Shari’ah states seek constitutional amendment for rights of Muslims

Adamu Suleiman, 26/03/2011 01:50:00

The 5th National Conference for Shari’ah implementing states ended yesterday in Sokoto with a call for the amendment of the constitution to address the rights of the muslim population, just as it immediately established a National Council on Shari’ah Implementing States.

It also viewed with utmost concern, the need to extend necessary support to the South-western part of Nigeria in their quest for the actualisation of the Shari’ah legal system in the region.

In its 8-point communiqué signed by Dr.Abubakar Nababa Umar, Permanent Secretary in the state Religious Affairs ministry at the end of the 3- day conference held at the Shukurah-Coral Hotel, Sokoto, it also urged Muslims to unite for a common goal, particularly on Shari’ah implementation in order to achieve the desired peace and unity in the country.

Similarly, the Sharia implementing states in the communiqué made it mandatory for Muslims to actualise the economic foundation of Sharia in addition to criminal issues. They were also called upon to take advantage of the Internet and ICT facilities to ensure the management of information and facilitation of the course of Shari,ah

The open air conference venue which witnessed attendance from 12 official Sharia implementing states of Bauchi, Borno, Niger, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi , Zamfara, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Gombe and Yobe also attracted representatives from Oyo and Lagos states including numerous others yet to officially implement the Sharia system.

However, the conference urged Nigerians to avoid political thuggery and money politics in order to achieve a smooth political dispensation in the country.

I once knew a guy of SW extraction who was denied visa to China. This guy blamed Ndigbo for his rejection by lamenting on how "omo Igbo" spoilt China and her embassy in Lagos cheesy

What we need, in this dear nation of ours, are more Nigerians who are able and ready to apply their critical-thinking skills, no matter how limited, more effectively in detecting the problems in our nation, and essentially helping solve them.

Sharia was formerly introduced in the North in 2000, during the Obasanjo/democratic presidency. Among the Governors who helped introduce and prosecute many under these laws was our departed Yar adua, who served as president for 3 years before his death. Now, Jonathan Goodluck served as the VP to this man who helped introduce Sharia system formerly to our nation, and did not protest when Yar adua renewed Nigeria's Sharia license in 2009.

It is not OK to be bigoted as it robs one of one's ability to link 2 and 2 --- the facts are clear that we got Sharia under a Christian president and even under our present Christian President-- we are still signed up as OIC member state, with no indications that a change is near, and it does not seem to be diminishing but increasing in influence.

This is scary! Yorubas resist this my SW brothers. I know I mock you all at times, but please resist Sharia. Sharia is not for a civilized people, it is a barbaric interpretation that has not been updated since the Medieval Ages.

It is worldwide consensus that Sharia law is a relic of the Middle Ages. What was good back then, it is not good now. The West and Asia have seen that Sharia should be resisted.

Well at least the East does not have to resist Sharia law.

^^^ when women were being violated in public for wearing trousers out in Aba, Abia, and also in Cross river states, only some years ago, did you provide that too as reason against Sharia? Just mentioning  . . . sad

The reason we have such archiac practices is not because of Sharia but the fact that we have leaders who continue to short change the Nigerian people -- allowing  the few to take the law into their hands in the process.

Provide proof for your assertion. And it is widespread consensus that Sharia has no place in this country. Religion shouldn't never mix with politics.

Controversy: Punishment and Equality under Sharia

Marriage and divorce are the most significant aspects of sharia, but criminal law is the most controversial. In sharia, there are categories of offenses: those that are prescribed a specific punishment in the Quran, known as hadd punishments, those that fall under a judge's discretion, and those resolved through a tit-for-tat measure (ie., blood money paid to the family of a murder victim). There are five hadd crimes: unlawful sexual intercourse (sex outside of marriage and adultery), false accusation of unlawful sexual intercourse, wine drinking (sometimes extended to include all alcohol drinking), theft, and highway robbery. Punishments for hadd offenses--flogging, stoning, amputation, exile, or execution--get a significant amount of media attention when they occur. These sentences are not often prescribed, however. "In reality, most Muslim countries do not use traditional classical Islamic punishments," says Ali Mazrui of the Institute of Global Cultural Studies in a Voice of America interview. These punishments remain on the books in some countries but lesser penalties are often considered sufficient.

Despite official reluctance to use hadd punishments, vigilante justice still takes place. Honor killings, murders committed in retaliation for bringing dishonor on one's family, are a worldwide problem. While precise statistics are scarce, the UN estimates thousands of women are killed annually in the name of family honor (National Geographic). Other practices that are woven into the sharia debate, such as female genital mutilation, adolescent marriages, polygamy, and gender-biased inheritance rules, elicit as much controversy. There is significant debate over what the Quran sanctions and what practices were pulled from local customs and predate Islam. Those that seek to eliminate or at least modify these controversial practices cite the religious tenet of tajdid. The concept is one of renewal, where Islamic society must be reformed constantly to keep it in its purest form. "With the passage of time and changing circumstances since traditional classical jurisprudence was founded, people's problems have changed and conversely, there must be new thought to address these changes and events," says Dr. Abdul Fatah Idris, head of the comparative jurisprudence department at Al-Azhar University in Cairo. Though many scholars share this line of thought, there are those who consider the purest form of Islam to be the one practiced in the seventh century.

What law are you talking about?
In a secular country like Nigeria, you want to impose a law that doesnt and can never fit into a section of the country.
There's a law that must be followed or you simply go form your own islamic country.

If anything of that sort happened in Aba, that's a violation of their fundamental human right.

I agree that the topic says Sharia law but you posted a video on woman being whipped in public for wearing a trouser in public, and possibly you are referring to other barbaric acts committed, which are in no way unique to sharia.

Sharia, as I already explained was allowed in under the rule of a Christian President and the many other Christian leaders have allowed it's continuance in much the same way they have allowed other barbaric treatments of people in other parts of the country to continue. There is no need to turn this into yet another useless/bigoted attack on another religion and focus instead on discussing the real issue which remains the leaders that continue to allow the rights of citizens be taken for granted by the minority.
