Sequel to the gruesome murder of a Nigerian footballer, Kabiru Adewunmi who was killed in Chicago’s Chatham neighbourhood on Tuesday, other Nigerian footballers resident in the town are moving out of the city for fear of being attacked.

Some of them, who are teammates of the slain rising star deserted the city and moved to the North Shore for protection.

Our sister newspaper, the Nigerian Compass on Saturday had reported the story yesterday giving graphic details of the dastardly act.

Chicago police are still searching for the killers of the 16-year-old boy. Adewunmi and his friends were in the 800 block of East 82nd Street Tuesday night when the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m.

One of the several adult caretakers for the soccer players said the boys had been confronted many times in the past.

Tina Hudson-Owodele says the boys passed a group of men, one of whom asked whether they were “those African soccer players.”

“The kids were laughing at them, (the Nigerian teens) didn’t feel good about that, so we said stop talking to them,” Hudson said. “So they did that and they thought that would be OK, and it didn’t turn out OK for them.”
