PDP Collapses in South West

By LEKE ADESERI, South West Regional Editor

LAGOS—RESULTS of Tuesday’s governorship elections in three South West states of Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun stopped the ambition of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, to control any state in the region.

The big wins of the day for the rival Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, came from Ogun and Oyo States, which had been under PDP’s control in the last four years.

The development was the last straw that broke PDP’s back after they lost Ekiti and Osun states to the ACN through judicial pronouncements.

Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala lost to the ACN’s candidate, Senator Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi, while Senator Ibikunle Amosun will on May 29 take over the governorship of Ogun State from Otunba Gbenga Daniel who has spent the mandatory two terms.

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola is the only governor in the region that was re-elected. He defeated his PDP rival with a margin in excess of one million votes.

Declaring the result, the INEC governorship returning officer for Lagos State, Professor Akinbolawa Akinterinwa, announced that Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola polled 1,509,113 votes while the PDP governorship candidate, Dr. Ade Dosunmu came second with 300,450 votes and Mr. Odulana Olurotimi of the Labour Party, LP, polled 10, 221 to come third in the contest.

In Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the ACN gubernatorial candidate became the governor-elect after polling 377,487 votes to emerge winner.

Gen. Adetunji Olurin (rtd), the PDP governorship candidate, came second with 188,698 votes, his Peoples Party of Nigeria, PPN, counterpart, Mr. Gboyega Isiaka, scored 137,051 votes to place third.

ACN’s winning streak continued to the various Houses of Assembly except in Ondo State where the ruling Labour Party had an impressive showing.

INEC in Osun State, for instance, declared ACN candidates as winners of the House of Assembly election in the 26 constituencies, while the results from Ekiti showed that ACN candidates won all the three re-scheduled senatorial districts seats in the state.

The party equally won the six seats in the Federal constituencies and 24 of the 26 members of the state House of Assembly, while PDP won in the remaining two constituencies.
