List of Nigeria's IGPs since Independence as Nigerians await appointment of new police chief

-Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, attained the statutory retirement age on Monday, February 1.However, he still remains in office at the time of filing this report as President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to appoint a new IGP.

As Nigerians wait for the president's appointment of a new police boss, Legit.ng lists in the piece all the IGPs Nigeria has had since the 1960s.

1964 to 1999

1. IGP Louis Edet (1964-1966)

2. IGP Kam Salem (1966-1975)

3. IGP Muhammadu Dikko Yusufu (1975-1979)

4. IGP Adamu Suleiman (1979–1981)

5. IGP Sunday Adewusi (1981–1983)

6. IGP Etim Inyang (1985–1986)

7. IGP Muhammadu Gambo-Jimeta (1986–1990)

8. IGP Aliyu Atta (1990–1993)

9. IGP Ibrahim Coomassie (1993–1999),

2000 to 2010

10. IGP Musiliu Smith (1999–2002)

11. IGP Mustafa Adebayo Balogun (2002 – 2005)

12. IGP Sunday Ehindero (2005–2007)

13. IGP Mike Mbama Okiro (2007–2009)

14. IGP Ogbonna Okechukwu Onovo (2009 - 2010)

2010 till date

15. IGP Hafiz Ringim (2010 - 2012)

16. IGP Mohammed Dikko Abubarkar (2012 - 2014)

17. IGP Suleiman Abba (2014 -2015)

18. IGP Solomon E. Arase (2015 - 2016)

19. IGP Ibrahim Kpotun Idris (2016-2019)

20. IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu (2019-Till Date)

Meanwhile, a new report has highlighted some senior police officers who may be considered for the top job as IGP Adamu is set to bow out.

One of the senior officers is Moses Ambakina Jitoboh, as Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of border patrol. It is gathered that Jitoboh's candidacy is being pushed by some influential persons, including former President Goodluck Jonathan. The AIG hails from Bayelsa state.

Nevertheless, the presidency has said President Buhari will not be driven by ethnic sentiments or affiliations in his choice of the next police chief.

Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, made the statement in reaction to agitations and calls from a section of the country that the next IGP should come from the southeast.

Shehu insisted that the president will only appoint someone who will ensure the security of Nigerians is better than what has been recorded.

Nevertheless, the presidency has said President Buhari will not be driven by ethnic sentiments or affiliations in his choice of the next police chief.
As if the Buhari government have ever made any major appointment based on merit before.Bloody bigoted, nepotic clannish, and ethnic supremacist.

"....Buhari’s undoing is his wonted predilection for hierarchising ethnicity, religion and loyalty above competence. Since 1999, no president has obtrusively shown a more nepotistic aspect than Buhari.

It is unarguable that the president arrays the most competence-challenged cabinet ever in the chronicle of governance in Nigeria....As it was in 1984 under General Buhari, so it is in 2016 and 2020 under President Buhari.
https://www.thecable.ng/buharis-legacy-of-recessions

Shehu insisted that the president will only appoint someone who will ensure the security of Nigerians is better than what has been recorded.
So has Buhari provided security for Nigerians? Was it not the same president that ordered the "transmission", "transfusion" & "confusion" IGP-Idris to Benue who never report & insult the office of the presidency by saying "nothing' ll happen to me"? True to his word, the C-in-C never reprimanded the erring police chief. So how will this be different?

Just tell us, you're bidding time to play the nepotic card again. However remember, ....All those who wish you and the country well must mince no words in warning you that Nigeria has become dangerously polarized and risk sliding into crisis on account of your administration’s lopsided appointments which continues to give undue preference to some sections of the country over others....

Nepotism is a form of favoritism which is granted to relatives in various fields, including business, politics, entertainment, sports, religion and other activities. [1][2] The term originated with the assignment of nephews to important positions by Catholic popes and bishops . [3]
Nepotism has been criticized since the ancient times by several philosophers, including
Aristotle, Valluvar , and Confucius. For instance, the ancient Indian philosopher Valluvar condemned nepotism as both evil and unwise
. [4]

Can you explain how emefiele or irabor are related to buhari or you created another definition for nepotism?

"....When Buhari appointed a majority of the service chiefs from a particular region and religion, he and his supporters defended it and claimed that even if all his appointees come from one region and religion in a multicultural, multi-religious and multiethnic nation like Nigeria, it means nothing as long as they are competent. Today, nothing exposes the shallowness and puerility of such appointments."

"Nepotism is the worst form of corruption. It is the mother of all corruption. That was probably why the framers of our constitution stood firmly against it, by enshrining the most-maligned Federal Character provisions at both Federal and State levels.

By the time we lift the lid off the other federal agencies populated by the President’s kinsmen, townsmen and clansmen; more stench is likely to come out..."

So prominent northerners in the likes of Col.Umar Dangiwa(rtd), Col.Abubakar Sa'ad(rtd-current Sultan of Sokoto), Junaid Mohammed, Sheik Ahmed Gumi, Sule Lamido, etc that have repeated cautioned & warned Buhari on the dangers of nepotism are stupid?

It was simple nepotism that made Buhari handed the COAS position to Ibrahim Attahiru because it was under his govt that the equally incompetent last chief redeployed him away from being the OP Lafiya Dole theatre command Why should a president reward incompetency? Simply because of nepotism.

As per who you are, you lots are behind the current agitations that is compounding the woes of this nation by cheering him on with the notorious policy of total nepotism. How can you explain all the pro-northern hausa-fulani appointments that is the hallmark of this government.

Even Tinubu's The Nation editorial have asked Bubu same question. The voice of the people is the voice of God but as you also know, even the good lord loves us all irrespective of our sins.

Jitoboh is no more with Border Patrol, he is now Ag. DIG-in charge, Research and Planning Department.

However, whomever the Presidency will pick is someone that will satisfy the requirements for 2023......

Please, don't ask me the requirements

The truth is that it will be extremely difficult to pick Jitoboh because he is very close to the Jonathans. 2023 is at stake for them.

Buhari is likely to do one of three; and I also gather the IGP is not very close to Galadanchi...
-Extend IGP Adamu's tenure and damn what everyone has to say (as usual)

- Allow DIG Lemu be in-charge for sometime, then elevate his chosen person from the CP-role to AIG.

- Pick Galadanchi.

Jitoboh, I believe is out of their picture.

Even Tinubu's The Nation editorial have asked Bubu same question. The voice of the people is the voice of God but as you also know the good lord loves us all irrespective of our sins.

The above northerners you mentioned are people that have always been against buhari so do you expect them to speak good of him? You simply do not know what nepotism is.is attahiru related to buhari? Is he from katsina? Are they in any way linked or connected? So buhari appointing a northerner from another state is nepotism but gej appointing diezani from bayelsa is ok?

Commonsense demands that since buhari has appointed a southerner as cds,a northerner will head coas.this is the tradition since 1999.one region cannot head both defence and army..
Now onto the choice of attahiru, attahiru is the best man for the job.he was not sacked for corruption but actually prevented corruption and allowed the media to have access to inner workings of the war which incurred the wrath of buratai.this is the same thing that just earned general segun adeniyi demotion last year.do you know that after attahiru was sacked, boko haram killed more people under his successors like gen rodgers? Attahiru was never incompetent.he was never in the cabal of buratai.
I know you wanted buhari to appoint gen adeosun as coas but adeosun is senior to irabor.adeosun is rc 32 same as buratai.irabor is rc 34 and attahiru is rc 35.therefore,adeosun had to retire along with buratai after all he had overstsyed beyond his retirement year.

Finally, premium times have published severally a list of all the appointments by buhari and the south has more appointments.the southwest has the highest number of appointees.ogun state has more appointees than even kano and katsina so my friend, you have nothing to say.

He was ADC to late DSP
ADC to Jonathan as Bayelsa Gov
ADC to Jonathan as VP and later in the earliest years of his Presidency.

He is from Sagbama LGA....So, it is almost impossible they will pick him.

I don't think so because he is only an Acting-DIG and is of the class of 1994 whilst Inuwa, Galadanchi, Umar were recruited same day in 1990.

Kindly go thru that list you'll see why there isnt major transformation in the police, infact its like NTA,no matter the amt of billions donated to them it still remain like 17th century station.

I believe for this nation to move ahead "igbos" must be give the chance in all sensitive areas(bitter truth),its that simple beleive me or not.
Igbos are widely traveled and can incorperate what he learnt in white man land into our force and nation at large.
House/fulani only goes to mecca and will even prefer our police men wear black uniform with baton looking like ancient masquerade.
