Nigeria: Lagos Will be Leading Referal Centre for Kidney - Fashola

2 December 2010

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on has declared that Lagos would become the leading referral centre for kidney, heart transplant and all kidney related diseases early next year.
[
Fashola who spoke when he received participants in the Kidney Rejoice Health Walk at the open fields of Lagos House, Alausa Ikeja said this would be possible from the end of the first quarter of next year when work is completed on the Specialist Hospital being constructed in Gbagada, adding that the staff and consultants that would manage the facility are being recruited
.

The governor explained that there is a lot of work going on there at the moment adding that the future lies there for all medical students, and doctors and nurses in the State.

"We know that you have the capacity. We also want to bring back as many of our expert doctors, nurses who have left the country as a result of frustration.

"We are spending a considerable amount of money sponsoring people abroad to United States, United Kingdom and India for kidney transplant and replacement.

"We have also noticed that they are going to environments where their families are not immediately around them. They are also taking food after surgery that is not what they may have wanted to eat which contributes substantially to the healing process.

"We also see that it is our economy that is losing and that is why our government has decided that it will locate the kidney and heart transplant facility in Lagos and that is exactly what is going on now at Gbagada", the governor said.

Fashola reiterated that it is the belief of the administration that such a first class facility is the best asset that it can give to its nurses and doctors because they have the skills but only need an opportunity to practice the skills.

While commending Nollywood artistes who also participated in the Health Walk, for spreading positive messages in millions of homes through their films, Governor Fashola urged them to see it as an opportunity to work with the Ministry of Health to see the content of the kidney, hypertension and diabetes screening programme which the government has committed to in the last three years.

He said the programme has screened thousands of patients across the State giving treatment where necessary but using advocacy as the most powerful tool that can help prevent the two main diseases or make it manageable when contracted.

"There is no reason why a diabetes patient should not live a useful, active and normal life if the right management therapy is put in place. Some of the things that we consider as being status significance are in fact things that hurt us, Governor Fashola said.

He called on the Nollywood artistes to consider producing what he called a docu-drama that would help in strengthening the advocacy on the need to exercise regularly, moderation in the kind of food people eat, saying such a production in English, Yoruba, Hausa and Pidgin would go a long way in sensitizing the people.

He promised that the state would provide some assistance to support the production of the docu-drama, adding that this represents one of the ways they can help to spread the message about why people should change some of the life choices they make.

The governor also advised against the use of bleaching creams saying the black skin has been particularly adapted to suit where Africans are located., "We should not try to be anybody else", he advised.

Governor Fashola said in recognition of these health problems which are fast becoming a global problem, his administration is building parks and sports centres to allow the people live an active life.

He also cautioned against the conversion of pedestrian walkways into markets, stressing that Lagos is definitive about building new roads that have walkways as it would engender the culture of people taking a walk in their neighbourhoods.

A Platinum Humanity Award was presented to Governor Fashola by the coordinator of the Kidney Rejoice programme through the President of the Campaign for Democracy, Dr (Mrs.)Joe Okei Odumakin.

Speaking on the award Dr Okei- Odumakin said governor Fashola was the first Governor in Nigeria that she would be presenting an award to.

She described governor Fashola as action Governor as this is evident from what anyone who takes a trip round Lagos would observe as "action speaks louder than words".

Awards were also presented to MTN, Indomie Noodle, Dr. Joe Okei Odumakin and Dr. Adeyinka Adeshope.

It's quiet unfortunate than folks get on NL to pass judgment, but they don't spend not even a second on the state's activities or even bother to at least go to the stat's website to eradictae at least a little ignorance on their part.

Thanks for your commendation but i will prefer your involvementMy strategy is too get to know the people in charge, know there scdeule and the best way to get their attention, what presentation most appeals to them. Thankfully the Governor of borno has commisioned a kideny center doctors are still undergoing training, 1 transplant was performed there for trials. You can get invloved by getting in touch with people who can do something and instead of just attacking them find a way to get through to them. I have not gotten 1/10th of what i want but i know i am in the right direction, first step is getting their ears and in some cases getting them to pay for someones treatment. The kidney center bill got to second reading (this we achieved by paying some advocacy visits to member we knew who had a family member suffering from kidney failure or who had lost a family member/ prominent member of thier constituency to kidney failurwe but didnt get passed probbably because we didnt start advocacy on time. you can write to your lawmakers on this issue if every constituent bombarded them with letters on the same issue it will move faster
my involvement is guaranteed. tell me the time and place and i am in there like thong inbetween gluteus maximus

^^^ How do you do that?

I ask this again because you say you have been able to meet up with these people. Is it possible that one needs to probably up strategy or something this time around? What contacts do you have available to you? Can we get more folks abroad involved or something? How do we do it? How does one, in Nigeria push to have, those in charge, not just make promises after promises, but actually DELIVER ON THOSE PROMISES for the good of the people, and the nation in the end?
Thats why its called advocacy, advocacy is to contiually and persistantly ask for something till it gets done. It can be fustrating but still something should be done and i sleep better at night when i know that i do the little i can. If you have a better strategy you can start something on your end.

KIDNEY PROBLEM: Fashola to the rescue

He has prayed and is still praying. That his wife will make it through this traumatic phase. And now the solution seems nearer.
After two months of writing the Lagos State government on the plight of his wife, Premier Music A & R manager, Lanre Fakeye a. k. a Shakomended has been referred to St Nicholas Hospital Lagos to receive treatment for his wife on the bill of the state. The covering letter states that Tomilayo, his 27-year-old wife, should be tested all over again.

Well my thing is so many promises have been made, and so many claims of implementation since the last election. We know it is election time again and many of the same will make the same set of promises this year again. I do not know how to get to those in charge from here, except picking up the phone to call or sending emails to addresses I find on government websites(99.9% of which are not replied). More times than not, phone numbers no dey work, and many of them do not have access to email or maybe do not care for them much.

What I am saying is what ways do you know that are effective so those of us out here can use that to get our voices heard. It will be a terrible shame, if after another year, you come on here posting pictures of people looking for money to LEAVE THE COUNTRY for care they could get in the country if only we tried harder to get our leaders to do what they ought to do for us.

his own personal money or tax payer's money? why?
shouldn't that be the work of philanthropist/charity organizations? why the state?
Re: Gov. Fashola Finances treatment of Ailing Nollywood Actor, Ifeanyi Dike by Kobojunkie: 4:47pm On Feb 11, 2011
^^^ Good question.

We should also ask our Government if it uses Tax money or personal money during campaigns cause it seems these officials are using, not just the people's time but also our money for their personal gain.  Anyways, I no wan derail the thread.

Obviously, the private folks are not doing anything to help and it's definitely not prudent for the state to sit around and do nothing to help Lagosians in need.

I am not asking you of YOU or How it makes YOU FEEL. I am asking you what you have discovered works since you claim you do this a lot. You must have learnt in all your time what WORKS and what doesn't? What I am asking is that you share this with those of us who have been unable to make headway in a lot so that we do not come back at the end of this year, disappointed again. At the end of the day, this is not about YOU or I but about a whole nation, and people who deserve better.

If you have contact information, phone numbers, email address, Twitter, Facebook access, Home Addresses of some of those in leadership or maybe the Godfathers-in- the-back who matter and can help, please share it so that those of us who are still searching can have access to same and probably make a louder noise this year than we have been able to in previous years.

Well, I am still on finding out the HOW of solving the problem. The way I see it, those of you(those who claim to be concerned and wanting to do something about it all) out in Nigeria ought to be telling us how, where to go, who to contact, to help YOU get results.

Many of us out here already have our immediate environments HERE. Adding Nigeria to the equation is harder than many think. We do not have addresses, emails, phone numbers etc to contact to complain or get our voices heard. We DEPEND on the information we get from Nigerians on ground and if there are not many out there who can, by this time, be able to inform us of where to go with our concerns, what good can we do but continue to ask? And I find it hard to believe that people don't get that at all.
