A40:you have to read my post again. i did not say that all the teams that played argentina parked the bus, i only mentioned iran, bosnia, switzerland, and it shows that the defence did not have much to do! for all those who dare to say mascherano was argentina's best player! lol. patronising mascherano just to bring down messi? kai kai. muller scored 1 goal in the knock outs not 2, world cup never tay wey e finish o, haba! na im be say by next month you will increase it to 3, lol. also i said against a 10 man portugal! STRESS- 10 MAN! any 1mbecile can score a hattrick against a 10 man portugal. as for james ive not talked about him alot. he was the star revelation of the tournament but the quarter final is just not good enough too bad for him. no one has ever won a golden ball without passing the quarter final stage! and for the past 20 years or 5 world cups no one ever won the golden ball from the world cup winning team then no one shouted fifa. iam not saying it should be a standard but you guys should stop shouting fifa fifa fifa! as for messi you guys again have decided to set a standard; no one wins the golden ball without scoring a goal in the knock out stages. where did you get that? from the world cup constitution or from the 10 commandments? lol. the golden ball was between muller and messi. i thought muller would win but messi did and iam happy. and then all the 1diots like kempes leave out argentina's super flops like higuain, palacio, aguero,de maria who had to get himself injured and criticize the guy who scored 4 goals and one assist, won 4 man of the match awards, had the highest number of dribbles, created the highest number of goal scoring chances, got the country to the siver medal after flop teams of 98, 2002,2006 and 2010? clap for kempes. |

Here’s why we’re glad he won... 158 Shares Share Tweet +1 Clive RoseNot the trophy Messi wanted to be collecting last night (Photo by Clive Rose/Getty Images) Pre-tournament, many believed it would be Argentina’s defensive frailties that would be their stumbling block in their bid to win the World Cup on Brazilian soil It turned out to be quite the contrary, as Mascherano rolled back the years in his favoured holding midfield role, and even Martin Demichelis looked composed. But you got the distinct impression that Sabella’s only tactical plan was to get solid at the back, and hope that Messi would do something special. And for us, Lionel Messi duly delivered. The Argentine side looked distinctly average in every game they played, and when you look into a little more detail, you notice how much of a positive impact the four time Ballon d’Or winner had at the World Cup: 1. The Messi Factor Lionel Messi dragged his home nation through the group stages by the scruff of the neck; he scored the decisive goal against Bosnia, broke Iranian hearts with a 91st minute winning goal in Belo Horizonte, and then scored a brace against Nigeria in a 3-2 win. Moving into the knockout phase, he produced the only moment of excitement against Switzerland with the assist for Di Maria’s winning goal, and even had a hand in Higuain’s winner against Belgium in the quarters. Messi’s World Cup in numbers 4 Goals 4 Man Of The Match awards 46 Successful dribbles Lionel Messi scored four goals, won four Man of the Match awards, completed 46 successful dribbles, got one assist, and was the best performing player according to WhoScored.com. 2. Adidas The internet conspiracy machine has gone into overdrive churning out another little gem. Apparently, because Adidas sponsor both the Argentine forward and the Golden Ball trophy, this result was a foregone conclusion. But who else could have realistically won the prize? The usual suspects Muller, Robben, Lahm, Rodriguez and Kroos have all been bandied around as potential winners, all of whom are sponsored by Adidas anyway. And, if any of the aforementioned had taken the award ahead of Messi, we’d probably still be discussing it now anyway. Seriously, Robben, who admitted to diving, ahead of Messi? 3. It’s for inspiration, not for goals alone The Golden Ball is given to the best individual player of the World Cup. This is not necessarily down to the amount of goals a player has netted, but how much he inspired his team mates. Messi didn’t just inspire the squad around him, like Maradona in previous tournaments, he inspired the entire Argentine nation. 4. He’s a stunning individual in a team game In a weird way, Messi winning the award is a great compliment to Germany. The Golden Ball celebrates consistent individual inspiration, something Germany didn’t have as such. Joachim Löw’s side are a brilliant team, and you’d struggle to single out one player that deserves praise more than the other. Lahm, Muller, Neuer, Hummels all had a superb tournament, but picking one for this accolade would be a lazy choice. The fact that Germany lost a first team player in Marco Reus just before the tournament, then lost Sami Khedira in the warm up last night, but it had little detrimental effect on their overall performance just shows the unity and squad strength. In contrast, Argentina relied so heavily on Lionel Messi to bail them out, and when he wasn’t quite at his best, very few players stepped up to plate. Think Higuaín missing then target when clear on goal in the final. Without Messi, they would have really struggled just to get out of the group. 5. Five’s the charm It’s not unusual for the Golden Ball to be given to a player that has not won the World Cup; it’s the fifth time in a row now. Uruguay finished fourth in South Africa thanks some shady antics from Luis Suarez, yet Diego Forlan still won the Golden Ball. Zidane won it in 2006 despite sticking the nut on Marco Materazzi in the final. Kahn bagged it the time before that, even though Ronaldo scored 8 goals, yes 8. 6. He handled losing the final with grace He’s just lost the biggest game in football with 8 minutes to go, how would you be feeling? Not much like picking up a trophy from Sepp Blatter and co, we’re sure. But compare it to the snarling way that Argentina reacted to losing the final in 1990. Standing alongside Manuel Neuer with the Golden Glove was one of the most awkward football photoshoot moments in living memory, but Messi handled it with grace. Shaun Botterill - FIFAManuel Neuer & Lionel Messi, and contrasting emotions (Photo by Shaun Botterill - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) He might not have collected the biggest prize in football last night, but who could begrudge him winning recognition for his astounding talent on sport’s biggest stage? dayokanu: bro, it seems you misunderstand me. i never said that messi was the best player of the world cup. winning the golden ball does not always mean being the best player. that is life for you. there is always an argument for and against everyone. in 2010 even though forlan won it, it could have been sneijder or iniesta or villa or casillas, or xavi or even muller. ive been saying this- if it was up to me i'd give the golden ball to thomas muller. besides muller i'd give it to messi. who are the other stand out candidates? robben? no way, a lot of dribbling and dives but messi was ahead of him in everything; goals scored, position reached, head to head! next james- excellent but unluckily he didnt go far enough in the tournament. but for anyone to say that messi should not be in contention, why? the same boring reason of not scoring in the knock out stages as if this rule was engraved in a stone? not fair. you're the star player and best player of your country, you play in the final for the first time in 24 years, score 4 goals and win 4 man of the match awards, and someone says you cannot win the golden ball? not fair. |

As for Maradona, it is a shame to think all he does is open that is mouth and condemn everyone but himself... Like we don't know how he drugged his way... Come to think of it, Maradona had players that were there to help him win the World cup unlike Messi who was literally by himself... --- HIGUAIN (-2) PALACIO (-5) AGUERO (-5) Why was Tevez not picked? |

When Tevez was picked in 2010, how did Messi fare? The same Tevez who didn't score in UEFA competition for over 4 yrs till his goal vs benfica is now the reason Messi under performed? If higuain was dropped same people would be asking why higuain was dropped or aguero 1 Like |

I really hail and respect my fellow cules who devote their time and energy dragging issues with the haters who in my opinion will never agree and succumb to glaring facts. One would wonder where they all were when Argentina were winning. It's just obvious they were all waiting for a time like this.many of them didn't allow us rest when Barca were not doing fine only to disappear Into the thin air when we needed them to give us some explanations when their teams were crushed. Take it or leave it, Messi is just up there with the greats or maybe we should agree that James, muller,Roben et are all beter players than Messi if they will allow us rest. Forca Barca! |

dayokanu: When Tevez was picked in 2010, how did Messi fare?there were 640 outfield players in the world cup. yes messi under performed. his under performance was superb to at least 635 of those players. under performed! lol. i wonder if mikel obi had scored four goals and made 1 assist and nigeria played against germany in that final and got the silver medal 7 mins from time. no be only under perform. the standard used in judging messi is different from the standard used in judging every other player in every corner of the world. |

Na wa oh! --- How can someone judge a player's past history/form to his present form? So Tevez won't have made any difference? --- A Player that scored 19 goals in 31 games for Juventus last season compared to a Palacio who scored 17 goals in 37 games... With tevez upfront, Argentina would have clinched the World Cup on Sunday! |

Tevez: - (During last Season) Even if I score 30 goals this season I don't think I'll stand a chance of being included in Argentina's World Cup squad. That's very clear to me. I don't have to explain anything to the fans. It's not me who has to explain why I'm not playing for Argentina. Sabella is entitled to his decisions. I have to be a grown up person and accept it. It is a shame that People irrespective of how old they are can be so blind and arrogant that they can't settle their differences in other to achieve a common goal... |

Tevez ended his maiden campaign in Italy as Serie A’s third-highest goalscorer en route to helping Juventus claim another league crown scoring 19 goals in 31 games. He had previously won three Premier League crowns during his time in England, split between Manchester United and Manchester City, as well as the Primera Division in his homeland with Boca Juniors—a club who still regard the striker as one of their greatest icons. How on earth would any reasonable coach ignore Tevez? |
