for both infectious diseases, at 54%, and measles, at 62%, are extremely low, placing the country among the bottom five of the Index. Health expenditure is a mere $50 (PPP) a year per capita, and there are only three hospital beds for every 10,000 people. Nigeria falls among the bottom five countries on these variables, as well as for its poor sanitation facilities with only 7% of people having adequate access, very low levels of satisfaction with water quality, and an extremely high number of deaths due to respiratory disease, with 26 fatalities per 10,000 persons. Given the low levels of performance on many health-related variables, it is surprising that health satisfaction, at 81%* and ranking 57th in the Index, is not lower. Only 23%* of people, in a 2009 survey, reported worrying about their health the day before, and 76%* of people felt well-rested. On both variables, Nigeria places among the top 25. A very low 15%* of people believe that their health problems prevent them from engaging in activities others their age enjoy, placing the country in sixth place, on this variable. However, Nigeria places last in the Index for the very low 31%* of people who derive satisfaction from the beauty of their environment.

While people felt that they were healthy enough to do what they enjoyed, they also voice extreme displeasure or admitted they had little access for the infrastructure that is supposed to help maintain good health.

A good number of Nigerians are dissatisfied with security and consequences of political involvement.
Consequently, many people are afraid to express their political opinions openly and the country has the seventh highest rate of human flight. Nigeria places in the bottom 20 of the Index for the high degree of civil and ethnic violence, as well as for the high degree of demographic instability resulting from border disputes, ownership or occupancy of land, access to transportation outlets, control of religious or historical sites, or proximity to environmental hazards. According to a 2009 survey, a very high 17%* of the population reported having been assaulted during the previous year, while a high 24%* had property stolen placing Nigeria 105th and 96th, respectively, on these variables. A below-average 53%* of people feel safe walking home alone at night, placing the country 66th in the Index on this measure.

A good number of Nigerians are dissatisfied with their civil liberties
Civil liberties are low in Nigeria, as are the levels of freedom of expression, belief, association, and personal autonomy. Just 54%* of people are satisfied with their freedom of choice, placing the country among the bottom 15 countries in the Index. Perceived tolerance for immigrants and for ethnic and racial minorities is low, with around 55%*of the population believing that the area or city where they live is a good place for these groups. Nigeria falls in the bottom 25 on the Index for both variables.

All in all I would say the data used to construct the prosperity index is also pretty good means of gauging happiness.

So far, Nigeria is still one of the happiest nation, it may not have prospered much, but it's still happy. And I believe Denmark is the #1 happiest nation.

Prosperity is the state of flourishing, thriving, success, or good fortune. [1] Prosperity often encompasses wealth but also includes others factors which are independent of wealth to varying degrees, such as happiness and health.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosperity

prosperity - the condition of prospering; having good fortune
              --- successfulness , upbeat, well-being, wellbeing, welfare - a contented state of being happy and healthy and prosperous;
--- good fortune, good luck, luckiness - an auspicious state resulting from favorable outcomes
--- strength - the condition of financial success; "the strength of the company's stock in recent weeks"
--- success - a state of prosperity or fame; "he is enjoying great success"; "he does not consider wealth synonymous with success"

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/prosperity

For those who believe in money and opulence, having more of it could be seen as a measure of their happiness. For those who believe that having less worries and stress, means being happy and content, then yes, less stress and worries implies they are happier and more content.
