The purpose of mentioning Mary in prayers is for intercession, same with other saints. when you have problems you call your pastor to pray for you, you are doing the same thing.
Believe me, any grudge you have against catholics are mostly misconceptions.

Was it not through the intercession of Mary that Jesus performed his first miracle at the Wedding at Cana even though his time was not yet ripe?

Have you ever asked a favour from your father through your mother? Is the result not always likely to be more favorable?

Please devote your strength to serving your God and stop wasting your strength and time trying to discredit any church or whatever.
