Presidency: ACN lied .
Monday, 28 February 2011 00:00 Nigerian Compass

THIRTY-THREE days to the general elections, the battle for supremacy between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) deepened yesterday.

While the PDP described the story that the Presidency had budgetted N2.9 billion to ‘capture’ the South-West in April as a figment of the imagination of the opposition party, the Presidency declared that the report was “totally false, malicious and repugnant”.

Also referring to the statement credited to former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that President Goodluck Jonathan was a traitor, liar and drunkard, the PDP said it was not surprised that such an abusive language would come from Tinubu who is not sure “whether his real father is either Yekini Ogunlere, Ogunmodede (from Iresi) or Tinubu (from Iragbiji)”.

The Presidency statement, signed by presidential spokesperson, Ima Niboro, noted that the “entire report is false, malicious, repugnant and has no factual basis and its contents are a product of the mischief-driven imagination of its authors”.

He noted that the President, in an all-out effort to win the hearts and minds of Nigerians in the traditional and politically-correct manner, has been busy touring all the states of the federation, including the South-West, adding that Jonathan does not need to resort to any underhand tactics to win the April 9 presidential election.

Said Niboro: “The President and his supporters across the country are working extremely hard to achieve success in the elections in an indisputable and transparent manner. As he continues to show by word and action, President Jonathan remains fully committed to free, fair and credible elections in April. His being a candidate in the elections has not affected this commitment in any way.

“The tumultuous crowds that have attended the Jonathan/Sambo Campaign rallies across the country and the increasing endorsements of the ticket by other political parties, royal fathers and interest groups clearly point to the success of the President’s untiring campaign to convince Nigerians to give him a fresh mandate for four years.

“The President is also a firm believer in the doctrine of separation of powers and the rule of law. He is fully committed to upholding the independence of the judiciary at all times and will never be part of any conspiracy to misuse security agencies for partisan political purposes or impugn the integrity of the judiciary for private ends.”

Minister of Defence, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN), also debunked the allegation that the PDP had budgetted N2.9 billion to ‘capture’ the South-West in the next election.

For referring to Jonathan as “a drunkard and liar,” Kayode said Tinubu has shown that he has no respect for the highest office in the land.

The minister, who was in Akure, the Ondo State capital, to prepare for the presidential campaign visit fixed for Wednesday, said the ACN has no presidential candidate that can match Jonathan in any election.

He said the South-West people “are literate, enlightened and know who best to vote for during the April election and they don’t need Tinubu and his ilk to tell them who to vote for.”

“The PDP has no plan of using state or private fund to forcefully win the South-West as the people of the region know the best thing for them and would vote for Goodluck Jonathan.

“It is not true at all, it is a bloody lie because we do not intend to capture and the issue of capturing the area does not arise as the PDP is deeply rooted in the region and will come out victorious in the next election, the minister added”.

According to him, the President had, in the last few months, given purposeful leadership to the country and put the nation on a strong footing for development.

Kayode said Jonathan would be judged, based on what he had been able to do for the country since becoming the president on May 6, 2010.

His words: “There are many things we can talk about as far as President Goodluck Jonathan is concerned that his co-contestants do not have. He rose from the ranks and became the President, so he has garnered enough experience needed to lead a country like Nigeria.

“He has touched various sectors of the society like education, infrastructure, power and so on and we can now see that the country is working. It is only that he is not a President who believes in media hype; he is a silent achiever”.

The minister noted that Jonathan would not only win in the South-West but would also win in other parts of the country as the party had been running an effective campaign throughout the country.

The Ekiti State chapter of the party also described Tinubu as a politician who will soon fall because of his pride.

State Chairman of the party, Chief Bola Olu-Ojo, said: “Obviously, that fake personality called Bola Tinubu must have taken an overdose of whatever he takes for him to have said that.”

Olu-Ojo, who urged Jonathan not to be taken aback by such comments from Tinubu and his ilk, noted that “Omo ti enikan o bi (a man who is not born by anyone) normally sees everyone in the same light as himself and won’t mind pulling down other people fathers’ houses.”

He lamented what politics has foisted on the highly-principled Yoruba people, saying: “Were it not for what politics has turned our society into, characters like Bola Tinubu that no one is sure whether his real father is either Yekini Ogunlere, Ogunmodede (from Iresi) or Tinubu (from Iragbiji) won’t be mounting the podium to throw verbal darts at the President of his own country.

“We do not blame Tinubu but the systemic rot that allows such an element to have access to such a dizzying amount of money. It is trite to say that when big money misses its way into the hands of bad men, the society is in peril. But definitely, Yorubaland will be saved from this congregation of rascals, who have used their ill-gotten wealth to buy their ways into power.”

While describing Tinubu as one of the greatest threats to democracy in the country, Olu-Ojo said: “Who is a traitor between President Jonathan, who was a deputy governor for over six years and stood by his boss, Chief Dieprieye Alamieyeseigha, till the end or Tinubu, who rode on the back of Afenifere to become governor only for him to destroy the organisation and forced its leaders like Papa Abraham Adesanya, Chief Ganiyu Dawodu, Chief Olu Falae and others out of the Alliance for Democracy (AD)?

“Who is a power drunk between Tinubu, who for eight years ruled Lagos State like a fiefdom, with three deputies and has refused to allow his successor, Babatunde Fashola, to function independently and President Jonathan, who, as a President, does not interfere in the running of his home state, Bayelsa?

“And between Tinubu, who snatched Engr. Funsho Williams’ mandate only for him (Williams) to be murdered in the cruelest manner and President Jonathan, who never acceded to the pressure to take over power when his boss, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, was bed-ridden, who is a traitor?

“The house of fraud built for the ACN by Justice Isa Ayo Salami and his cohorts in the appellate court will fall like a pack of cards and then, we will all see where Tinubu will hide his face.”

Also, the Osun State chapter of the PDP declared that it was determined to expose ACN lies which, it said, would put an end to the party’s politics of deceit and blackmail in the South-West.

A statement by the Acting Chairman of the party in the state, Otunba Sunday Ojo-Williams wondered why the ACN had turned itself into the public relations officer of Justice Salami in the current efforts at probing his relationship with certain persons in the ACN.

The party asked the ACN and its newspaper men to let Justice Salami defend himself on all these allegations stressing that after all, “he had been granting press interviews of recent.”

The PDP added that it was surprising that Tinubu had also ordered his media empire to commence a total war on the State Security Service (SSS) for reportedly seeking the call logs of Justice Salami from the MTN.

It wondered why ACN leaders became jittery over this simple security demands, if indeed they never had any deals with Justice Salami on phone on the Osun and Ekiti governorship cases.

The PDP urged security agencies not to be deterred by the campaign of blackmail and intimidation, “which are the normal strategy of the Tinubu group whenever they are caught red-handed and are about to be brought to book.”

While appealing to the media not to join Tinubu in his designs to arm-twist the law, the PDP noted that it was confident that its on-going efforts would help rid the judiciary of charlatans wearing the gab of heroes.

The PDP also called on security agencies to caution the ACN spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, for “issuing open threats to national security over the raging controversy on the Osun and Ekiti governorship appeal verdicts.”

Mohammed had, last week, promised well sustained war if the verdicts in Osun and Ekiti were reversed over allegations of underhand dealings by the Justices who handled them just as he hinted that telephone contacts with Justice Ayo Salami were for social engagements.

Said Ojo-Williams: “Only in Nigeria can someone be accused of an offence, yet the offender continues to huff, puff and issue threats without any consequence. Perverting the course of justice is a high crime and the punishment must fit the crime.

“While judicial officers are not expected to live reclusive lives because of their calling, it is ludicrous of Lai Mohammed to try to suggest that the calls and text messages they exchanged with Justice Ayo Salami and his agent, Tunji Ijaya, at unholy hours of the day, were social in nature.

“Is Lai Mohammed saying that Ayo Salami and his agent, Tunji Ijaya, were extended invitations to social gatherings very close to the dates that judgements were delivered in the Osun and Ekiti appeal matters, as shown in the intensity of the three-way communication which increased around those periods?

“Could they have been inviting Justice Adamu Jauro to “Owambes” too? Did they have their own version of Mike Newell’s 1994 film, ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’, close to the delivery of judgements?

“Were those phone numbers registered in the name of Lagos State Government given out to musicians to persuade Ayo Salami to attend their gigs? Did Mohammed Raufu Lai (aka Lai Mohammed) call Salami to come over to a naming ceremony? Of who?”

Also, the Society for Rule of Law in Nigeria (SRLN), a non-governmental organisation, has raised the alarm of plans by the ACN and Tinubu to wage media war against the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, with a view to saving Salami.

The group, in a statement by its Coordinator, Comrade Chima Ubeku, alleged that Justice Salami, alongside some ACN chieftains and lawyers met in Lagos last week to review the controversies over the Appeal Court judgements on Osun and Ekiti states, and resolved that the ACN propaganda machinery, which went to bed after the judgements, must go to work immediately.

Ubeku also alleged that a plot to embarrass the CJN, using the House of Representatives, was hatched with a member of the House of Representatives, who is a principal officer, as the chief executioner of the plot.

The statement reads in part: “We wish to alert the public on another round of media war being planned against the CJN by the ACN and its men in the appellate court. The plot is stemmed from the failure of propaganda war unleashed on the CJN at the wake of the rumoured elevation of Justice Salami to the Supreme Court and the need to stall the impending probe of the embattled appellate court president.

“Also, the revelation of telephone conversations among Tinubu, ACN lawyers and Justice Salami was also said to have shocked the camp of the former governor, prompting the emergency meeting where it was resolved that the situation can only be redeemed through roforofo fight.

“A principal officer in the House of Representatives, who also attended the meeting, was mandated to coordinate a probe of the CJN, while the propaganda machinery, which was upbraided for going to sleep after the Ekiti and Osun states judgements, was re-oiled and mandated to get cracking.

“The propaganda team is expected to come up with ‘stories’ aimed at discrediting Justice Katsina-Alu and blackmailing President Goodluck Jonathan, ascribing roles to them in the Ekiti and Osun state judgement controversies”.

While reiterating its call for the probe of Justice Salami’s recent outburst, the group said: “If the President of the Court of Appeal does not trust most of his colleagues as to empanel them in the election petition cases, what is the fate of the common man who regards the judiciary as the last hope?

“Justice Salami must also explain his three-hour secret meeting with the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, recently. If the visit was official, why was it kept out of public glare?”

The Action Congress of Nigeria and the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties on Sunday warned the Peoples Democratic Party not to send wrong signals to Nigerian youths that there were good rewards for corruption.

The ACN’s warning came on the heels of Saturday’s grand reception organised by the PDP for its former Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Olabode George, on his release from a two-year jail term.

George was jailed for abuse of office, contract splitting and disobedience to lawful order.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the ACN said the PDP‘s action was a wrong signal to Nigerian youths. The ACN said it was akin to telling Nigerian youths that public officers could steal or mismanage public funds and be treated like heros.

“There is nothing wrong in rehabilitating a prisoner. But turning an occasion that calls for penitence and soberness to a carnival of sorts is a disservice to Nigeria, and a clear signal that the wobbly anti-corruption war of the Goodluck Jonathan administration is finally dead. It also ridicules Nigeria in the eyes of the world,” it said.

The ACN said George was jailed for stealing money meant for port management and development, not for his political beliefs.

“Let us remind Nigerians that partly because of Bode George‘s grand larceny, it now takes five times the number of time it should take to clear a container; while the Apapa port can hardly handle some ocean-growing vessels bringing in imported fuel, thus heightening the possibility of fuel scarcity.

“This is the man for whom a party (PDP) seeking the votes of Nigerians in April‘s general elections pulled all the stops to give a hero‘s welcome from Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison. This is the man whom serving ministers of a government that is supposed to be fighting corruption besieged Lagos to welcome.

“This is the man for whom the President‘s campaign coordinator for the South-West, Governor Gbenga Daniel - apparently standing in for his boss – turned up in Lagos with fanfare to receive. Nowhere in the world is this kind of action possible, except in Nigeria. And no party is capable of this theatre of the absurd except the PDP,” the party said.

In a separate statement, the CNPP expressed surprise at the celebration of George’s release from jail. In the statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, the CNPP said it was outraged over “the obscene celebration of George, an ex-convict in Lagos on Saturday, by eminent citizens among whom were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Governor Gbenga Daniel (Ogun State), ex-governors and two serving ministers.”

The CNPP said it was at a loss on where to locate the Jonathan administration’s anti-graft crusade when the President delegated the Minister of Defence, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, to represent him at the ‘obscene’ celebration.

CNPP said, ”President Jonathan from all intents and purposes by this act has failed woefully to defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a constitution which frowns against corruption, failed to show leadership and questioned the sincerity of his commitment to war against corruption.

“Accordingly, we are appalled that the president of our dear country can openly, without prejudice to his oath of office, celebrate a man who was convicted on a 163-count criminal charge bearing on abuse of public trust, contract splitting and financial misappropriation to the tune of N100bn. What lessons or legacies are we bequeathing to future generations, when we are celebrating a man from prison not for political charges but criminal charges?”

meanwhile, all pdp can do is engage in area boy name calling

Response is positive and reaction is negative
ACN responded in a positive way
PDP reacted in a negative way,

Is it so difficult to see that PDP is a threat to naija?
