Always thought it was Yoruba, but it was apparently borrowed from Hausa! http://susannelamido..com/2005/07/whats-wahala.html |

Language is a living thing. It comes to birth; endures a life-time and eventually dies. There is a language evolving in Nigeria (it may one day be called Naija language). This new language has its parents as Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Pidgin and other Nigerian languages and being championed by the avant-gardists. "No wahala" is one of the phrases of this new language. This can become someone's research topic somewhere in a Nigerian university department. This is the same way Pidgin evolved from mainstream English and a couple of West African dialects. Oya, make una clap for me now... abi I no try? I no chop my school fees now. haba! 2 Likes 1 Share |

Perhaps of Hausa origin [1] Adulterated or pidgin English. Perhaps Of Niger-Delta (South-South Nigeria) origin. Perhaps of Arab origin (wahala, meaning a terrible mess) transmuted into Hausa, before dispersal into the Nigerian pidgin lexicon. Noun Edit wahala trouble; suffering; problem; ill-fate https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/wahala Adulterated and more serious form of palaver |

Proudlyngwa: Gr8 stuff @proudlyngwa. Your name even sounds like 'linguistic' and you sound like a linguistic expert. |

Freelanswer: Cheers, Just as you rightly said. Language evolves. The problem I have with pidgin english, is that it has no rules. Since we are a product of culture and language is the major component of culture, it has negative impact on our behavior. As for the linguistics part, I try my best to be a phrasologist. |
