Posers on Ironsi and abolition of federalism.

Those who contend that Ironsi's Decrees 34 didn't abolish the true federalism and resource control we started with at independence should in very simple language explain what exactly Ironsi meant with the bolded expressions in his May 24 1966 National Broadcast reproduced in part below:

Ironsi's Broadcast to the Nation banning
Political Parties and introducing Decree No. 34, 24 May 1966.
www.dawodu.com

Fellow Nigerians:
During the past two weeks I presided over meetings of the Supreme
Military council and the Central Executive Council at which many
important state matters were considered. . .
It is now three months since the Government of the Federal Republic
of Nigeria was handed over to the Armed Forces. Now that peace has
been restored in the troubled areas it is time that the Military
Government indicates clearly what it proposes to accomplish before
relinquishing power. The removal of one of the obstacles on the way
is provided for in the Constitution (Suspension and Modification)
Decree (No. 5) 1966 which was promulgated by me today and comes into
effect at once.
The provisions of the Decree are intended to remove the last
vestiges of the intense regionalism of the recent past,
and to
produce that cohesion in the governmental structure which is so
necessary in achieving, and maintaining the paramount objective of
the National Military government, and indeed of every true Nigerian,
namely, national unity.
The highlights of this Decree are as follows:
The former regions are abolished, and Nigeria grouped into a number
of territorial areas called provinces. . . .
Nigeria ceases to be what has been described as a federation. It
now becomes simply the Republic of Nigeria.
The former Federal Military government and the Central Executive
Council become respectively the National Military Government and the
executive Council.

All the Military Governors are members of the
Executive Council.
A Military Governor is assigned to a group of provinces over which
and subject to the direction and control of the Head of the National
Military Government,
he shall exercise executive power. In order to
avoid any major dislocation of the present administrative machinery,
the grouping of the provinces has been made to coincide with the
former regional boundaries. This is entirely a transitional measure
and must be understood as such. [The present grouping of the
provinces is without prejudice to the Constitutional and
Administrative arrangements to be embodied in the New Constitution
in
accordance with the wishes of the people of Nigeria.
The National Military Government assumes the exercise of all
legislative powers throughout the Republic
subject to such
delegations to Military Governors as are considered necessary for
purposes of efficient administration.
The public services of the former federation and regions become
unified into one national public service under a National Public
Service Commission
. There is a provincial Service Commission for
each group of provinces to which is delegated functions in respect of
public officers below a given rank. This rather drastic change will
probably involve a reconstitution of the existing commissions, and
the National Military Government reserves the right to do so in the
manner stipulated in the Decree. Until this is done, the present
Commissioners continue to act in their posts. Every civil servant is
now called upon to see his function in any part of Nigeria in which
he is serving in the context of the whole country
. The orientation
should now be towards national unity and progress. I expect all
civil servants to co-operate and to consult at all levels, vertically
and horizontally, between groups of Provinces and between Provinces
and the Centre.

cool

Before Gen Ironsi’s unification decree in 1966 ,Awolowo’s Western Region had it’s own busy UK Embassy on Great Portland St in London

It had to be closed down because of the unification decree and the Federal Government later took over the building

Was the decree in the interest of the Igbo as many people tend to believe? The newly discovered oil at the time was found in the Eastern region. If the idea was for Igbo to annex oil wealth, are we not talking of oil already in their kitty? If you take a view of the issue from the other angle, won't you see that the 1963 Constitution which places resources in the hand of the regional governments was prevailing. This means that some people may have been afraid the new found oil would place an enormous premium value for Easteners. What would have been the possible means to remove this economic interest from the eastern region and ensure that other interests benefits? Was it not by two possible means - 1. look for a possible grey areas, cause divisions and possibly sponsor dissident groups to break away. 2. Collapse the existing federal structure into a unitary government. Inspite of the fact that Ironsi was an Easterner, was his Decree at the time intended to favour the East? More studies should be done to reveal who Ironsi truly represents a and also to unveil the region and the real people behind the promulgation of decree No. 34, 24 May 1966.

This is the height of mental laziness! Some of you are pathetic beyond belief. Ironsi was in power for just 6 months! 6 months!!! Because of the tribal politics of The Sarduana and Awolowo and Akintola, he suggested centralized system of administration. The north was against that. So Ironsi decided to travel around the country to explain his position to the different regions! He was killed while still doing this. As at the time he was killed, the regions were still functioning in full force, headed ofcourse by indigenes from these areas. Revenue generation and utilization were still following the principles of regionalism... Every practice associated with regionalism was still effective! He was killed for his suggestion by those who ostensibly opposed his ideas.

How come that almost a century after his murder, the same people that killed him and took over the reigns of governance, are still blaming him for all the evil maladministrative hiccups that they have bequeathed to Nigeria? I mean how can you blame a man you killed 60 years ago for your present failures, when you killed him to stop him? Why can't you Yorubas and fulanis accept that with over a trillion dollars oil income, you guys have failed abysmally at the simple task of running a modern society? Why pass the buck? This country is the way it's today not because Ironsi suggested a unitary system that he never lived to practice, but because from the day he was killed, two tribal groups with their retrogressive cultures hyjacked officialdom but failed woefully at running a modern state. Simple.

Revisionism of the highest order

The main reason for ironsi death was in revenge for the perceived ibo coup of January 15th....a coup that saw the killings of only leaders of other tribes....no single ibo leader was killed which led to enmity between ibos and other tribes (ibos would act the same way if they were in the shoes of other tribes.

Ironsi was killed also because of the perceived soft spot he has for the ibo coup plotters as he refused to the needful by killing the coup plotters which further enraged the other tribes.

If ibo leaders were so gruesomely murdered and hausa fulani leaders were left untouched....wont ibos seek revenge like the northern millitary officers?

What is unanswered there? Ironsi who I believe masterminded the first coup all along using Nzeogwu and some of his other boys made the decree that took powers away from regions to the centre. Why were the attacks only in Kaduna, Ibadan, Lagos and none in the Eastern region if not well-planned ethnic cleansing.

Why didn't he execute the coup plotters but instead left them to continue living large like heroes while himself (Ironsi) and Ojukwu went after Adaka Boro's life, killed Niger Delta soldiers for declaring their own republic.. same thing Ojukwu later did and was expecting a pat on the head from Nigeria.

Igbos have destroyed so many things in this country right from the first republic and are still doing so till date.

Northerners played their role, albeit too politically

The problem with the person that started this thread is that they are more interested in what Ironsi said than what Ironsi did

Forget what was said, concentrate on what was done

Did Ironsi abolish the Regions or Regionalism? No he did not, the same 4 Regions that were existing when he came to power was still there when he left power
