According to you, they have modern buildings that are in use, its just that the old ones have been abandoned...I understand ur concern, but this situation is still ok if the modern ones are well maintained.

This is the first primary school in Nigeria. The cradle of education in Nigeria.

Its however sad that it has been left unattended to. I do not like posting negative reviews but this is sad. It would cost almost nothing to maintain these buildings.

Anyways What do you think about the first primary school in Nigeria. It was built in 1843 as the Nursery of Infant School which was later renamed as St. Thomas Anglican Nursery and primary school by Rev. Golmer of the Church Missionary Society (CMS).

It is a missionary school and is still in existence till date.

However it has a new and modern building attached but why would they leave the old building to rot away?

What do you think?

I think the problem with our beloved country is that it lacks a proper educational system which will train wonderful leaders of tomorrow who will work to build, develop and maintain social amenities
Most Nigerian Leaders today are good at building new structures but lack the ability to maintain them

You are very funny....why should a dilapidated old building be used in this modern time.... When the state has the resources for erecting a better structure.... No matter how u renovate or refurbish the buildings...it will still not be safe to teach children inside....get it Mr!

Op some of your information is not correct, since am very close to the area mention, we have modern buildings in the school and the school is not totally abandon the way you paint the picture. Moreso, the school is in main Badagry not Topo( as against your spelling Tapo)
It's not about the new buildings. The very first buildings in the premises ought to be given more attention for they are our heritage and would attract tourism.

What are the owners, and old boys doing about the matter?

Plus, as some have said, the school has long since moved to new quarters. Unless they want to renovate the place for actual use as a school, why sink money into fixing up the place WHEN at the end of the day, it won't be used.
Thanks man

Op did you visit the school?
The pictures you shared are those of abandoned buildings that are no more in use. There are other modern buildings, I have been to this school it is not in Topo but Badagry township.

The buildings abandoned here do not match 19th century colonial architecture. They must have been built much later. It is likely that the historic buildings are long gone and these more modern dilapidated ones are being used as placeholders.

Attached is a better rendition of 19th century architecture ( albeit a secondary school - my alma mater St Gregory's Lagos. If you check Holy Child College and CKC Onitsha you will see similar influences)

I don't see any reason why building should be refurbished when it is supposed to be historic!

How do you expect people to come see a 1843 building when it looks like one built in 2012

This Op is a fool.
With a prejudiced mindset.

The old buildings have been replaced with newer and attractive buildings.

The old buildings are no longer in use, yet you kept emphasizing on how bad the old ones are.

People who think this way don't ever forget the past.

Tourism value of the school should also be look at.

It was mentioned at the school is the first primary school in Nigeria.

That is interesting.

Some part of the building should be facelifted and made to serve as touristic monument.

alternatively fix all the building to a modern structure for better study environment.

Maybe it's for the purpose of history. Like Indians leave their historic ruins for modern age to appreciate it.

There's really no need rebuilding it.

We just have senseless idiots in position of power across all levels of government. How could they have watched this historic institution rot away without any sense of responsibility of restoring the image of the school. Very pathetic and sad!

The funny thing is, if you try to refurbish it they will politicize it.
