Ekiti students want federal varsity relocated to Ikole-Ekiti

From Muyiwa Adeyemi, Ado-Ekiti

THE Federation of Ekiti State Students' Union (FESSU) on Tuesday issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, to make fresh recommendations to the Federal Government affirming the location of the proposed Federal University in Ikole-Ekiti.

FESSU maintained that it is the only way lasting peace can be restored in the state and avert communal clash between the two communities involved.

A statement signed by the National President of FESSU, Mr. Sunday Asefon and made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Tuesday, queried the rationale behind the sudden change of mind by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on where the university should be sited.

Cautioning President Goodluck Jonathan against politicising the location of the university to avert crisis in the state, FESSU condemned the sudden change of position by the Federal Government on the issue barely two months after the choice of Ikole-Ekiti was ratified.

It expressed solidarity with the people of Ikole-Ekiti over their agitation that the location of the university should remain in their domain.

FESSU condemned two Abuja-based politicians for allegedly using their connections with Aso Villa to thwart the collective efforts of the state, advising the personalities to stop sowing the seeds of discord among communities in the state.

FESSU also condemned the alleged killing of five protesters by the police in the town last Thursday during a protest against the relocation of the university, calling on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, to probe the alleged killing and bring the perpetrators to book.
