[size=15pt]Imo Speaker impeached, nine others suspended[/size]

Imo State lawmakers have impeached Speaker Goodluck Opiah and suspended nine other colleagues, in what seems the beginning of the clearing out of the loyalists of Ikedi Ohakim, who on April 26 lost the Governorship ballot to Rochas Okorocha, who was sworn in on Sunday.

Amaechi Nwoha was on Tuesday elected to replace Opiah, and Ifeanyi Agwu was directed to oversee the office of Deputy Speaker, which was occupied by Jonas Okeke, one of those suspended.

Before the commencement of legislative business, 14 of the 27 members of the Assembly had held an executive session where they resolved to remove Opiah and suspend the nine others.

It happened 48 hours after the swearing in Okorocha and 48 hours before the end of the current Assembly.

The Assembly officially winds up on Thursday and a new one is expected to be inaugurated on June 6.

Those suspended are Okeke, Majority Leader Chukwuemeka Egbuchulam, Stan Dara, Oyibo Nwaneri, Declan Emelumba, Bede Eke, Josephat Emenaha, Ray Emana, and Louise Chukwu.

After his swearing in, Nwoha directed the suspended lawmakers to hand over all the property of the Assembly in their possession to the Clerk.

He also asked the Director of Accounts to stop financial transactions with them, and to forward the statement of account of the Assembly to the new leadership.

An Assembly member, Ikenna Emeh, expressed sadness over the non payment of civil servants by Ohakim and appealed to Okorocha to remedy the situation.

Nwoha told journalists after plenary that Opiah was impeached because he ran the Assembly like a personal estate for four years.

He accused Opiah of diverting public funds into his private accounts.

Nwoha pledged to support Okorocha by abrogating “some of the obnoxious laws” enacted against the people.

He said the Assembly will pass a motion urging Okorocha to probe Ohakim, and that lawmakers themselves will investigate Opiah and his leadership.
