NIGERIAN POLICE FIRE TEAR GAS IN TENSE CITY AHEAD OF RALLY

Police fired gunshots and tear gas on Monday to disperse a tense crowd that gathered near the site of a leading opposition candidate's election rally in the volatile Nigerian city of Jos.

A number of what appeared to be wounded people were also being taken in the direction of a hospital by police in the city in central Nigeria, an AFP correspondent reported.

Crowds of people, mainly youths, had gathered in the road leading to the campaign venue when police fired gunshots in the air to disperse them.

It was unclear whether the candidate, ex-military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, would go ahead with the rally.

Police commissioner Abdulrahman Akano said two different groups of youths supporting Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan gathered in the road, leading authorities to intervene.

"We didn't allow the fight," he told AFP. "They were gathering , One or two canisters of tear gas had to be fired."

He said he was not aware of any injuries or police firing into the air. There had been no arrests.

Tensions have flared in the country ahead of the April vote, with a number of political meetings targeted with bomb attacks.

Jos and its environs have been hit by waves of violence involving Christian and Muslim ethnic groups in recent years that have claimed hundreds of lives.

On Sunday, two men aboard a motorcycle were killed in the city when a bomb they were carrying accidentally exploded.

Plateau state is located in the so-called middle belt between the mainly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south of Africa's most populous country of some 150 million people.

Buhari is a Muslim from the north, while Jonathan, the clear favourite in the election, is a Christian from the southern Niger Delta region. -AFP

shebi police warned this Buhari man not to go ahead with the jos rally because of the tension in the city over what happened during the weekend but as stubborn and as rigid as he is in thinking, he still went ahead. why shouldn't this type of thing happen?

Re: Police Intervened In An Allege Clash Btw Fans Of Buhari And Jonathan In Jos by Wadeoye(m): 6:06pm On Mar 21, 2011
You see, most of the Jonathan supporters are reetards. Are we suggesting that a leader of people should abandon them just because some misguided elements are causing trouble there?

Second, was this the reason given by the CP for asking Buhari to stay away?

If you want to lead people, you must be ready for whatever happens to you in the course of the struggle.

Buhari, like a soilder that he is, was in Jos. He campaigned at the venue of the rally - the crowd was large and there was no violence.

The people causing trouble in Jos are the criminals parading themselves as leaders. It is not impossible that the weekend bomb blast was to scare away Buhari.

Did anyone else notice that the police said there was no violence and only fired tear gas to disperse the crowd?

How did police know that the crowd were members of two different parties? How do we not know they only fired tear gas to disperse the CPC crowd that came for the rally?

I am not making accusations, only asking questions.

The police and the army had no option than to use force to avert what would have been another bloody clash yesterday. I live in Jos, and what I say yesterday was more than just a political rally. Muslim mob came out from bauchi road area marching toward the polo field, a christian dominated area chanting "sai baba" and attacking innocent people on the way. This forced shop owners along enugu road, zaria bye pass, terminus areas to close their shops to avoid being attacked. I personally saw people stabbed with knife being taken in the police van to the hospital. This action made youths from jenta adamu and gada biu areas to also come out to prevent the mob from advancing into the christian territory. The police and the army came inbetween the two groups to prevent a clash.

The clash in jos was not between CPC and PDP supporters as reported by the police. As andrew above has said. the youth from jenta and gada biu came out to defend their areas as buhari's thugs were brandishing all manners of weapons ranging from cutlasses daggers and bottles. i wonder what would have happened if they were not prevented by youths. i live very close to the scene of that incident, you wouldn't believe its a political rally. buhari need to caution his supporters. tell me where buhari has visited and his supporters/thugs did not misbehave?
Re: Police Intervened In An Allege Clash Btw Fans Of Buhari And Jonathan In Jos by SUGURU: 8:34am On Mar 22, 2011
It was clear that the Police conspired to stop Buhari from campaigning as the ruling PDP is using every machinery of govt to frustrate opposition parties especially the CPC. I cannot wait for April to escort the desperado Jonathan back to his Otueke village in Bayelsa.

Too sad to hear that it was neither the PDP supporters that killed and wounded people, but the Nigeria Police, paid to protect these lives. What a shame for mischief makers and supporters.
