A man whose wife died when a Nigerian commercial airliner crashed into a crowded neighborhood in that country’s largest city filed a lawsuit in the United States on Thursday that blames the accident, at least in part, on U.S. companies that designed, manufactured and sold the ill-fated plane.

An American attorney filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Chicago on behalf of David Chukwunonso Allison, whose wife, Joy Chiedozie Allison, was on the Dana Air MD-83 that went down in the African nation Sunday afternoon. The crash killed 153 people who were on the plane and an undetermined number of people on the ground.

Among those named in the 56-page lawsuit are Chicago-based Boeing Co., which bought the McDonnell-Douglas manufacturer of the plane, and Connecticut-based engine-maker Pratt & Whitney.

Gary Robb, a Kansas City, Mo.-based aviation attorney who filed the lawsuit for David Allison, said reports of engine failure as the plane approached Lagosm point to the companies’ culpability.

Nigeria’s Aviation Minister Stella Oduah said Wednesday that the flight’s captain radioed Lagos as the aircraft approached and declared an emergency, saying both of the MD-83’s engines had failed. Minutes later, the plane crashed into several buildings.

“That is always incredibly significant information,” Robb said. “Engines do not fail unless something goes dramatically wrong.”

While I don't understand how he came to blame Boeing for the accident, I can see how a person(possibly in mourning) would think to find someone to blame for his loss.

That was quick too. It has been less than a week and already a lawsuit!

I really don't understand,
0. Plane designed by manufacturer and engine designed by someoneelse
1. Plane was "born" in the late eighties or very early nineties
2. Plane has exchanged ownership at least twice
3. Plane has been used and age is now telling on it
4. Plane struck by tragedy
5. One man went all the way back to "0" to sue somebody, it probably would have made even little sense to sue the owners in "2."

Before this matter becomes statute barred families of the victims or those who lost properties should take steps to sue this company soon. Barr. Monday Ubani, current chairman of NBA Ikeja has started collating a list for those interested in a class action. People should be held responsible for their irresponsibilities. And whether we like it or not the lost souls will be crying out for justice. And this may actually bring some sought of closure for the families involved ie when the killers of their loved ones have been made to pay.

And why wont he? Didnt u read what was up there? The plane engines can just fail dramatically except something in the plane was removed before the flight without the knowledge of the pilot. The Mr. Allison has thought as much and has to sue the manufacturers and engineers, Simple.

i actually applaud this idea, the engine and plane makers would be forced to prove that it wasn't as a result of a flaw in design, but due to mismanagement, hence they will also be interested in the findings of the ''black box'' no one would come and pull wool over our eyes on its findings

Shame on you, the man is angered by the untimely death of his wife and for him bringing those responsible for it to justice is the least he can do in memory of his wife. That's what the lawsuit is about, I'm sure you won't think differently if you were in his shoes.

The NCAA is culpable,at least with all the stories that tghe aircraft had a history of air returns and engine failure,it is their duty to have sent in their engineers to take a good look at the engine ang ground it,but I guess they were too lax
