* Allegation Laughable, Says Ondo State Government

The last may not have been heard of the gov­ernorship primary of the Peoples Dem­ocratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, which was won by Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a for­mer Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state.

Jegede, who was the governorship candidate of the PDP in the 2016 gover­norship election in the state, polled 888 votes to defeat his closest rival and incumbent deputy governor of the state, Agboola Ajayi, who garnered 657 votes, and other seven as­pirants.

While Jegede has been a long time member of the PDP, financing it after the exit of Olusegun Mimiko, a former governor of the state, Ajayi, joined the party a month ago from the All Pro­gressives Congress (APC), the ruling party in the state.

With the election, Jegede will slug it out with Gover­nor Oluwarotimi Akeredo­lu, candidate of the APC, in the October 10 governorship election, an epic rematch of the 2016 governorship elec­tion.

Speaking with our cor­respondent on Monday, a credible source in the party said Jegede got the upper hand in the primary because his campaign was allegedly funded by Governor Ak­eredolu who did not want his estranged deputy to emerge as the PDP governorship candidate.

Our source also claimed that while Akeredolu gave Jegede the sum of N150 mil­lion, other aspirants also re­ceived N50 million largesse to bankroll their campaign.

He also claimed that Gov­ernor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State also financed Jegede’s campaign.

“Yes, Jegede won the pri­mary but I can tell you some external influences assisted him.

“We got information that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who did not want the deputy governor to emerge as the winner of the PDP primary, supported him with N150 million.

“Jegede also got support from others, too, including Governor Seyi Makinde.

“He also received finan­cial support from a former PDP presidential candidate, unlike Agboola Ajayi who solely funded his campaign.

“All this funding went a long way because it was an indirect primary which in­volved delegates.

“Maybe he wouldn’t have won if it was direct primary which involves all registered members of the party,” he said.

Reacting to the claim, Donald Ojogo, the Ondo State Commissioner for Informa­tion, described it as laughable.

He added that while they knew those behind the false claims, the state government won’t share in their self-in­flicted pains.

“It's just laughable. For those whose self-made motivations may overrun the runway, they look for excuses whenever they are faced with challeng­es".

“We know them. We sym­pathise with them. We won’t share in their pains because the pains are self-inflicted,” he said.

Also speaking, Abayomi Ayepitan, a PDP chieftain in Ondo State, said the claim that Jegede won the primary because his campaign was funded was false.

He said stakeholders in the party wanted Jegede to emerge the candidate as they saw him as a stronger chal­lenger to Akeredolu in the governorship election than Ajayi.

“There is no way Ajayi could have defeated Jegede in the primary. Jegede has been single-handedly fund­ing Ondo PDP since the de­parture of Mimiko. So, the people sympathized with him and wanted him to win.

“As for Ajayi, how can you join a party less than three weeks and you want to pick the governorship ticket?

“You entered a room and saw a bowl of food and you quickly brought out your spoon to eat it. Did you both­er to find out how the food got there?

“Some people are com­paring it to what happened in Edo where Governor God­win Obaseki joined the PDP a few days to the primary and picked the ticket. That it hap­pened in Edo doesn’t mean it will happen in Ondo. Edo is not Ondo,” he said.

Same time we all know Eyitayo will keep contesting till he wins. Bankrolled or not, it will suffice to say that Eyitayo has built a formidable fan base but Agbola would have beaten his boss hands-down with all the sentiments gathered.

The only time Koro had an upperhand was when he contested against Fashola, he was nowhere near JK popularity in 2015 because of JK performance in 2011 not to talk of Doherty that could hardly even win his ward in any elections.
