National Assembly To Pass N10,500 Minimum Wage by mrinfo(m): 12:10am On Feb 10, 2011
After the first reading of the National Minimum Wage amendment bill yesterday, the House of Representatives pledged a rapid delivery of the new law that will enforce the N10,500 pay rise announced by the government last year.

With two more readings, that will include committee considerations and plenary approvals, the proposal sent in by President Goodluck Jonathan after tense negotiation with the Labour, will soon be law, allowing civil servants to be paid N18,000 minimum.

The Deputy Speaker, Usman Nafada, said the processes, normally stretching through 24 weeks at the least, will be finalised “soon enough” to allow for presidential assent before current legislative session ends in May. “We have done it before and we will do it again,” Mr. Nafada revealed this at a meeting he had with the leaders of Labour Congress and other affiliate groups , shortly after the bill’s first reading on Tuesday. “It will be passed before the end of their tenure, not on the day of their leaving, but about one or two months away to allow the president enough time sign it,” he said. The Labour officials said they came to appreciate the legislators for giving attention to the bill and to lobby for more commitment.

The new wage benchmark has formed a significant rallying point for Mr. Jonathan’s administration as the president presses for wide political support from public and private sector workers alike, ahead of April general elections. A prolonged negotiation that forced the amount down from the N52,000, NLC insisted on before.

Addressing the lawmakers yesterday, NLC, led by its president, Omar Abdulwaheed, said workers are a “patient” bulk, and are thankful to the lawmakers for their expeditious attention to the bill. “We want to thank the House very much for the commitment it has shown so far to get this bill passed,” he said. He however tasked the members to accelerate the passage of the bill, well awaited by workers.

N18,000 is still a paltry sum for the Nigerian worker.

This highly preposterous. These lawmakers are wicked and mean. Why can't they slash their fat allowances and add that to the 10500 to make life more comfortable for the common man? 18k is so small not to mention 10,500.

@Op
the bold is in addition to the existing N7,500 which gives a total of N18k.

Grammar definitely is not the Op's language.

if our president can forcefully forgive ribadu and brought him back forcing the law courts and the nigerian police to stay away from all ribadu related cases, can't he say a thing about the welfare of the workers and it will begin to happen.
our pdp and president has nothing to offer.

A time will come in this country, when the properties of these NASS members, up to their shoe laces will be sold to recover every kobo they have stolen through illegal allowances.
Imagine 6 months 4 fed. civil workers N18,000.
If it is theirs, they will approve it in 1 SITTING by calling it a "MATTER OF URGENT NATIONAL IMPORTANCE".
Hissssssssssssss!
Re: National Assembly To Pass N10,500 Minimum Wage by mrinfo(m): 1:36am On Feb 12, 2011
nothin wrong with the grammar. The amount being added is 10,500 thus that is the pay rise which when added to the current existing 7,500 wage becomes 18,000.
Re: National Assembly To Pass N10,500 Minimum Wage by Ikengawo: 2:11am On Feb 12, 2011
you guys don't know what a minimum wage is.

a minimum wage is the government saying that paying anyone BELOW this rate is criminal, so of course it's going to be low, its the BARE MINIMUM you're allowed to pay someone

does that mean government workers make minimum wage? no
does that mean the average nigerian is supposed to live off minimum wage? no
does the government control what private parties pay their employees? no.

Also, the FEDERAL minimum wage is a benchmark for STATE minimum wages, a simple way of making sure the STATES don't set their rate below that set number.

even at 18,500 it is still poverty wage. we have all it takes to pay 10 times that amount. consider a country like the uk that pay their citizens unemplyment benefits. the last time i converted it to naira it was nearly 80k per month! can you imagine somebody not working and yet collecting 80k in a month while workers in this country get paid peanuts for sweating day and night on a job? what do our so-called leaders say about this?
