Over the years, I would come to Nairaland regularly to find educational material especially concerning Africa, Nigeria, and even business, with very solid insight from other readers. However recently I noticed that the intellectual part of Nairaland has dropped.

I hardly see educative material on the front page and I even share some but it's much harder to get them to the front page these days. The users don't seem as cerebral as before.

Is it just me or does anyone share this opinion as well?

Why aren't the mods promoting educative materials to frontpage again? It's mostly entertainment these days undecided

We reason alike.

Nairaland now specialises in promoting mediocrity. High quality educational materials are now in short supply.

Back then, I must confess that I really learnt a lot from this forum but now, some worthless issues are being promoted at the expense of mind opening topics.

It's really sad. Does it mean Nigerians have generally gotten dumber?

You just nailed it.

A society where some set of guys from BBN are termed "celebrities" has a very big problem.

In Nigeria mediocrity is celebrated at the expense of creativity.

I never know Nairaland as educative forum
I though they are just good with tribalism and inconsequential slanderous topics

Poverty don overthrow the land...population wey dey filled with poor minds. But sometimes we need to individually spoonfeed ourselves. Nothing dey last forever; things must change. Life dey dynamic.

Did you say losing?
Nairaland has long lost its intellectual potentials.
Too many uncouth teenagers and illiterates who cannot make a valid and reasonable opinion other than abuse have flooded the forum.
Even the Moderators display absolute stupidity manytimes by the way they are quick to push Ludicrous Topics to front-page.
Often these times, you find some topics on Front-page, and you are forced to ask yourself: Who is More Stupid?: The Poster or the Moderators that brought the post to Front page.
And worse of all, Seun doesn't care... So long as he gets his alerts.

What do you mean by intellectual and educative materials ,are you talking about information that are use in our educational pursuit.
If you are a curious observer, you will know that the world has changed considerably,
Entertainment rules the world right now, people are no longer interested in reading books, the value of education has dropped considerably,a popular hip hop musician ,a dancer or a footballer has high regard than a university proffessor.
Information is education ditto, entertainment, times has changed and I think nairaland is moving along with the new trend..
Nairaland is also the true face of Nigeria.

My annoyance with nairaland is it's inability to give a life ban to tribalists and name callers.
How people throw so much bile and hatred on this forum scares me.
How some people believe they are better than others because of their tribe and religion is so insensitive.
People fail to understand that nobody chose where or what culture or tribe to be born into.
When nairaland and the mods starts looking seriously into this issue, e go make sense
In fact it's more scary for me to read the tribalist comments here than reading about rituals.
My opinion ooo

If you own more than one Nairaland account then you are a big part of the problem. All the posters in this thread have more than one yet will claim otherwise. I have said my own.

Yes! Nairaland is really a robust platform but the kinds of topics some mods do push to front page will just keep you guessing if the forum is really an intellectual one.

I think the moderators have a huge role to play in the quality of the platform. Most topics on the front page aren't supposed to be there

I don't even mean such academic materials. Just general informative material on business, finance, geography or science would suffice

Nairaland is your problem, not Facebook, Instagram etc.

If you go to the right section, you will find intellectual subjects. Otherwise, academic journals might be your better bet.

BTW, how many sites that you have supported have survived as long as NL?

The one that pains me the most are the government paid agents that have multiple Igbo and Yoruba sounding monikers that have flooded the forum, trying to derail every topic into an Igbo versus Yoruba tribal war by hauling insults and threats, the moderators have failed completely to suppress these agents that are degrading the site.

we are saying the same thing, people ain't after information on sciences, geography and finance in a forum as such.
Public forums like nairaland is the educate, entertain and inform and I think it is doing that

The 2 main problems with the site are that 1) The Politics section is an absolute disgrace, infested with unrestrained ethnic bigotry, hatred, and abuse, with no moderating oversight worthy of the name. And 2) The front page is a joke, filled with trashy stories mostly, with little or no intellectual merit or emotional value.

Like I always tell anyone who cares to listen, Nairaland represents the real Nigeria that we fear to admit.

Most Nigerians are hypocrites and bigots - the traits that they cannot openly display. However, Nairaland offers them that faceless platform where they can say it the way it is.

Even Nairaland that does not incorporate any new features year in, year out is a typical example of what's wrong with the country - no new ideas, no innovation.

Every business, including Nairaland, is just a cash cow and their owners don't make room for research and improvement. cheesy cheesy cheesy
