This part doesn't add up. How will unarmed people overpower a police station with officers well armed. Not even a police post, but a divisional headquarters.

Most likely that the police are overwhelmed by the bandits activities and knew handing them to their Ogas (senior police authority) won't yield any result (as they will be later released).

They stylishly gave them to the youths to kill, saying they were overpowered since it's against their code of conduct.
It is possible. The youths might be over 100 and police officers at a station might not be more than 10 in such a remote area.

you really need to go into some hinterlands and villages to see what are regarded as divisional police headquarters.
Most of them are just glorified police posts. Just names , but without enough man power and ammunition to combat crimes and criminals.
Take time too to check out some divisional headquarters in major cities and towns, you will weep for Nigeria.
