Ekiti govt suspends 1,000 civil servants over roles in presidential election •They’re party agents -Govt

NO fewer than 1,000 civil servants in the employ of the Ekiti State government have allegedly been suspended for their various roles during the presidential election, held last Saturday.

A group in the state, Ekiti Positive Forum (EPF), had alleged in a statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti, on Wednesday, that the civil servants were “being victimised for voting for President Goodluck Jonathan in the election.”

The group, in a statement signed by its chairman, Chief David Oke and secretary, Evangelist Gbenga Adekunle, alleged that “no fewer than 1,000 civil servants across the state have been issued with suspension letter in the last two days,” saying that “it is worrisome that a government that was installed through the instrument of the rule of law is now victimising workers, because they were suspected to have voted for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But, while reacting to the allegation, the state Commissioner for Information, Communication, Civic Orientation and Strategy, Mrs Fola Richie-Adewusi, said the workers who were sanctioned by the state government were those that served as political party agents during the election.

Mrs Richie-Adewusi said the suspended workers flouted an order of the state government that no public servant must play politics overtly, adding that the number of the affected workers was not readily available.

According to the commissioner, the disciplinary action affected all culprits in the civil service, irrespective of their political affiliation, adding that it was meant to serve as deterrent to others.

The group charged traditional rulers and other well-meaning citizens of the state to prevail on the state government “to desist from victimising public servants, who were only carrying out their civic responsibilities as prescribed by the laws of the country.”
