At Disguy, If you take the route of expatriate the nysc certificate is not required but then the organisation would have to sort out your work permit and other requirements for your employment. Now expatraites are hired becuse the skill is specialised and scarce so some of the legal requirements for hiring expatriates are that they are understudied by I think 2 employees to ensure skill transfer. Now if you do not have a skill that is scarce, no decent firm will go through the trouble of getting you a work permit when they can just hire an indigene with similar or better skills. Especially when they know you are Nigerian and you wee not hired from another country but are living in Nigeria.

The NYSC is better pursued sooner than later because if one job doesn't demand it, the next job might and you just limit your options. Some firms actually help their employees sort out the NYSC certification, particular when they have a number of employees who may have studied abroad and may not have done it immediately after university.

can anyone tell me (Yemmight, where are you?)whether it is compulsory to pay for the lectures at CIPM? is it possible to self study with the list of books etc. The lectures are costly and you still have to pay for the exams, i think i read somewhere on the CIPM website that lectures are not compulsory. Please can someone, anyone clarify??

I read Business Administration and want to go for my MBA,can some one advice me on the school that does MBA in Human resourcesI live and work in Lagos,so any school that is located too far from Lagos wont do me any good.

You can get materials from the institute and study on ur own. You can also get from your friends and collegues.

I dont think the lectures are so expensive when you compare it to some other professional exams. If you can afford it, please pay and attend lectures.


On the other hand, if you think its expensive you should try 2 study really hard on your own.


I studied 4d part 2 exams on my own and I passed, but I attended lectures 4d other diets and passed too. I would say that it was easier 4 me when I attended lectures than when I studied on my own.

2 things please.

There are lots of different opinions and I think it is the best if you can read about all these and then try to see if you can make out something. I googled the question "diff btw hr & pm" and i have countless of sites which I am still going through. I will advise you do same.

secondly, I just wrote a test for the position of Hr generalist and i am still waiting until employment before knowing what am I to do. I just applied because I want to pursue a career in HR. Is it different from normal HR Manager or less in position. What does it entails functionally?

Will be grateful for your opinion.

thanks for your response.

I have goggled the research topics severally and i dont seem to come up with a clear cut thing.

as for your query, the HR generalist role is lower than the post of an HR manager.an Hr generalist in a company is one that combines all HR functions like performance appraisals,training,recruitment,payroll admn etc.an HR generalist could be a supervisory position but is never a manager, if an HR generalist becomes a manager the title changes to HR-manager.Hope this clarifies?

As for the outcome of the research, i seem to be more confused after reading the site. They are more of saying there is no clear-cut difference and that PM is the old term while Hr is advanced. I am printing all that i researched (about 8 page in ms word), take it home & read to see if I can get something out.

Hoping to share more with & learn more from you & others in the house. Afterall you be experienced mentor wink

I discovered over some time especially during most recruitment exercise that most people do not get short listed for an interview because of how they put their cv together.

well done on all your good work. you were spot on about the level i will have to start at; am about to start Intermidiate II (CIPM)as you said.
I wanted to know if ,apart from the books and study packs, there are any websites tht offer good information on human resources, especially as pertains to Nigeria as i wont have the time (am working)to attend lectures and plan to study on my own. Again many thanks
